Al-Amālī

1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسين بن أبي الخطاب، قال: حدثنا محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، قال: سمعت مولاي الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: كان فيما ناجى الله عز وجل به موسى بن عمران (عليه السلام) أن قال له: يا بن عمران، كذب من زعم أنه يحبني فإذا جنه الليل نام عني، أليس كل محب يحب خلوة حبيبه، ها أنا ذا - يا بن عمران - مطلع على أحبائي، إذا جنهم الليل حولت أبصارهم من قلوبهم، ومثلت عقوبتي بين أعينهم، يخاطبوني عن المشاهدة، ويكلموني عن الحضور. يا بن عمران، هب لي من قلبك الخشوع، ومن بدنك الخضوع، ومن عينيك الدموع في ظلم الليل، وادعني فإنك تجدني قريبا مجيبا (1).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Sinan narrated to us from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar. He said: I heard my Master al-Sadiq (as) say: Among that which Allah whispered to Musa b. `Imran (as) was that He said to him: “O son of `Imran! One who alleges that he loves Me yet sleeps away from Me when night befalls him has lied. Doesn’t every lover love to be alone with his beloved? I am here, O son of `Imran, looking at My lovers – when night befalls them, their sights are diverted by their hearts, and they become fixed upon My punishment. So, they address Me as [though] witnessing [Me] and they speak to Me as [though] present [with Me]. O son of `Imran! Grant Me humility in your heart, submission in your body, and tears in your eyes in the darkness of the night. Call to Me, for you will find Me near and responsive.”

2 - وبهذا الاسناد قال: كان الصادق (عليه السلام) يدعو بهذا الدعاء: إلهي كيف أدعوك وقد عصيتك، وكيف لا أدعوك وقد عرفت حبك في قلبي! وإن كنت عاصيا مددت إليك يدا بالذنوب مملوءة، وعينا بالرجاء ممدودة، مولاي أنت عظيم العظماء، وأنا أسير الاسراء، أنا أسير بذنبي مرتهن بجرمي، إلهي لئن طالبتني بذنبي لاطالبنك بكرمك، ولئن طالبتني بجريرتي لاطالبنك بعفوك، ولئن أمرت بي إلى النار لاخبرن أهلها أني كنت أقول: لا إله إلا الله، محمد رسول الله، اللهم إن الطاعة تسرك، والمعصية لا تضرك، فهب لي ما يسرك، واغفر لي ما لا يضرك، يا أرحم الراحمين (1).

By this isnad: Al-Sadiq (as) would supplicate with this supplication: My God! I call upon You even though I have disobeyed You. How could I not call upon You when You know my love for You in my heart?! If I have been disobedient, then I stretch a hand to You that is full of sin, and I look to You in hope. My Master! You are the Greatest of the great, and I am the prisoner of the prisoners. I am a prisoner to my sin and ransomed to my crime. My God! If You seek me by my sin, then I seek You by Your benevolence, and if You seek me by my crime, then I seek You by Your pardon. If you order me to the Fire, then I will tell its inhabitants that I would say: “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” O Allah! Obedience gladdens You, but disobedience does not harm You, so grant me what gladdens You and pardon me of what does not harm You, O Most Merciful of the merciful ones.

3 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن عثمان بن عيسى، عن خالد ابن نجيح الجواز، عن وهب بن عبد ربه، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: من قال يعلم الله لما لا يعلم الله، اهتز العرش إعظاما لله عز وجل (2).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from `Uthman b. `Isa from Khalid b. Najih al-Jawaz from Wahb b. `Abd Rabbih. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: Whoever says “Allah knows” regarding something that he does not know, the Throne shakes out of the greatness of Allah.

/ 4 - حدثنا محمد بن القاسم الاسترآبادي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن الحسيني، عن الحسن بن علي بن الناصر، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن علي، عن أبيه الرضا، عن موسى بن جعفر (عليهم السلام)، قال: سئل الصادق (عليه السلام) عن الزاهر في الدنيا. قال: الذي يترك حلالها مخافة حسابه، ويترك حرامها مخافة عذابه (3).

Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Astarabadi (rh) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Husayni narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. al-Nasir from his father from Muhammad b. `Ali from his father al-Rida from Musa b. Ja`far (as). He said: Al-Sadiq (as) was asked about the best of this world. He said: One who abandons its lawful things out of fear of being accounted for it and abandons its unlawful things out of fear of being punished for it.

5 - وبهذا الاسناد، قال: رأى الصادق (عليه السلام) رجلا قد اشتد جزعه على ولده، فقال: يا هذا، جزعت للمصيبة الصغرى، وغفلت عن المصيبة الكبرى، لو كنت لما صار إليه ولدك مستعدا لما اشتد عليه جزعك، فمصابك بتركك الاستعداد له أعظم من مصابك بولدك (4).

And by this isnad. Al-Sadiq (as) saw a man intensely mourning his son, so he said: O you! You have mourned over the minor calamity, but you have been heedless of the major calamity. Had you prepared yourself for what would happen to your son, your mourning would not have been as intense. Your calamity of abandoning preparedness for this is greater than your calamity over your son.

