عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ ذَبِيحَةِ الذِّمِّيِّ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلْهُ إِنْ سَمَّى وَ إِنْ لَمْ يُسَمِّ .
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Mufaddaf ibn Salih from Zayd af-Shahham who has said the following: “Once abu ‘ Abd Allah , was asked about the slaughtering of the taxpayers (who are non-Muslims). He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use it for food even if he has mentioned the name of Allah or not.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّا قَوْمٌ نَخْتَلِفُ إِلَى الْجَبَلِ وَ الطَّرِيقُ بَعِيدٌ بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَ الْجَبَلِ فَرَاسِخُ فَنَشْتَرِي الْقَطِيعَ وَ الِاثْنَيْنِ وَ الثَّلَاثَةَ وَ يَكُونُ فِي الْقَطِيعِ أَلْفٌ وَ خَمْسُمِائَةِ شَاةٍ وَ أَلْفٌ وَ سِتُّمِائَةِ شَاةٍ وَ أَلْفٌ وَ سَبْعُمِائَةِ شَاةٍ فَتَقَعُ الشَّاةُ وَ الِاثْنَتَانِ وَ الثَّلَاثَةُ فَنَسْأَلُ الرُّعَاةَ الَّذِينَ يَجِيئُونَ بِهَا عَنْ أَدْيَانِهِمْ فَيَقُولُونَ نَصَارَىقَالَ فَقُلْتُ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ قَوْلُكَ فِي ذَبِيحَةِ الْيَهُودِ وَ النَّصَارَى فَقَالَ يَا حُسَيْنُ الذَّبِيحَةُ بِالِاسْمِ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا أَهْلُ التَّوْحِيدِ .
2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Hanan ibn Sadir from al— Husayn ibn al— Mundhir who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah , that we often meet a people from the mountains, the distance between us is quite far to the mountains by many Farsakh (a certain unit of measurement for distance). We buy one, two or three flocks and every flock numbers one thousand five hundred, one thousand six hundred or one thousand seven hundred sheep. Then two or three sheep are cut (killed) and we ask the shepherd about their religion. They say that they are Christians. What do you say about the slaughtering by Jews and Christians? He (the Imam) said, ‘O al-Husayn, ‘Slaughtering is by name and no one can be trusted in this matter except people who believe in the Oneness of Allah.’”
وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ حَنَانٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ الْمُنْذِرِ رَوَى عَنْكَ أَنَّكَ قُلْتَ إِنَّ الذَّبِيحَةَ بِالِاسْمِ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا أَهْلُهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّهُمْ أَحْدَثُوا فِيهَا شَيْئاً لَا أَشْتَهِيهِقَالَ حَنَانٌ فَسَأَلْتُ نَصْرَانِيّاً فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ تَقُولُونَ إِذَا ذَبَحْتُمْ فَقَالَ نَقُولُ بِاسْمِ الْمَسِيحِ .
3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Hanan who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah , ‘Al-Husayn ibn al-Mundhir has narrated from you that you have said, “Slaughtering is by name and you cannot trust for it in (slaughtering) except the people of the name.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘They have invented in it something that I do not like.’ Hanan has said, ‘I asked a Christian about what they say when slaughtering.’ He said, ‘We say, “In the name of al-Masih.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ نَصَارَى الْعَرَبِ أَ تُؤْكَلُ ذَبِيحَتُهُمْ فَقَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَنْهَى عَنْ ذَبَائِحِهِمْ وَ صَيْدِهِمْ وَ مُنَاكَحَتِهِمْ .
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn abu Nasr from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far , if animal slaughtered by the Christian Arabs can be used for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn
, would prohibit using what they slaughtered for food, as well as their hunting and marriage with them.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَغْرَاءِ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَبِيحَةِ الْيَهُودِيِّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيِّ فَقَالَ لَا تَقْرَبُوهَا .
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu al-Mighra’ from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ibrahim , about the animals slaughtered by the Jews and Christians. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not go close to such slaughtered animals.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُخْتَارِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّا نَكُونُ بِالْجَبَلِ فَنَبْعَثُ الرُّعَاةَ فِي الْغَنَمِ فَرُبَّمَا عَطِبَتِ الشَّاةُ أَوْ أَصَابَهَا الشَّيْءُ فَيَذْبَحُونَهَا فَنَأْكُلُهَا فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) هِيَ الذَّبِيحَةُ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌ .
6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn al-Mukhtar from al-Husayn ibn ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah , ‘We go to the mountains and send the shepherds to look after the sheep. Perhaps a sheep becomes injured and they slaughter it; if we can use it for food. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is a matter of proper slaughtering, thus, no one can be trusted in it except a Muslim.’”
وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْمُخْتَارِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ اصْطَحَبَ الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ خُنَيْسٍ وَ ابْنُ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ فِي سَفَرٍ فَأَكَلَ أَحَدُهُمَا ذَبِيحَةَ الْيَهُودِ وَ النَّصَارَى وَ أَبَى الْآخَرُ عَنْ أَكْلِهَا فَاجْتَمَعَا عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَخْبَرَاهُ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمَا الَّذِي أَبَى قَالَ أَنَا قَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ .
