My father narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Abd al-Jabbar from Abi Ahmad al-Azdi from Aban b. `Uthman from Aban b. Taghlub from `Ikrama from Ibn `Abbas. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Surely, Allah established a brotherhood between me and `Ali b. Abi Talib and married him to my daughter above the seven heavens – and His Angels of Proximity bore witness to that. He made him a deputy and a vicegerent for me. So, `Ali is from me and I am from him. Those who love him love me, and those who hate him hate me. Surely, the angels gain Allah’s proximity by loving him.

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Isa b. `Ubayd from Yunus b. `Abd al-Rahman from al-Hasan b. Ziyad from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . He said: Surely, Allah wanted Islam to be your religion, so beautify its company with generosity and beautiful character.

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdillah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Sinan from Talha b. Zayd from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: An abundance of jesting will recede the water in one’s face, and an abundance of laughing will erase one’s faith, and an abundance of lying will diminish one’s radiance.

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from `Ali b. Mu`abbad from al-Husayn b. Khalid from Abi’l Hasan `Ali b. Musa al-Rida from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: Whoever is a Muslim should not scheme or deceive others, for surely, I heard Gabriel say: “Scheming and deception are in the Fire.”

Then, he (s) said: Whoever cheats a Muslim is not of us. Whoever betrays a Muslim is not of us.

Then, he (s) said: Surely, Gabriel, the Trustworthy Spirit, came down to me from the Lord of the Worlds and said: “O Muhammad! Betake to good character, for surely, poor character diminishes the good of this world and the Hereafter.” Verily, those of you who resemble me the most are those with the most beautiful character.”

Al-Husayn b. Ibrahim b. Natana narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Hisham b. Salim. He said: Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad said: Whoever prays a prescribed prayer, then glorifies [Allah] thirty times after it, no sin will remain on his body except that he will have shed it.

Ja`far b. al-Husayn narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ja`far narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Hisham b. Salim from Abi `Ubayda al-Hadha’ from Abi `Abdillah . He said: Captives were brought to the Prophet (s), and he ordered that they be killed, except for one man among them. So, the man said: May my mother and my father be your sacrifice, Muhammad. Why did you exempt me from them? So, he said: Gabriel informed me from Allah that you have five characteristics that Allah and His Messenger love: (1) jealousy over your women, (2) generosity, (3) beautiful character, (4) a truthful tongue, and (5) courage. When the man heard this, he converted to Islam and beautified his Islam. He fought intensely alongside the Messenger of Allah (s) until he was martyred.

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: `Abd al-`Aziz b. Yahya al-Juludi narrated to us. He said: [Muhammad b. `Atiyya narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. `Amr b. Sa`id al-Basri narrated to us. He said:] Hisham b. Ja`far narrated to us from Hammad from `Abdullah b. Sulayman, who used to read the Scripture. He said: I read in the Gospel: O `Isa! Renew My Order and do not languish. Listen and obey, O son of the pure, chaste virgin. You are not a fool. I made you a sign for the worlds, so worship Me and rely on Me. Take the scripture with strength, go to the people of Syria and Assyria, and inform those before you that I am the eternal God who will never recede, and to believe in the Prophet of the Mother Town, the owner of the camel, the armour, the crown – which is the turban – the two sandals, and the rod – which is the staff. He will have wide eyes, a broad forehead, prominent cheeks, a thin and curved nose, and white teeth. His neck will be like a silver jar, his collarbones will be like gold. He will have hair from his chest to his navel, but not on his stomach or his [entire] chest. He will be tanned in colour, with light hair from his chest to his stomach. His hands and feet will be large. When he turns, he will turn with his whole body. When he walks, it is as though he is stepping from stone to stone (he does not drag his feet). When he walks with the people, he overcomes them [in speed]. The sweat on his face is like pearls, and his scent is like the fragrance of musk. No one like him was ever seen before him nor after him. His scent will be pleasant. He will marry women, but he will have few children, and his child (Fatima) will be blessed, and she will have a house in Paradise. He will support her in the end times just as Zakariyya supported your mother. She will give birth to two martyrs. His words will be the Quran, and his religion will be Islam, and I am Peace. So, Tuba is for he who lives in his time, sees his days, and listens to his words. So, `Isa said: O Lord! What is Tuba? He said: A tree in Paradise that I planted with My two hands in the shade of Paradise. Its root is in being pleased [with My will], its water is from tasnim, its breeze is from camphor, and its taste is like ginger. Whomever drinks from its river will never thirst again. So, `Isa said: O Allah! Allow me to drink from it. He said: "O `Isa! It is forbidden for the humans to drink from it until that Prophet drinks from it. It is forbidden for the nations to drink from it until the nation of that Prophet drinks from it. O `Isa! I will raise you to Me, then I will send you back down in the End Times so that you may see the marvelous nation of that Prophet, and to save them from the cursed Dajjal. I will send you down during the time of prayer so that you may pray with them. Surely, they are a Nation that has been given mercy.