6 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن عثمان بن عيسى، عن عبد الله بن مسكان، عن محمد بن مسلم، عن أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، قال: ثلاثة هم أقرب الخلق إلى الله عز وجل يوم القيامة حتى يفرغ من الحساب: رجل لم تدعه قدرته في حال غضبه إلى أن يحيف على من تحت يديه، ورجل مشى بين اثنين فلم يمل مع أحدهما على الآخر بشعيرة، ورجل قال الحق فيما عليه وله (1).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from `Uthman b. `Isa from `Abdullah b. Muskan from Muhammad b. Muslim from Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as). He said: There are three among the creation that will be closest to Allah on the Day of Resurrection until He completes the Judgment: (1) A man who does not use his strength during his state of anger against those under his hands, (2) a man who walks between two people and does not lean toward the other [in preference], (3) a man who speaks the truth, whether it is against him or for him.

583 / 7 - حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد بن إدريس (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، قال: قلت لابي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام): بم يعرف الناجي؟ فقال: من كان فعله لقوله موافقا فهو ناج، ومن لم يكن فعله لقوله موافقا فإنما ذلك مستودع (2).

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar. He said: I said to Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as): Who will be saved? So, he said: He whose actions and words are congruent will be saved. He whose actions and words are not congruent will surely be put down.

8 - حدثنا أحمد بن زياد بن جعفر الهمداني (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن مرازم بن حكيم، عن الصادق جعفر ابن محمد (عليهما السلام)، أنه قال: عليكم بأتيان المساجد، فإنها بيوت الله في الارض، ومن أتاها متطهرا طهره الله من ذنوبه، وكتب من زواره، فأكثروا فيها من الصلاة والدعاء، وصلوا من المساجد في بقاع مختلفة، فإن كل بقعة تشهد للمصلي عليها يوم القيامة (3).

Ahmad b. Ziyad b. Ja`far al-Hamadani (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Murazim b. Hakim from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Betake to going to mosques, for they are the houses of Allah on Earth. Whoever goes to them in a state of purity, Allah purifies him of his sins and records him as one of its visitors. Increase your prayer and supplication in them. Pray in different spots in the mosques, for each spot will bear you witness that you prayed upon it on the Day of Resurrection.

9 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري، قال: حدثني محمد بن الحسين بن أبي الخطاب، قال: حدثنا الحسن ابن محبوب، قال: حدثنا معاوية بن وهب، قال: سمعت أبا عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام) يقول: اطلبوا العلم وتزينوا معه بالحلم والوقار، وتواضعوا لمن تعلمونه العلم، وتواضعوا لمن طلبتم منه العلم، ولا تكونوا علماء جبارين فيذهب باطلكم بحقكم (4).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to me. He said: Al-Hasan b. Mahbub narrated to us. He said: Mu`awiya b. Wahb narrated to us. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) say: Seek knowledge and adorn it with forbearance and piety. Humble yourself to the one you are teaching knowledge to and humble yourself to the one you sought for knowledge. Do not be tyrannical scholars lest your faults wash away your truth.

10 - حدثنا محمد بن علي ماجيلويه (رحمه الله)، عن عمه محمد بن أبي القاسم، عن أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه محمد بن خالد، عن محمد بن سنان، عن المفضل بن عمر، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، أنه قال: عليكم بمكارم الاخلاق فإن الله عز وجل يحبها، وإياكم ومذام الافعال فإن الله عز وجل يبغضها، وعليكم بتلاوة القرآن فإن درجات الجنة على عدد آيات القرآن، فإذا كان يوم القيامة يقال لقارئ القرآن: اقرأ وارق، فكلما قرأ آية رقي درجة، وعليكم بحسن الخلق فإنه يبلغ بصاحبه درجة الصائم القائم، وعليكم بحسن الجوار فإن الله أمر بذلك، وعليكم بالسواك فإنها مطهرة وسنة حسنة، وعليكم بفرائض الله فأدوها، وعليكم بمحارم الله فاجتنبوها (1).

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh (rh) narrated to us from his uncle Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi from his father Muhammad b. Khalid from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Betake to noble character (makarim al-akhlaq), for Allah loves it. Beware of evil actions, for Allah hates them. Betake to reciting the Quran, for the degrees of Paradise are proportionate to the verses of the Quran. On the Day of Resurrection, a reciter will be told: “Recite and climb”, and when he recites a verse, he will climb a degree. Betake to beautiful character, because that will take one to the rank of one who is fasting and standing [in prayer]. Betake to beautiful neighbourliness, for surely, Allah ordered that. Betake to the tooth stick, for it is a purifier and a beautiful tradition. Betake to what Allah has obligated and fulfill them. Beware of what Allah has prohibited and abstain from them.

