1 - حدثنا الشيخ الجليل أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى ابن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن الحسن بن شمون، عن عبد الله بن سنان، عن الفضيل بن يسار، قال: انتهيت إلى زيد بن علي (عليه السلام) صبيحة يوم خرج بالكوفة فسمعته يقول: من يعينني منكم على قتال أنباط أهل الشام؟ فو الذي بعث محمدا بالحق بشيرا، لا يعينني منكم على قتالهم أحد إلا أخذت بيده يوم القيامة فأدخلته الجنة بإذن الله. قال: فلما قتل اكتريت راحلة، وتوجهت نحو المدينة، فدخلت على الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، فقلت في نفسي: لا أخبرته بقتل زيد بن علي فيجزع عليه، فلما دخلت عليه قال لي: يا فضيل، ما فعل عمي زيد؟ قال: فخنقتني العبرة، فقال لي: قتلوه؟ قلت: إي والله، قتلوه. قال: فصلبوه؟ قلت: إي والله صلبوه. قال: فأقبل يبكي ودموعه تنحدر على ديباجتي خده كأنها الجمان. ثم قال: يا فضيل، شهدت مع عمي قتال أهل الشام؟ قلت: نعم. قال: فكم قتلت منهم؟ قلت: ستة. قال: فلعلك شاك في دمائهم؟ قال: فقلت: لو كنت شاكا ما قتلتهم. قال: فسمعته وهو يقول: أشركني الله في تلك الدماء، مضى والله زيد عمي وأصحابه شهداء، مثلما مضى عليه علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) وأصحابه (1).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Shamun from `Abdullah b. Sinan from al-Fudayl b. Yasar. He said: I went to Zayd b. `Ali (as) on the morning that he set out to Kufa, and I heard him say: Who of you will help me fight the Nabateans of the people of the Levant? For, by the One who sent Muhammad in truth as a bringer of good tidings, there will be no one from you who will help me fight them except that I will take his hand on the Day of Resurrection and take him to Paradise by the permission of Allah. So, when he was killed, I fled to the direction of Medina. I went to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as), and I said to myself: I will not inform him about the killing of Zayd b. `Ali, for he will become distressed by it.  So, when I visited him, he said to me: O Fudayl! What did my uncle Zayd do? The matter choked me, so he said to me: Did they kill him? I said: Yes, by Allah, they killed him. He said: Did they crucify him? I said: Yes, by Allah, they crucified him. So, he began to weep, and his tears covered his cheeks. Then, he said: O Fudayl! Did you join my uncle in fighting the people of the Levant? I said: Yes. He said: How many of them did you kill? I said: Six. He said: Are you in doubt with regards to their blood? I said: Were I in doubt, I would not have killed them. So, I heard him say: May Allah make me a partner in this blood. By Allah, my uncle Zayd and his companions have passed away as martyrs, just like `Ali b. Abi Talib [a] and his companions.

3 - حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن المتوكل (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا علي بن الحسين السعد آبادي، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أحمد بن محمد بن أبي نصر البزنطي، عن حماد بن عثمان، عن عبد الله بن أبي يعفور، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: خطب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) الناس في حجة الوداع بمنى في مسجد الخيف، فحمد الله وأثنى عليه، ثم قال: نضر الله عبدا سمع مقالتي فوعاها، ثم بلغها من لم يسمعها، فرب حامل فقه غير فقيه، ورب حامل فقه إلى من هو أفقه منه ثلاث لا يغل (1) عليهن قلب امرء مسلم: اخلاص العمل لله والنصيحة لائمة المسلمين، واللزوم لجماعتهم، فإن دعوتهم محيطة من ورائهم المسلمون إخوة تتكافا دماؤهم، يسعى بذمتهم أدناهم، هم يد على من سواهم (2).

