Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Mahbub from Ahmad from al-Husayn from al-Hasan from Zur’ah from Sama’ah, said: I asked Imam (a.s) about the traveller, at what distance does he shorten the prayer? Imam (a.s) said: “At the distance of a day’s journey, and that is two ‘barid’, which is eight ‘farsakh’. And whoever travels, shortens the prayer and breaks the fast, unless he is a man seeing someone off (mushayyi’), or he goes out for hunting, or to a village of his where the journey is a day’s travel and he spends the night with his family. In that case, he does not shorten (the prayer) and does not break the fast.”
