Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father from al-Saqr b. Dulf. He said: I asked Abu’l Hasan `Ali b. Muhammad b. `Ali b. Musa al-Rida about monotheism, and I said that I take the doctrine of Hisham b. al-Hakam. So, he became angry and said: What is with you and the doctrine of Hisham? Whoever alleges that Allah is a body is not of us, and we dissociate from him in this world and the Hereafter. O Ibn Dulf! Surely, a body is generated, and Allah is its generator and its maker.

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from al-`Abbas b. Ma`ruf from `Ali b. Mahzayar. He said: I wrote to Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. Musa al-Rida : May I be your sacrifice! I pray behind one who claims the doctrine of the body and takes the doctrine of Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman. So, he wrote: Do not pray behind them, and do not give them zakat. I dissociate from them, and Allah dissociates from them.

Ahmad b. `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from `Ali b. Mu`abbad from Wasil from `Abdullah b. Sinan from his father. He said: I was with Aba Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir when a man visited him from the Khawarij. So, he said: O Aba Ja`far! What do you worship? He said: Allah. He said: Did you see Him? He said: The vision of eyes cannot comprehend Him. Rather, it is the hearts that will see Him through the realities of faith. He is not known by analogies, nor is He comprehended by the senses, nor can He be compared to the people. He is described by His signs and He is known by His indicators. He does not oppress in His wisdom – surely, this is Allah, there is no deity except Him. So the man left while saying, “Allah is most knowing of where He places His message” (6:124).

`Ali b. Ahmad b. Musa narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Kufi narrated to us from Muhammad b. Isma`il al-Barmaki. He said: Al-Fadl b. Sulayman al-Kufi narrated to us from al-Husayn b. Khalid. He said: I heard al-Rida `Ali b. Musa say: Allah never ceased to be Knowing, Powerful, Living, Everlasting, Hearing, and Seeing. So, I said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! There are a people who say: “He never ceased to be Knowing with knowledge, Powerful with power, Living with life, Everlasting with lastingness, Hearing with the ability to hear, and Seeing with sight.” So, he said: Whoever says that and that which is close to that has taken other gods besides Allah; they are not upon our wilaya at all. Then, he said: Allah never ceased to be Knowing, Powerful, Living, Everlasting, Hearing, and Seeing by His Essence. He is far above what the pagans and those who liken Him to His creation say.

Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. `Ali al-Sikri narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Zakariyya al-Jawhari narrated to us from Ja`far b. Muhammad b. `Ammara from his father. He said: I asked al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad , saying to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! Inform me regarding Allah: does He become pleased and discontented? So, he said: Yes, but not in the way that is present among the creatures. Rather, the anger of Allah is His punishment, and His pleasure is His reward.

Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Asadi al-Kufi narrated to us from Musa b. `Imran al-Nakha`I from his uncle al-Husayn b. Yazid al-Nawfali from `Ali b. Salim from Abi Basir from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq . He said: Allah is not described with a time, nor with a place, nor with motion, nor with transition, nor with stillness. Rather, He is the Creator of time, place, motion, stillness, and transition. He is far above what the oppressors say.

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Sabah b. `Abd al-Hamid, Hisham, Hafs, and another person. They said: Abu `Abdillah said: We believe neither in fatalism nor in delegation.

