Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. Yaqtin from his brother al-Husayn from his father `Ali b. Yaqtin. He said: The news came to Musa b. Ja`far while he was with a group of his family that a plot by Musa b. al-Mahdi (the brother of Harun al-Rashid) was made against him. So, he said to his family: What do you think? They said: We believe that you should avoid this man and that you should hide yourself from him, for one cannot be safe from his evil. So, Abu’l Hasan smiled and recited [a poem of Ka`b b. Malik]: Sakhina (Quraysh) thought that she could defeat her master, but the victors can be defeated. Then, he raised his hand to the sky and said: My God! How many enemies sharpen their daggers for me, and pour deadly poison for me, with no eye sleeping away from me, watching? When You saw my weakness in withstanding calamity and my inability to act in poverty, You diverted all that from me by Your ability and Your power, not by my ability nor my power. You threw them in the ditch that they had dug out for me, as they are let down from what they hoped for in this world and are divergent from what they hoped for in the Hereafter. So, praise be to You – as much as You have the right to it – for this [blessing]. My Master, O Allah! Seize him, by Your glory, and make his dagger against me dull, by Your power. Make him busy running his own affairs and incapacitate him against his enemies. O Allah! Assist me against him now, so that it may be a remedy for my rage, and so that it may be a fulfillment of my right against him. O Allah! Connect my prayer with its acceptance and rearrange my complaints to [You] with change. Acquaint him with some of what You have promised the oppressors and acquaint me with the answer that You have promised the desperate. Surely, You are of great nobility and of benevolent blessing. He said: Then, he split away from the people. They were not reunited until the obituary of Musa b. al-Mahdi was read out [soon after that].

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us. He said: I heard a man from our companions say: When Harun al-Rashid imprisoned Musa b. Ja`far , night befell him. He feared that Harun may kill him. So, Musa renewed this purification, faced the qibla, prayed four voluntary units for Allah, then supplicated with this supplication: O my Master! Save me from the prison of Harun, and deliver me from his hands, O deliverer of the tree from the sand, clay, and water; O deliverer of milk from excretion and blood; O deliverer of the child from the placenta and the womb; O deliverer of fire from iron and stone; O deliverer of spirit from the intestines, deliver me from the hands of Harun. He said: When Musa supplicated with this supplication, Harun saw a black man in his dream. In his hand was a sword as he stood over the head of Harun, as he was saying: “O Harun! Let Musa b. Ja`far go. If you don’t, then I will strike your neck with this sword.” So, Harun feared his awesome aura, and he called for his gatekeeper. When the gatekeeper came, he said to him: Go to the prison and free Musa b. Ja`far. So, the gatekeeper went to the gate of the prison and knocked on it. The warden answered him and said: Who is this? He said: Surely, the caliph is calling for Musa b. Ja`far, so free him from your prison. So, the warden yelled: O Musa! The caliph calls for you. So, Musa stood suddenly, surprised and saying: He does not call for me tonight except to do an evil thing to me. So, he stood weeping, grieving, worried, and sorrowful about his life. He was taken to Harun shaking, so he said: Peace be to Harun (salam `ala harun). So, he responded, then Harun said to him: I adjure you by Allah, did you make any supplication in the middle of this night? So, he said: Yes. He said: What was it? He said: I renewed my purification, and I prayed four voluntary prayers for Allah, and I raised my sight to the sky, and I said: “O my Master! Deliver me from the hands of Harun and his evil”, and he mentioned what was left of his supplication. So, Harun said: Allah has answered your supplication. O gatekeeper, free him. Then, he called for a robe, and he put three robes onto him, and mounted him on his horse, and honoured him, and regretfully sent him off. Then, he said: Give me the words [to the supplication] so that I may memorize it. Then, he called for a tablet and wrote the words. He said: So, he sent him away, and he surrendered him to his gatekeeper so that he could send him to the house. So, Musa b. Ja`far became honoured by Harun, and he would visit him every Thursday.