7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Husayn ibn al-Mukhtar from al-Husayn ibn ‘ Abd Allah who has said the following: “At one time I travelled with al-Mu‘alla’ ibn Khunays and ibn abu Ya’fur. One of them used the flesh of the animal slaughtered by Jews and Christians and the other abstained. They both went to visit abu ‘Abd Allah , and informed him of their story. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Which one of you abstained?’ He (one of them) said, ‘I abstained.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘You have done the right thing.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الْأَحْمَسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ إِنَّ لَنَا جَاراً قَصَّاباً فَيَجِيءُ بِيَهُودِيٍّ فَيَذْبَحُ لَهُ حَتَّى يَشْتَرِيَ مِنْهُ الْيَهُودُ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْ ذَبِيحَتِهِ وَ لَا تَشْتَرِ مِنْهُ .
8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from al-Husayn al-Ahmasiy who has said the following: “Once a man said to ‘Abd Allah , ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, we have a neighbor who is a butcher and he brings Jews who slaughter for him so that Jews can buy from him.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use for food what he sells and do not buy from him.’”
ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الْأَحْمَسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ هُوَ الِاسْمُ فَلَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌ .
9. Ibn abu ‘Umayr has narrated from al-Husayn al-Ahmasiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah , has said, ‘It is a matter of the name (mentioning the name of Allah), thus, no one can be trusted in it except a Muslim.’”
أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ الْأَعْشَى قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ أَنَا عِنْدَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْغَنَمُ يُرْسَلُ فِيهَا الْيَهُودِيُّ وَ النَّصْرَانِيُّ فَتَعْرِضُ فِيهَا الْعَارِضَةُ فَيَذْبَحُ أَ نَأْكُلُ ذَبِيحَتَهُ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تُدْخِلْ ثَمَنَهَا مَالَكَ وَ لَا تَأْكُلْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الِاسْمُ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌفَقَالَ لَهُ الرَّجُلُ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى الْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّباتُ وَ طَعامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ أَبِي ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّمَا هُوَ الْحُبُوبُ وَ أَشْبَاهُهَا .
10. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from ibn Muskan from Qutaybah al-A‘sha’ who has said the following: “A man once asked abu ‘Abd Allah , when I was with him (the Imam) and said, ‘Sheep are sent to Jews and Christian for maintenance and something happens and it is slaughtered; if I can use it for food. Abu ‘Abd Allah
, has said, ‘Do not mix the price you receive for it with your other assets and do not use it for food. It is a matter of name (mentioning the name of Allah) and no one can be trusted in it except a Muslim.’ A man then said, ‘Allah, most High, says, ‘Today We have made the good things lawful for you and the food of the people of the book is lawful for you.’ (5:5) Abu ‘Abd Allah
, then said to him, ‘My father
, would say that it is about grains and similar things.’”
عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ وَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ قَالَ ابْنُ سِنَانٍ قَالَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَأْكُلْ مِنْ ذَبَائِحِ الْيَهُودِ وَ النَّصَارَى وَ لَا تَأْكُلْ فِي آنِيَتِهِمْ .
11. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir and ‘Abd Allah ibn Talhah. Ibn Sinan has said that ’Isma‘il ibn Jabir has said, the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah , has said, ‘Do not use for food what is slaughtered by Jews and Christians and do not eat in their utensils.’”
عَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ الْأَعْشَى قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ ذَبَائِحِ الْيَهُودِ وَ النَّصَارَى فَقَالَ الذَّبِيحَةُ اسْمٌ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَى الِاسْمِ إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌ .
12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Sinan from Qutaybah al-A‘sha’ who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah , about the animals slaughtered by Jews and Christians. He (the Imam) said, ‘Slaughtering is a matter of name (mentioning the name of Allah); no one can be trusted in it except a Muslim.’”
مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَأْكُلْ ذَبَائِحَهُمْ وَ لَا تَأْكُلْ فِي آنِيَتِهِمْ يَعْنِي أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ .
13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from ’Isma‘il from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah , has said, ‘Do not use for food the animals they slaughter, do not eat in their utensils, meaning thereby people of the book.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مَرَّارٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ ذَبَائِحِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ إِذَا ذَكَرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ لَكِنِّي أَعْنِي مِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَكُونُ عَلَى أَمْرِ مُوسَى وَ عِيسَى ( عليهما السلام ) .
14. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Isma’il ibn Marrar from Yunus from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘ Abd Allah , about the animals slaughtered by the people of the book. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if they mention the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, and I mean those of them who are on the command of Moses and Jesus.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَا وَ أَبِي فَقُلْنَا لَهُ جَعَلَنَا اللَّهُ فِدَاكَ إِنَّ لَنَا خُلَطَاءَ مِنَ النَّصَارَى وَ إِنَّا نَأْتِيهِمْ فَيَذْبَحُونَ لَنَا الدَّجَاجَ وَ الْفِرَاخَ وَ الْجِدَاءَ أَ فَنَأْكُلُهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلُوهَا وَ لَا تَقْرَبُوهَا فَإِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ عَلَى ذَبَائِحِهِمْ مَا لَا أُحِبُّ لَكُمْ أَكْلَهَاقَالَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْكُوفَةَ دَعَانَا بَعْضُهُمْ فَأَبَيْنَا أَنْ نَذْهَبَ فَقَالَ مَا بَالُكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَأْتُونَّا ثُمَّ تَرَكْتُمُوهُ الْيَوْمَ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّ عَالِماً لَنَا ( عليه السلام ) نَهَانَا وَ زَعَمَ أَنَّكُمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى ذَبَائِحِكُمْ شَيْئاً لَا يُحِبُّ لَنَا أَكْلَهَا فَقَالَ مَنْ هَذَا الْعَالِمُ هَذَا وَ اللَّهِ أَعْلَمُ النَّاسِ وَ أَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ صَدَقَ وَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَنَقُولُ بِسْمِ الْمَسِيحِ ( عليه السلام ) .
15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hanan ibn Sadir who has said the following: “Once my father and I visited abu ‘Abd Allah , and said, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in service for your cause, we have Christian associates and they slaughter for us chickens and goats; if we can eat thereof. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not eat and do not get close to it; what they say on it is something because of which I do not like if you to eat thereof.’ He (the narrator) has said, when we arrived in al-Kufah certain ones of them invited us and we declined their invitation. He asked about the reason saying, ‘You were coming to us and now you have refused.’ We replied, ‘Our scholar
, prohibited and he thinks that you say something on what you slaughter because of which he does not like that we eat thereof.’ He then asked, ‘Who is your scholar? He by Allah, is the most knowledgeable of all people and more knowledgeable than what Allah has created. He has spoken the truth by Allah. We say, ‘In the name of al-Masih
.’”
عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ ذَبِيحَةِ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ قَالَ فَقَالَ وَ اللَّهِ مَا يَأْكُلُونَ ذَبَائِحَكُمْ فَكَيْفَ تَسْتَحِلُّونَ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا ذَبَائِحَهُمْ إِنَّمَا هُوَ الِاسْمُ وَ لَا يُؤْمَنُ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌ .
16. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from certain persons of his people who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah , about the animals the people of the book slaughter. He (the Imam) said, ‘By Allah they do not eat what you slaughter; then how can you consider what they slaughter as lawful? It is a matter of name (mentioning the name of Allah), and no one can be trusted in it except a Muslim.’”
بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ قُتَيْبَةَ الْأَعْشَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلًا يَسْأَلُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لِي أَخاً فَيُسْلِفُ فِي الْغَنَمِ فِي الْجِبَالِ فَيُعْطِي السِّنَّ مَكَانَ السِّنِّ فَقَالَ أَ لَيْسَ بِطِيبَةِ نَفْسٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَلَا بَأْسَقَالَ فَإِنَّهُ يَكُونُ لَهُ فِيهَا الْوَكِيلُ فَيَكُونُ يَهُودِيّاً أَوْ نَصْرَانِيّاً فَتَقَعُ فِيهَا الْعَارِضَةُ فَيَبِيعُهَا مَذْبُوحَةً وَ يَأْتِيهِ بِثَمَنِهَا وَ رُبَّمَا مَلَّحَهَا فَيَأْتِيهِ بِهَا مَمْلُوحَةً قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنْ أَتَاهُ بِثَمَنِهَا فَلَا يُخَالِطْهُ بِمَالِهِ وَ لَا يُحَرِّكْهُ وَ إِنْ أَتَاهُ بِهَا مَمْلُوحَةً فَلَا يَأْكُلْهَا فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ الِاسْمُ وَ لَيْسَ يُؤْمَنُ عَلَى الِاسْمِ إِلَّا مُسْلِمٌفَقَالَ لَهُ بَعْضُ مَنْ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَأَيْنَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ طَعامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَ طَعامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أَبِي ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ الْحُبُوبُ وَ مَا أَشْبَهَهَا .
17. Certain persons of our people have narrated from Mansur ibn al-‘Abbas from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Qutaybah al-A’sha’ who has said the following: “I once saw a man with abu ‘Abd Allah , who asked, ‘I have a brother in the mountains who exchanges things for other things. He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is it because of mutual agreement?’ he replied, ‘Yes, that is true.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It then is not unlawful.’ He then said, ‘He may have an agent who is a Jew or Christians who comes across something that sells slaughtered and brings its price, or salt it then brings it salted.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘He must not eat it. It is a matter of name (mentioning the name of Allah) in which no one can be trusted except a Muslim.’ A certain person present said, ‘What about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, “. . . the food of the people of the book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘My father
, would say that it is grains and similar things.’”