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: My uncle Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Ali al-Qurashi narrated to us from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Surely, Allah revealed to this world: “Tire those who serve you and serve those who reject you.” If a servant were to seek his Master alone in the darkness of the night and whisper to Him, Allah would secure the light in his heart. If he were to say: “O Lord! O Lord!”, the Majestic will call to him: “I am at your service, My servant. Ask Me and I will grant you. Rely on Me and I will suffice for you.” Then, He will say to His angels: “O My angels! Look at My servant. He has sought Me alone in the darkness of the night; and the vain ones are not here, and the heedless are asleep. Bear witness that I have forgiven him.” Then, he said: Betake to piety, striving, and worship. Be ascetic in this world that is ascetic toward you, for surely, it is deception. It is the abode of annihilation and evanescence. How many have been deceived by it yet were destroyed by it? How many have trusted it yet were betrayed by it? How many have relied on it yet were fooled and defeated by it? Know that before you is a dreadful path and a long journey. You will pass through the Path, and you will need supplies. Whoever journeys without preparing supplies will perish. The best supply is God-consciousness. Then, remember that you will stand before Allah, for surely, He is the Judgment and the Justice. Prepare your answer to His question, for He will surely ask you about how you treated the two heavyweights after me: the Book of Allah and my progeny. Be careful not to say: “As for the Book, we have changed it and we have interpolated it; and as for the progeny, we have abandoned them and we have killed them.” At that, you will have no recompense except the Fire. Whoever of you would like to be delivered from the horror of that Day should align with my wali and follow my deputy and my vicegerent after me, `Ali b. Abi Talib; for surely, he is the master of my Pond. He will repel my enemies from it and he will feed my friends from it. Whoever is not fed from it will forever be thirsty and never be quenched, and whoever drinks from it will never suffer or thirst. Surely, `Ali b. Abi Talib is my standard bearer in the Hereafter, just as he was my standard bearer in this world. Surely, he will be the first to enter Paradise, because he will be before me with my standard in his hand. Beneath him will be Adam and those after him from the prophets.

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah b. Abi Khalaf narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to me from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Hammad b. `Uthman. He said: A man came to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad and said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! Inform me about noble character (makarim al-akhlaq). So, he said: Forgiving those who wrong you, connecting to those who cut you off, giving to those who withhold from you, and speaking the truth even if it against yourself.

Muhammad b. al-Hasan narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to me from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from `Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Najran and al-Husayn b. Sa`id from Hammad b. `Isa from Hariz b. `Abdullah al-Sijistani from Aban b. Taghlub from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . He said: Whoever among the believers dies between after midday on Thursday and midday on Friday, Allah will safeguard him from the pressure of the grave.

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from `Anbasa b. Bijad al-`Abid. A man came to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad and said: Advise me. So, he said: Prepare your belongings and ready your supplies for a long journey. Be an advisor to yourself, and do not depend on someone to give you that which will rectify you.

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah b. Abi Khalaf narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us. He said: Ja`far b. Bashir al-Bajali narrated to me. He said: Hammad b. Waqid narrated to me from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . He said: Whoever says “May Allah be glorified in His praise, may Allah the Great be glorified (subhanallah wa bi hamdihi, subhanallah al-`athim)” thirty times will receive riches, evade poverty, and knock on the gate of Paradise.

My father narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from `Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Najran from `Asim b. Humayd from Muhammad b. Qays from Abi Ja`far al-Baqir . He said: By Allah, `Ali would eat the food of a slave and sit as a slave sits. He would buy two Roman shirts and give the better one to his servant and wear the other. If the sleeve exceeded his fingers, he would cut it, and if its end would exceed his heel, he would shorten it. He ruled for five years, yet he did not put a brick atop a brick [on his own house], nor a tile atop a tile, nor acquire a piece of land, nor bequeath a silver or gold coin. He would feed the people bread and meat, then he would go to his house and eat barley, oil, and vinegar. He would not be given two options that Allah is pleased with except that he would take the one that was harder on his body. He freed one thousand slaves with the money he earned with sweat on his face and effort by his hands. None from the people could bear his deeds, even if he would pray one thousand units day and night. Even the person that resembled him the most – `Ali b. al-Husayn – could not bear his deeds, nor could anyone of the people after him.

A man from the tabi`in narrated from Anas b. Malik. He said: This verse was revealed regarding `Ali b. Abi Talib , “[Are they better] or those who worship devoutly in the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of their Lord?” (39:9) The man said: So, I went to `Ali to observe his worship. I swear by Allah, I went to him at Maghrib time, and I saw him leading his companions in Maghrib prayer. When he completed it, he sat in supplication until he stood to pray the final `Isha’. Then, he entered his house, so I entered it with him. I saw him pray and recite the Quran for the whole night until Fajr. Then, he renewed his ablution, went out to the mosque, and led the people in Fajr prayer. Then, he sat in supplication until sunrise. Then, the people went to him, and he spoke to two disagreeing men at a time – whenever he finished with one pair, another would go to him – until he stood to pray Thuhr. He said: Then, he renewed his ablution for Thuhr. Then, he led his companions in Thuhr prayer. Then, he sat in supplication until he stood to pray `Asr with them. Then, he met the people, and two men would stand, and two others would sit. He judged between them and gave edicts to them until sunset. Then, he went out while I was saying: I swear by Allah that this verse was revealed regarding him.