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr al-Bazanti from Hammad b. `Uthman from `Abdullah b. Abi Ya`fur from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) delivered a sermon to the people in his Farewell Pilgrimage in Mina in the Mosque of Khayf. So, he praised Allah and commended Him. Then, he said: May Allah grant joy to a servant who heard my sayings and understood them, then delivers them to those who did not hear them. There can be a carrier of knowledge who is not a person of understanding, and there could be a carrier of knowledge who brings it to one who is more knowledgeable than him. There are three things that the heart of a Muslim person does not feel trouble in: (1) sincerity in deeds for Allah, (2) wishing well for the Imams of the Muslims, and (3) sticking to their community (jama`a), for their supplications encompass those behind them. The Muslims are brethren: their blood is equivalent, and [even] the lowest of them strives to protect them. They are [one] hand against those who oppose them.

4 - حدثنا محمد بن علي ما جيلويه (رحمه الله)، عن عمه محمد بن أبي القاسم، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن يحيى الخزاز، عن غياث بن إبراهيم، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن آبائه (عليهم السلام)، قال: قال أمير المؤمنين (عليه السلام): لانسبن الاسلام نسبة لم ينسبه أحد قبلي ولا ينسبه أحد بعدي، الاسلام هو التسليم، والتسليم هو التصديق، والتصديق هو اليقين، واليقين هو والاداء هو العمل، إن المؤمن أخذ دينه عن ربه ولم يأخذه عن رأيه. أيها الناس، دينكم دينكم، تمسكوا به، لا يزيلكم أحد عنه، لان السيئة فيه خير من الحسنة في غيره، لان السيئة فيه تغفر، والحسنة في غيره لا تقبل (3).

قال خطب

Muhammad b. Ali Majiluwayh (rh) narrated to us from his uncle Muhammad b. Abi'l Qasim from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from his father from Muhammad b. Yahya al-Khazzaz from Ghiyath b. Ibrahim from al-Sadiq Jafar b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers (as). He said: Amir al-Mu'minin (as) said: I will describe Islam in a way that no one before me nor after me has described it: Islam is submission, and submission is sincerity, and sincerity is certainty, and certainty is performance, and performance is [good] action. The believer takes his religion from his Lord and not his opinion. O people! Your religion, your religion! Hold onto it, and do not allow anyone to hinder you or remove you from it. A sin in Islam is better than a good deed in other religions, for a sin in Islam can be forgiven, while a good deed in another religion is not accepted.

5 - حدثنا أحمد بن علي بن إبراهيم (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثني أبي، عن أبيه إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن الحكم، قال: دخل أبو شاكر الديصاني على أبي عبد الله الصادق (عليه السلام)، فقال له: إنك أحد النجوم الزواهر، وكان آباؤك بدورا بواهر، وأمهاتك عقيلات عباهر (4)، وعنصرك من أكرم العناصر، وإذا ذكر العلماء فبك تثني الخناصر، فخبرني أيها البحر الخضم الزاخر، ما الدليل على حدث العالم؟ فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): يستدل عليه بأقرب الاشياء، قال: وما هو؟ قال: فدعا الصادق (عليه السلام) ببيضة، فوضعها على راحته، ثم قال: هذا حصن ملموم، داخله غرقئ (1) رقيق، تطيف به فضة سائلة، وذهبة مائعة، ثم تنفلق عن مثل الطاوس، أدخلها شئ؟ قال: لا. قال: فهذا الدليل على حدث العالم. قال: أخبرت فأوجزت، وقلت فأحسنت، وقد علمت أنا لا نقبل إلا ما أدركناه بأبصارنا، أو سمعناه بآذاننا، أو لمسناه بأكفنا، أو شممناه بمناخرنا، أو ذقناه بأفواهنا، أو تصور في القلوب بيانا، واستنبطته الروايات إيقانا. فقال الصادق (عليه السلام): ذكرت الحواس الخمس، وهي لا تنفع شيئا بغير دليل، كما لا تقطع الظلمة بغير مصباح (2).

أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام

Ahmad b. `Ali b. Ibrahim (ra) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Hisham b. al-Hakam. Abu Shakir al-Disani visited Abi `Abdillah al-Sadiq (as) and said to him: You are one of the shining stars, your forefathers were brilliant full moons, your foremothers were great intellectuals, and your origins are the most noble of origins. When the scholars are mentioned, you surpass the ranks. So, inform me, O riffling ocean, what is the proof that the world was created? So, al-Sadiq (as) said to him: The nearest of things proves this. He said: And what is it? He said: So, al-Sadiq (as) called for an egg and placed it on his palm. Then, he said: This is a well-protected fortress. Inside it is a thin shell, within which flows liquid silver and liquid gold. Then, it splits open in the form of a peacock. Did anything enter it? He said: No. He said: So, this is a proof for the creation of the world. He said: You have informed me succinctly, and you have told me beautifully. I have learned that we only accept what our visions comprehend, what our ears hear, what our hands feel, what our noses smell, what our mouths taste, or what our hearts imagine or perceive with certainty. So, al-Sadiq (as): You mentioned the five senses, and they do not help anything without a proof, just as the darkness is not cut off without a sunrise.

6 - حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن يحيى العطار (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد ابن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن علي بن معبد، عن الحسين بن خالد، عن أبي الحسن علي بن موسى الرضا (عليه السلام) أنه دخل عليه رجل، فقال له: يابن رسول الله، ما الدليل على حدث العالم؟ قال: أنت لم تكن ثم كنت، وقد علمت أنك لم تكون نفسك، ولا كونك من هو مثلك (3).

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to us from `Ali b. Mu`abbad from al-Husayn b. Khalid from Abi’l Hasan `Ali b. Musa al-Rida (as). A man visited him and said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! What is the proof that the world is created? He said: You were naught and then you became. You know that you did not form yourself, nor were you formed by one like you.

7 - حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن مسرور (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن عامر، عن عمه عبد الله بن عامر، قال: حدثني أبو أحمد محمد بن زياد الازدي، عن أبان بن عثمان الاحمر، عن أبان بن تغلب، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عباس، قال: قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) لعلي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) ذات يوم وهو في  مسجد قباء والانصار مجتمعون: يا علي، أنت أخي وأنا أخوك، يا علي أنت وصيي، وخليفتي، وإمام امتي بعدي، وإلى الله من والاك، وعادى الله من عاداك، وأبغض الله من أبغضك، ونصر الله من نصرك، وخذل الله من خذلك. يا علي، أنت زوج ابنتي، وأبو ولدي. يا علي، إنه لما عرج بي إلى السماء عهد إلي ربي فيك ثلاث كلمات، فقال: يا محمد. قلت: لبيك ربي وسعديك، تبارك وتعاليت. فقال: إن عليا إمام المتقين، وقائد الغر المحجلين، ويعسوب المؤمنين (1).

Ja`far b. Muhammad b. Masrur (rh) narrated to us. He said: Al-Husayn b. Muhammad b. `Amer narrated to us from his uncle `Abdullah b. `Amer. He said: Abu Ahmad Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi narrated to me from Aban b. `Uthman al-Ahmar from Aban b. Taghlub from `Ikrama from Ibn `Abbas. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said to `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) – and they were gathered with the Ansar in the Quba Mosque on that day: O `Ali! You are my brother, and I am your brother. O `Ali! You are my deputy, my vicegerent (khalifa), and the Imam of my Nation after me. Allah aligns with those who align with you, and Allah is the enemy of those who are an enemy to you. Allah hates those who hate you, Allah supports those who support you, and Allah abandons those who abandon you. O `Ali! You are the spouse of my daughter and the father of my descendants. O `Ali! Surely, when I was taken up to heaven, my Lord promised me three things regarding you. He said to me: “O Muhammad!” I said: “I am here at Your service, my Lord, may You be glorified and exalted.” So, He said: Surely, `Ali is the Imam of the Godfearing, the Leader of the shining believers, and the Chief of the believers.