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. al-Hasan b. Aban narrated to us from al-Husayn b. Sa`id from Ibn Abi `Umayr and Muhammad b. Isma`il from Mansur b. Yunus from Mansur b. Hazim. And `Ali b. Isma`il al-Muthanna from Mansur b. Hazim from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: There is no breastfeeding after weaning. There is no [validity in] continuous fasting. One who hits puberty cannot become an orphan. One cannot be silent from the day until the night. There is no nomadism after the hijra. There is no exodus after the conquest [of Mecca]. There is no divorce before marriage. There is no emancipation before ownership [of a slave]. There is no [validity in the] oath of sons regarding their fathers, slaves regarding their masters, nor wives regarding their husbands. There is no vow (nidhr) to do a sin. There is no [validity in the] oath in cutting [family] ties.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Aban b. `Uthman from Aban b. Taghlub from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir from his father from his grandfather . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever wants a way (tawassul) to me and wants my hand in his intercession on the Day of Resurrection should connect with my Ahl al-Bayt and bring joy to them.

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to me from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from `Abdullah b. al-Hasan b. al-Hasan b. `Ali from his father from his grandfather. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever blesses Muhammad and his family, Allah says: “Allah blesses you”; so, he should increase in [saying] that. Whoever says: “may Allah bless Muhammad” and does not bless his family will not find the fragrance of Paradise; and its fragrance could be found at the travel distance of five hundred years away.

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah. He said: My father narrated to me from `Ali b. al-Nu`man from Fadl b. Yunus from `Abdullah b. Sinan. He said: Abu `Abdillah al-Sadiq said: Whoever says: “O Allah! Forgive the believing men and women, and the Muslim men and women (Allahummaghfir lil mu’minin wal mu’minat wal muslimin wal muslimat)” twenty-five times in a day, Allah will record [a reward] for every believer that has passed and every believer that will remain until the Day of Resurrection, and He will erase a sin from him, and elevate him by a degree.

And by this isnad. From Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from `Umar b. Yazid. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq say: Whoever prays for forty of his brethren before he prays for himself, it will be granted for them and for him.

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us from Muhammad b. Ahmad b. Yahya b. `Imran al-Ash`ari from Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd from Sulayman b. Rashid from his father from Mu`awiya b. `Ammar. He said: I mentioned one of the prophets in the presence of Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq , and I blessed him, so he said: When one of the prophets is mentioned, then begin with blessing Muhammad, then him. (May the blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad and his Family, and upon all the prophets)

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Ali al-Sayrafi from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq from his father from his grandfather . He said: Umm Salama the wife of the Prophet (s) was informed that a servant of hers had lowered the status of `Ali and taunted him. So, she sent for him. When he came to her, she said to him: O my son! I was informed that you lower the status of `Ali and taunt him. He said to her: Yes, mother. She said: Sit – may your mother be bereaved with you – so that I could narrate a hadith to you that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (s). Then, decide for yourself. We were nine women with the Messenger of Allah (s), and it was my night and my day with the Messenger of Allah (s). So, the Prophet (s) entered, and his fingers were intertwined with the fingers of `Ali – he was placing his hand on him. So, he said: O Umm Salama! Exit the house and leave it for us. So, I left, and they began whispering [to one another]. I heard the discussion, but I could not make out what they were saying. When it became midday, I went to the door, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? He said: No. I was saddened, fearing that he had turned me away out of anger, or that something had been revealed from heaven. I did not remain except that I came to the door a second time, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? So, he said: No. So, I became even more saddened than the first time. Then, I did not remain except that I came to the door a third time, and I said: Shall I enter, O Messenger of Allah? So, he said: Enter, Umm Salama. So, I entered, and `Ali was kneeling in front of him, saying: May my mother and my father be your sacrifice, O Messenger of Allah! If such-and-such were to happen, then what do you command me to do? He said: I command you to be patient. Then, he repeated the saying a second time, and he commanded him to be patient. Then, he repeated the saying a third time, so he said to him: O `Ali, O my brother! If they do that, then unsheathe your sword, place it on your shoulders, and strike before you again and again until you meet me and your sword is dripping in their blood. Then, he turned to me and said to me: Why are you sad, Umm Salama? I said: Because you were turning me away, O Messenger of Allah. So, he said to me: By Allah, I did not turn you away out of anger. Surely, you are upon goodness from Allah and His Messenger. Rather, you came to me while Gabriel was on my right and `Ali was on my left. Gabriel was informing me of what will occur after me, and he commanded me to impart that to `Ali. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my brother in this world and my brother in the Hereafter. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my vizier in this world and my vizier in the Hereafter. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is the one that holds my banner in this world and the one who will hold my banner anon in the Resurrection. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is my deputy and my vicegerent (khalifa) after me. He is my judge of my articles and the defender of my Pond. O Umm Salama! Listen and bear witness. This `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Master of the Muslims, the Imam of the Godfearing, the Leader of the shining believers, and the killer of the oath breakers, the deviators, and the apostates. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are the oath breakers? He said: Those who pledge allegiance to him in Medina and betray him in Basra. I said: Who are the deviators? He said: Mu`awiya and his companions from the people of the Levant. I said: Who are the apostates? He said: The people of Nahrawan. So, the servant of Umm Salama said: You have relieved me, may Allah relieve you. By Allah, I will never insult `Ali.