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: Abu Bakr Ahmad b. Dubays b. `Abdullah al-Mufassir narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi’l Bahlul al-Maruzi narrated to us. He said: Al-Fadl b. Harmaz Diyar al-Tabari narrated to us. He said: Abu `Ali al-Hasan b. Shuja` al-Balkhi narrated to us. He said: Sulayman b. al-Rabi` narrated to us. He said: I heard Kudah b. Ahmad say: I heard Muqatil b. Sulayman say: I heard al-Dahhak say: A man asked Ibn `Abbas: What has Allah concealed regarding Paradise? He has informed us about its wives, its servants, its good things, its drinks, its fruits, and that which Allah mentioned regarding its matters and revealed in His Book. So, Ibn `Abbas said: It is the Paradise of Eden. Allah created it on Friday, then He sealed it. No creature in the heavens nor the Earth will see it until its people enter it. He said to it three times: “Speak.” Then, it said: “Tuba is for the believers.” He said: “Tuba is for the believers, and Tuba is for you.” Muqatil said: al-Dahhak said: Ibn al-`Abbas said: So, the Prophet (s) said: A believer is not but one who has six characteristics: (1) he speaks truthfully, (2) he fulfills his promises, (3) he fulfills his trusts, (4) he is good to his parents, (5) he connects with his blood-relatives, and (6) he repents from his sins.

Abu’l `Abbas Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Talaqani narrated to us. He said: Abu Bakr Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Anbari narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Abu Bakr Muhammad b. Abi Ya`qub al-Dinuri narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi’l Miqdam al-`Ijli narrated to us. He said: It is reported that a man came to `Ali b. Abi Talib and said: O Amir al-Mu’minin! I need something from you. So, he said: Write it in the ground, for I see a malady in you. So, he wrote in the ground: “I am a needy, poor person.” So, `Ali said: O Qanbar! Clothe him in two garments. So, the man recited: You have clothed me in a garment whose beauty will fade, So, I will clothe you in beautiful praise, Once you are gowned in my garment of beautiful praise, you are gowned in honour, I will not remain in that which you have gowned me in, But praise will enliven the memory of its owner, Just as rain enlivens the plains, but the mountain remains For the rest of time in the place where it began, Every worshiper will reap what he sows. So, `Ali said: Give him one hundred gold coins. So, it was said to him: O Amir al-Mu’minin! You have made him rich. So, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: Put people in their proper station. Then, `Ali said: I am astonished at a people who buy slaves with their wealth, but do not buy freemen with their good deeds!