8 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا الحسن بن متيل الدقاق، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسين بن أبي الخطاب، قال: حدثنا محمد بن سنان، عن أبي الجارود زياد بن المنذر، عن أبي جعفر محمد بن على الباقر (عليه السلام)، قال: سمعت جابر بن عبد الله الانصاري يقول: إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) كان ذات يوم في منزل أم إبراهيم، وعنده نفر من أصحابه، إذ أقبل علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام)، فلما بصر به النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله) قال: يا معشر الناس، أقبل إليكم خير الناس بعدي، وهو مولاكم، طاعته مفروضة كطاعتي، ومعصيته محرمة كمعصيتي. معاشر الناس، أنا دار الحكمة، وعلي مفتاحها، ولن يوصل إلى الدار إلا بالمفتاح، وكذب من زعم أنه يحبني ويبغض عليا (2).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan (ra) narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. Matil al-Daqqaq narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Sinan narrated to us from Abi’l Jarud Ziyad b. al-Mundhir from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir (as). He said: I heard Jabir b. `Abdullah al-Ansari say: The Messenger of Allah (s) was in the house of Umm Ibrahim one day, and a delegation of his companions was with him. `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) came forward. When the Prophet (s) saw him, he said: O people! The best of people after me has come forward to you. He is your Master. Obedience to him is an obligation, just like obedience to me. Disobeying him is prohibited, just like disobeying me. O people! I am the House of Wisdom and `Ali is its Key, and the house cannot be sought except by the key. He who alleges to love me yet hates `Ali has lied.

9 - حدثنا محمد بن الحسن (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن جعفر الحميري، قال: حدثنا يعقوب بن يزيد، قال: حدثنا محمد بن أبي عمير، عن أبان بن عثمان، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) قال ذات يوم لجابر بن عبد الله الانصاري: يا جابر، إنك ستبقى حتى تلقى ولدي محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب، المعروف في التوراة بالباقر فإذا لقيته فأقرئه مني السلام.  فدخل جابر إلى علي بن الحسين (عليهما السلام) فوجد محمد بن علي (عليهما السلام) عنده غلاما، فقال له، يا غلام، أقبل. فأقبل، ثم قال له: أدبر. فأدبر، فقال جابر: شمائل رسول الله ورب الكعبة، ثم أقبل على علي بن الحسين (عليهما السلام) فقال له، من هذا؟ قال: هذا ابني، وصاحب الامر بعدي محمد الباقر. فقام جابر فوقع على قدميه يقبلهما، ويقول: نفسي لنفسك الفداء يا بن رسول الله، اقبل سلام أبيك، إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يقرأ عليك السلام. قال: فدمعت عينا أبي جعفر (عليه السلام)، ثم قال: يا جابر، على أبي رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) السلام ما دامت السماوات والارض، وعليك - يا جابر - بما بلغت السلام (1).

قال سمعت جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري يقول إن

Muhammad b. al-Hasan (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Ya`qub b. Yazid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr narrated to us from Aban b. `Uthman from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said one day to Jabir b. `Abdullah al-Ansari: O Jabir! Surely, you will remain until you meet my descendant Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Abi Talib, known in the Torah as “Baqir” (the one who splits and dissects knowledge). When you meet him, then deliver my salaam to him. So, Jabir visited `Ali b. al-Husayn (as), and he saw Muhammad b. `Ali (as) with him as a young boy. So, he said to him: O boy! Come forward. So, he came forward. Then, he said to him: Come near. So, he came near. So, Jabir said: The [same] sublime qualities of the Messenger of Allah (shama’il rasulAllah), by the Lord of the Ka`ba. Then, `Ali b. al-Husayn (as) came forward. So, he (Jabir) said to him: Who is this? He said: This is my son and the patron of the Order after me, Muhammad al-Baqir. So, Jabir fell to his feet and kissed them, saying: May my soul be your sacrifice, O son of the Messenger of Allah! The salaam of your father has been accepted. Surely, the Messenger of Allah (s) delivers the salaam to you. He said: So, the eyes of Abi Ja`far (as) filled with tears. Then, he said: O Jabir! Peace be unto my father, the Messenger of Allah (s), so long as heaven and Earth persist; and to you to, Jabir, for delivering the salaam.