11 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أحمد ابن محمد بن عيسى، عن الحسين بن سعيد، عن علي بن الحكم، عن داود بن النعمان، عن إسحاق بن عمار، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: إذا كان يوم القيامة وقف عبدان مؤمنان للحساب، كلاهما من أهل الجنة، فقير في الدنيا، وغني في الدنيا، فيقول الفقير: يا رب على ما أوقف؟ فو عزتك انك لتعلم أنك لم تولني ولاية فأعدل فيها أو أجور، ولم ترزقني مالا فأودي منه حقا أو أمنع، ولا كان رزقي يأتيني منها إلا كفاف على ما علمت وقدرت لي. فيقول الله جل جلاله: صدق عبدي، خلوا عنه يدخل الجنة. ويبقى الآخر حتى يسيل منه العرق ما لو شربه أربعون بعيرا لكفاها ثم يدخل الجنة، فيقول له الفقير: ما حبسك؟ فيقول: طول الحساب، ما زال الشئ يجيئني بعد الشئ يغفر لي، ثم أسأل عن شئ آخر حتى تغمدني الله عز وجل منه برحمته، وألحقني بالتأئبين، فمن أنت؟ فيقول: أنا الفقير الذي كنت معك آنفا. فيقول: لقد غيرك النعيم بعدي (2).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa narrated to us from al-Husayn b. Sa`id from `Ali b. al-Hakam from Dawud b. al-Nu`man from Ishaq b. `Ammar from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: On the Day of Resurrection, two believing servants will be brought for judgment. Both are from the people of Paradise, but one was poor in this world, and the other was rich in this world. So, the poor one will say: “O Lord! Why was I brought? By Your glory, You surely know that You did not give me authority with which I could have been just or unjust, nor did you grant me wealth with which I could have given rightly or withheld it. My sustenance was not but enough to subsist poorly.” So, Allah will say: “You have spoken the truth, My servant, let him go enter Paradise.” So, the other will remain [for long], and he will sweat so much [over that time] that if forty camels would drink from it, it would suffice them. Then, he will enter Paradise. So, the poor one will say to him: “What kept you?” So, he said: “The length of the judgment. One thing came up after another, which were forgiven of me. Then, I would be asked about another thing until Allah would encompass me in His mercy. He made me join the repentant. So, who are you?” So, he will say: “I am the poor one who was with you earlier.” So, he will say: “Bliss has changed you.”

12 - حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا الحسين ابن محمد بن عامر، عن عمه عبد الله بن عامر، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن سليمان ابن مهران، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه محمد بن علي، عن أبيه علي بن الحسين، عن أبيه الحسين بن علي، عن أبيه علي بن أبي طالب (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): يا علي، أنت أخي وأنا أخوك، يا علي أنت مني وأنا منك، يا علي أنت وصيي وخليفتي وحجة الله على أمتي بعدي، لقد سعد من تولاك، وشقي من عاداك (1).

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Sulayman b. Mehran from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. al-Husayn from his father al-Husayn b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. Abi Talib (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: O `Ali! You are my brother, and I am your brother. O `Ali! You are from me, and I am from you. O `Ali! You are my deputy, my vicegerent (khalifa), and the Proof of Allah over my Nation after me. Whoever aligns with you will be made happy, and whoever opposes you will be made wretched.

13 - حدثنا الحسين بن إبراهيم بن ناتانه (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن الريان بن الصلت، عن أبي الحسن علي بن موسى الرضا، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليه السلام)، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) شيعة علي هم الفائزون يوم القيامة (2).

Al-Husayn b. Ibrahim b. Natana (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from his father from al-Rayyan b. al-Salt from Abi’l Hasan `Ali b. Musa al-Rida from his father from his forefathers (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: The Shi`a of `Ali will be triumphant on the Day of Resurrection.

14 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن الحسن المؤدب، عن أحمد بن علي الاصبهاني، عن إبراهيم بن محمد الثقفي، قال: حدثنا أبو رجاء قتيبة ابن سعيد، عن حماد بن زيد، عن عبد الرحمن السراج، عن نافع، عن عبد الله بن عمر، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) لعلي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام): إذا كان يوم القيامة يؤتي بك - يا علي - على نجيب من نور، وعلى رأسك تاج، قد أضاء نوره، وكاد يخطف أبصار أهل الموقف، فيأتي النداء من عند الله جل جلاله: أين خليفة محمد رسول الله؟ فتقول: ها أنا ذا. قال: فينادي المنادي: يا علي، أدخل من أحبك الجنة، ومن عاداك النار، فأنت قسيم الجنة، وأنت قسيم النار (3).

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. al-Hasan al-Mu’addab narrated to us from Ahmad b. `Ali al-Isfahani from Ibrahim b. Muhammad al-Thaqafi. He said: Abu Raja’ Qurayba b. Sa`id narrated to us from Hammad b. Zayd from `Abd al-Rahman al-Sarraj from Nafi` from `Abdullah b. `Umar. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said to `Ali b. Abi Talib (as): On the Day of Resurrection, you will be given – O `Ali – a garment of light, and upon your head will be a crown with an illuminating light [so bright that] it will almost put out the vision of the people of the judgment. Then, a call will come from Allah: “Where is the vicegerent of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah?” So, you will say: “I am he.” He said: So, the caller will call: “O `Ali! Take your lovers to Paradise and those who opposed you to the Fire.” You are the divider of Paradise, and you are the divider of the Fire.