Muhammad b. Masrur b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from his father from Muhammad b. Sinan from Abi'l Jarud Ziyad b. al-Mundhir from al-Qasim b. al-Walid from a shaykh from Thumala. He said: I visited an old lady from Tamim, who was narrating to the people. So, I said to her: May Allah have mercy on you. Narrate some of the virtues of Amir al-Mu'minin `Ali to me. She said: You want me to narrate to you while this elder is sleeping right in front of you? So, I said to her: Who is this? So, she said: Abu Hamra', the servant of the Messenger of Allah (s). So, she sat by him, and when he sensed me, he awoke and sat up. So, he said: What? So, she said: May Allah have mercy on you. Narrate to me about what you have seen the Messenger of Allah (s) do with `Ali , for Allah will ask you about it. So, he said: You have come across an informed one. As for what I've seen the Messenger of Allah (s) do with `Ali , he said to me one day: O Aba'l Hamra’! Go and get me one hundred Arabs, fifty non-Arab men, thirty Coptic men, and twenty Abyssinian men. So, I brought them, so the Messenger of Allah (s) put the Arabs in a row, then put the non-Arabs in a row behind the Arabs, then put the Copts in a row behind the non-Arabs, then put the Abyssinians in a row behind the Copts. Then, he stood, praised and commended Allah, and glorified Allah in a way that had never been heard from the creatures. Then, he said: O Arabs, non-Arabs, Copts, and Abyssinians! Have you declared that there is no god but Allah, one without partners, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger? So, they said: Yes. So, he said: O Allah, bear witness. He repeated this three times, and the third time he said: Have you declared that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, and that `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Commander of the Faithful and the Master of their Affair after me? So, they said: O Allah, yes. So, he said: O Allah, bear witness. He said this three times. Then, he said to `Ali : O Aba'l Hasan! Go and bring me a pen and paper. So, he gave them to `Ali b. Abi Talib and said: Write. So, he said: What should I write? He said: Write: “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This is what the Arabs, the non-Arabs, the Copts, and the Abyssinians have declared. They have declared that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Servant and His Messenger, and that `Ali b. Abi Talib is the Commander of the Faithful and the Master of their Affair after me.” Then, he put his seal on the paper, and he gave it to `Ali . I did not see it afterwards. So, I said: May Allah have mercy on you. Increase for me. So, he said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (s) came out to us on the Day of `Arafa, while he was holding the hand of `Ali , so he said: O creatures! Allah is boasting that He will forgive you all today. Then, he looked to `Ali and said to him: And he has forgiven you, `Ali, especially. Then, he (s) said: O `Ali! Come closer to me. So, he came closer to him. Then, he said: He who is most rightfully happy is the one who loves you and obeys you. He who is most rightfully wretched is the one who opposes you and hates you. O `Ali! Whoever wars against you wars against me, and whoever wars against me wars against Allah. O `Ali! Whoever hates you has hated me, and whoever hates me has hated Allah. Allah makes his grandfather miserable (?) and makes him enter the Fire of Hell.