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. `Abdullah al-Barqi from his father Muhammad b. Khalid from Wahb b. Wahb from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever feeds a hungry believer, Allah will feed him from the fruits of Paradise. Whoever clothes him from his nakedness, Allah will clothe him in brocade and silk. Whoever gives him a drink when he is thirsty, Allah will give him sealed nectar. Whoever assists him or alleviates him of his distress, Allah will shade him in the shade of His Throne on the Day when there is no shade except its shade.

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from Isma`il b. Marrar from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from `Abdullah b. Sinan from Abi Hamza al-Thumali from al-Asbagh b. Nubata. He said: Whenever Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib was given money, he put it in the treasury of the Muslims (bayt al-mal al-muslimin). Then, he would gather those who were wronged, and he would take the money with his hand and distribute it left and right while saying: O gold, O silver! Do not deceive me – deceive someone else. I give this to others and forbid my hand from it. He would not leave until he distributed what was in the treasury of the Muslims and gave everyone their due right. Then, he would call for it to be swept and washed. Then, he would pray two units in it. Then, he would divorce this world three times; saying after the taslim: O world! Do not present yourself to me, do not make me long for you, and do not deceive me, for I have divorced you three times, and there is no coming back to you.

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from Ibrahim b. Hashim from `Ali b. Mu`abbad from al-Husayn b. Khalid from Abi’l Hasan al-Rida . He was asked: What is the intellect? So, he said: Suppressing grief, speaking gently to enemies, and showing support to friends.

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us from Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Ash`ari from Salama b. al-Khattab from al-Husayn b. Sa`id al-Azdi from Ishaq b. Ibrahim from `Abdullah b. Sabah from Abi Basir from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq . He said: On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather the former and latter peoples on one plane, and He will cover them in intense darkness. So, they will go to their Lord and say: “O Lord! Alleviate us of this darkness.” He said: So, a people will come with light before them, which will light up the world of the Resurrection. So, the gathered people will say: “Are these the prophets of Allah?” A call from Allah will come and say: “These are not My prophets.” So, the gathered people will say: “Are these angels?” So, a call from Allah will come and say: “These are not angels.” So, the gathered people will say: “Are these martyrs?” So, a call from Allah will come and say: “These are not martyrs.” So, they will say: “Who are they?” So, a call will come and say: “O gathered people! Ask them who they are.” So, the gathered people will say: “Who are you?” So, they will say: “We are the `Alids. We are the progeny of Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (s). We are the children of `Ali the Friend of Allah. We are the ones dignified by the blessing of Allah. We are the safe and pleased ones.” So, a call from Allah will come and say: “Intercede for your lovers and your Shi`a”, so they will be interceded, and they will intercede.

My father narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Salama b. al-Khattab narrated to us. He said: Abu’l Tahir Muhammad b. Tasnim al-Warraq narrated to us from `Abd al-Rahman b. Kathir from his father from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said to his companions one day: O my companions! Surely, Allah orders you to the wilaya of `Ali b. Abi Talib and to follow his example, for he is your master and your Imam after me. Do not dispute him, for you will have disbelieved; and do not split away from him, for you will have become misguided. Surely, Allah has made `Ali a sign [distinguishing] between faith and hypocrisy, for whoever loves him is a believer, and whoever hates him is a hypocrite. Surely, Allah has made `Ali my deputy, the light post of guidance after me, the place of my secret, the repository of my knowledge, and my vicegerent among my people. I complain to Allah about his oppressors from my Nation after me.