Abu’l `Abbas Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: Abu Ahmad `Abdillah b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Sa`id b. Bashir narrated to us. He said: Ibn Kasib narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Maymun al-Makki narrated to us. He said: Ja`far b. Muhammad narrated to us from his father from `Ali b. al-Husayn . Two men from Quraysh visited him, so he said: Shall I narrate about the Messenger of Allah (s) for you two? So, they said: Of course – narrate to us about Abi’l Qasim. He said: I heard my father say: Three days before the Messenger of Allah (s) passed away, Gabriel came down to him and said: “O Ahmad! Surely, Allah sent me to you to ennoble and honour you specifically. He asks you about that which He knows more than you regarding. He says: ‘How do you find yourself, Muhammad?’” The Prophet (s) said: “O Gabriel! I find myself distressed. O Gabriel! I find myself in agony.” On the third day, Gabriel came down with the Angel of Death. With them was an angel named Isma`il in the air, alongside seventy thousand angels. Gabriel was before them, so he said: “O Ahmad! Surely, Allah sent me to you to ennoble and honour you specifically. He asks you about that which He knows more than you regarding. He says: ‘How do you find yourself, Muhammad?’” He said: “O Gabriel! I find myself distressed. O Gabriel! I find myself in agony.” So, the Angel of Death sought permission [to enter]. So, Gabriel said: “O Ahmad! This is the Angel of Death, and he seeks your permission. He has never sought anyone’s permission before you, nor will he seek anyone’s permission after you.” He said: “Grant him permission.” So, Gabriel granted him permission. He entered, came before him, and said: “O Ahmad! Allah has sent me to you, and He ordered me to obey you in what you command of me. He ordered me to take your soul, but if you would hate that, then I will leave it alone.” So, the Prophet (s) said: “Would you do that, Angel of Death?” He said: “Yes. I was ordered to do that – to obey you in what you command of me.” So, Gabriel said to him: “O Ahmad! Surely, Allah longs to meet you.” So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said: “O Angel of Death! Do what you have been ordered to do.” So, Gabriel said: “These are my last steps in this world. Surely, you were my only need in this world.” When the Messenger of Allah (s) passed away, the wake was held. A person came whose voice was heard but whose body was not seen. So, he said: “Peace be unto you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. ‘Every soul shall taste death. You shall receive your reward on the Day of Resurrection.’ (3:185) In Allah is the consolation for every calamity, and the succession for every end, and the abode of all that goes. So, put your trust in Allah, and put your hope in Him, for afflicted is he who forbids the rewards. Peace be unto you, and the mercy of Allah, and His blessings.” `Ali b. Abi Talib said: “Do you know who this is? This is al-Khidr .”

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: Abu’l `Abbas Ahmad b. Ishaq al-Madiri narrated to us in Basra in Rajab in the year 318 AH. He said: Abu Qilaba `Abd al-Malik b. Muhammad narrated to us. He said: Ghanim b. al-Hasan al-Sa`di narrated to us. He said: Muslim b. Khalid al-Makki narrated to us. He said: Ja`far b. Muhammad narrated to us from his father from Jabir b. `Abdullah al-Ansari from `Ali b. Abi Talib . He said: Fatima said to the Messenger of Allah (s): O father! Where can I find you on the Day of the Great Stand, the Day of Horrors, and the Day of Great Dismay? He said: O Fatima! At the Gate of Paradise. I will have the Banner of Praise, and I am the intercessor for my Nation to my Lord. She said: O father! What if I do not find you there? He said: Find me at the Pond, where I will feed water to my Nation. She said: O father! What if I do not find you there? He said: Find me on the Path, where I will be standing and saying: “My Lord! Safeguard my Nation.” She said: What if I do not find you there? He said: Find me at the Scale, where I will be saying: “My Lord! Safeguard my Nation.” She said: What if I do not find you there? He said: Find me at the mouth of Hell, where I will be preventing its evil and its flames from my Nation. So, Fatima was gladdened by that – may the blessings of Allah be upon her, and upon her father, her husband, and her children.

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq narrated to us. He said: Abu Ahmad `Abd al-`Aziz b. Yahya al-Basri narrated to us. He said: al-Mughira b. Muhammad narrated to us. He said: Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. `Abd al-Rahman al-Azdi narrated to me in the year 216 AH. He said: Qays b. al-Rabi` and Mansur b. Abi’l Aswad narrated to us from al-A`mash from al-Minhal b. `Amr from `Abbad b. `Abdullah. He said: `Ali said: No verse has been revealed from the Quran except that I know where it was revealed, regarding whom it was revealed, regarding what it was revealed, and whether it was revealed on a plain or on a mountain. It was said: What was revealed regarding you? So, he said: Had you not asked me, I would not have informed you. This verse was revealed regarding me: “Surely, you are but a warner, and for every people there is a guide” (13:7) – the Messenger of Allah is the warner, and I am the guide to what he has brought.
