Things That Invalidate Salah (Prayer) Like Laughing, Invalidating Wudu’, Making a Gesture, Forgetting and So on
12 Aḥadīth

1ـ جَمَاعَةٌ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ زُرْعَةَ عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الضَّحِكِ هَلْ يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ أَمَّا التَّبَسُّمُ فَلاَ يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاَةَ وَأَمَّا الْقَهْقَهَةُ فَهِيَ تَقْطَعُ الصَّلاَةَ. وَرَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ.


1. A group has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from his brother al-Hassan, from Zur’ah, from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I once asked him (the Imam) (a.s), about laughing if it destroys Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘Smiling does not destroy Salah (prayer) but laughing loudly destroys it.’” It (the above Hadith) also is narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah.”

2ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصِيبُهُ الرُّعَافُ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَقَالَ إِنْ قَدَرَ عَلَى مَاءٍ عِنْدَهُ يَمِيناً أَوْ شِمَالاً أَوْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُوَ مُسْتَقْبِلُ الْقِبْلَةِ فَلْيَغْسِلْهُ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ لْيُصَلِّ مَا بَقِيَ مِنْ صَلاَتِهِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ عَلَى مَاءٍ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ بِوَجْهِهِ أَوْ يَتَكَلَّمَ فَقَدْ قَطَعَ صَلاَتَهُ.


2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about a man who experiences nostril bleeding in Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘If it is possible for him to reach on his right, left or forward when still facing al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah), he washes it clean, then completes the remaining of his Salah (prayer). If he cannot find water without turning away from al-Qiblah (al-Ka‘bah), his Salah (prayer) is discontinued.’”

3ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصِيبُهُ الْغَمْزُ فِي بَطْنِهِ وَهُوَ يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَصْبِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ أَوْ لاَ يُصَلِّي قَالَ فَقَالَ إِنِ احْتَمَلَ الصَّبْرَ وَلَمْ يَخَفْ إِعْجَالاً عَنِ الصَّلاَةِ فَلْيُصَلِّ وَلْيَصْبِرْ.


3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s), about a man who feels something in his abdomen and he is able to bear it. Can he perform Salah (prayer) in that condition or not? He (the Imam) said, ‘If he can remain patient without fear of hastening his Salah (prayer), he completes his Salah (prayer) and exercise patience.’”

4ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ يُونُسَ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَأَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَنَّهُمَا كَانَا يَقُولاَنِ لاَ يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاَةَ إِلاَّ أَرْبَعَةٌ الْخَلاَءُ وَالْبَوْلُ وَالرِّيحُ وَالصَّوْتُ.


4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn ’Isma‘il ibn Bazi‘ from Mansur ibn Yunus from abu Bakr al-Hadramiy who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, would say, ‘Only four things discontinue Salah (prayer): defecation, urination, gas and sound.’”

5ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِما الْسَّلام) فِي الرَّجُلِ يَمَسُّ أَنْفَهُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَيَرَى دَماً كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ أَ يَنْصَرِفُ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ يَابِساً فَلْيَرْمِ بِهِ وَلاَ بَأْسَ.


5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Yunus from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “About a man who during Salah (prayer) touches his nose and finds blood; one of the two Imam, abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘If it is dry he throws it away and it is not harmful.’”

6ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ الْقَهْقَهَةُ لاَ تَنْقُضُ الْوُضُوءَ وَتَنْقُضُ الصَّلاَةَ.


6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Laughing does not invalidate Wudu’ but it invalidates Salah (prayer).”’

7ـ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُرِيدُ الْحَاجَةَ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ فَقَالَ يُومِىُ بِرَأْسِهِ وَيُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ وَيُسَبِّحُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ إِذَا أَرَادَتِ الْحَاجَةَ وَهِيَ تُصَلِّي تُصَفِّقُ بِيَدِهَا.


7. It is a narration from him (narrator of previous Hadith) by Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), was asked about one who, while in Salah (prayer), needs something. He (the Imam) said, ‘He can make a gesture with his head and with his hand or say Tasbih (Allah is free of all defects), and a woman in such condition can clap her hand.’”

8ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الأصَمِّ عَنْ مِسْمَعٍ أَبِي سَيَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) سَمِعَ خَلْفَهُ فَرْقَعَةً فَرْقَعَ رَجُلٌ أَصَابِعَهُ فِي صَلاَتِهِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) أَمَا إِنَّهُ حَظُّهُ مِنْ صَلاَتِهِ.


8. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan al-Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman al-Asamm from Misma’ abu Sayyar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘The Holy prophet once heard behind him a click like one’s cracking his finger in his Salah (prayer). After ending his Salah (prayer) the Holy prophet, said, ‘That is his share from his Salah (prayer).”’

9ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَأْخُذُهُ الرُّعَافُ وَالْقَيْ‏ءُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ قَالَ يَنْفَتِلُ فَيَغْسِلُ أَنْفَهُ وَيَعُودُ فِي صَلاَتِهِ فَإِنْ تَكَلَّمَ فَلْيُعِدْ صَلاَتَهُ وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ وُضُوءٌ.


9. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir from Ali ibn Mahziyar from Fadalah from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s), about a man who experiences nose bleeding and vomiting while in Salah (prayer). What is he to do? He (the Imam) said, ‘He turns to wash his nose and comes back to his Salah (prayer). If he has spoken, he must perform his Salah (prayer) again, but he does not need Wudu’.’”

10ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ أَ يَقْطَعُ صَلاَتَهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ مِمَّا يَمُرُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ لاَ يَقْطَعُ صَلاَةَ الْمُسْلِمِ شَيْ‏ءٌ وَلَكِنِ ادْرَأْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتَ قَالَ وَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ رَعَفَ فَلَمْ يَرْقَ رُعَافُهُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ وَقْتُ الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ يَحْشُو أَنْفَهُ بِشَيْ‏ءٍ ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي وَلاَ يُطِيلُ إِنْ خَشِيَ أَنْ يَسْبِقَهُ الدَّمُ قَالَ وَقَالَ إِذَا الْتَفَتَّ فِي صَلاَةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ فَرَاغٍ فَأَعِدِ الصَّلاَةَ إِذَا كَانَ الالْتِفَاتُ فَاحِشاً وَإِنْ كُنْتَ قَدْ تَشَهَّدْتَ فَلاَ تُعِدْ.


10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about a man whose Salah (prayer) is discontinued because of something passing in front of him. He (the Imam) said, ‘Salah (prayer) of a Muslim does not become discontinued by anything; however, protect as much as you can.’ He (the narrator) has said, ‘I then asked him (the Imam) about a man who experiences nose bleeding which does not stop until the time of Salah (prayer). He (the Imam) said, ‘He fills his nose up with something, then performs Salah (prayer), but does not take a long time if he fears bleeding.’ He (the narrator) has said that he (the Imam) said, ‘If he experiences nose bleeding in obligatory Salah (prayer) without break he performs his Salah (prayer) again if he has turned away from al-Qiblah (al-Ka’bah) before completing. If he has said Tashahhud (testimonies of belief), then he is not required to perform again.’”

11ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنْ فَضَالَةَ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي حَفْصٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَنَّ عَلِيّاً (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) كَانَ يَقُولُ لاَ يَقْطَعُ الصَّلاَةَ الرُّعَافُ وَلاَ الْقَيْ‏ءُ وَلاَ الدَّمُ فَمَنْ وَجَدَ أَزّاً فَلْيَأْخُذْ بِيَدِ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَلْيُقَدِّمْهُ يَعْنِي إِذَا كَانَ إِمَاماً.


11. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ariy has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amir from Ali ibn Mahziyar from Fadalah from Aban from Salmah ibn abu Hafs who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Ali (a.s), would say, ‘Nose bleeding does not discontinue Salah (prayer) nor vomiting, or blood. If one feels a pinch he can hold another man’s hand of the people in the rows to come forward, if he is an Imam, to lead.’”

12ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَلْتَفِتُ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ لاَ وَلاَ يَنْقُضُ أَصَابِعَهُ.


12. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Safwan from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s), if a man in Salah (prayer) can turn around. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, and he must not crack his fingers also.’”