10 - حدثنا أبي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن أبي عبد الله البرقي، عن أبيه، عن خلف بن حماد الاسدي، عن أبي الحسن العبدي، عن الاعمش، عن عباية بن ربعي، عن عبد الله بن عباس، قال: إن رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) لما أسري به إلى السماء، انتهى به جبرئيل إلى نهر يقال له النور، وهو قول الله عز وجل: (خلق الظلمات والنور) (2)، فلما انتهى به إلى ذلك النهر قال: له جبرئيل (عليه السلام): يا محمد، اعبر على بركة الله، فقد نور الله لك بصرك، ومد لك أمامك، فإن هذا نهر لم يعبره أحد، لا ملك مقرب، ولا نبي مرسل، غير أن لي في كل يوم اغتماسة فيه، ثم أخرج منه، فأنفض أجنحتي، فليس من قطرة تقطر من أجنحتي إلا خلق الله تبارك وتعالى منها ملكا مقربا، له عشرون ألف وجه وأربعون ألف لسان، كل لسان يلفظ بلغة لا يفقهها اللسان الآخر. فعبر رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، حتي انتهى إلى الحجب، والحجب خمسمائة حجاب، من الحجاب إلى الحجاب مسيرة خمسمائة عام، ثم قال: تقدم يا محمد. فقال له: يا جبرئيل، ولم لا تكون معي؟ قال: ليس لي أن أجوز هذا المكان. فتقدم  رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ما شاء الله أن يتقدم، حتى سمع ما قال الرب تبارك وتعالى: أنا المحمود، وأنت محمد، شققت اسمك من اسمي، فمن وصلك وصلته ومن قطعك بتلته (1) انزل إلى عبادي فأخبرهم بكرامتي إياك، وأني لم أبعث نبيا إلا جعلت له وزيرا، وأنك رسولي، وأن عليا وزيرك. فهبط رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)، فكره أن يحدث الناس بشئ كراهية أن يتهموه، لانهم كانوا حديثي عهد بالجاهلية، حتى مضى لذلك ستة أيام، فأنزل الله تبارك وتعالى: (فلعلك تارك بعض ما يوحى إليك وضائق به صدرك) (2)، فاحتمل رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ذلك حتى كان يوم الثامن، فأنزل الله تبارك وتعالى عليه (يا أيها الرسول بلغ ما أنزل إليك من ربك وإن لم تفعل فما بلغت رسالته والله يعصمك من الناس) (3)، فقال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): تهديد بعد وعيد، لامضين أمر الله عز وجل، فإن يتهموني ويكذبوني، فهو أهون علي من أن يعاقبني العقوبة الموجعة في الدنيا والآخرة. قال: وسلم جبرئيل على علي بإمرة المؤمنين، فقال علي (عليه السلام): يا رسول الله، أسمع الكلام ولا أحس الرؤية. فقال: يا علي، هذا جبرئيل، أتاني من قبل ربي بتصديق ما وعدني. ثم أمر رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) رجلا فرجلا من أصحابه حتى سلموا عليه بإمرة المؤمنين، ثم قال: يا بلال، ناد في الناس أن لا يبقى غدا أحد إلا عليل إلا خرج إلى غدير خم، فلما كان من الغد خرج رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) بجماعة أصحابه، فحمد الله وأثنى عليه، ثم قال: أيها الناس، إن الله تبارك وتعالى أرسلني إليكم برسالة، وإني ضقت بها ذرعا مخافة ان تتهموني وتكذبوني حتى أنزل الله علي وعيدا بعد وعيد،  فكان تكذيبكم إياي أيسر علي من عقوبة الله إياي، إن الله تبارك وتعالى أسرى بي وأسمعني وقال: يا محمد، أنا المحمود، وأنت محمد، شققت اسمك من اسمي، فمن وصلك وصلته، ومن قطعك بتلته (1)، انزل إلى عبادي فأخبرهم بكرامتي إياك، وأني لم أبعث نبيا إلا جعلت له وزيرا، وأنك رسولي، وأن عليا وزيرك. ثم أخذ (صلى الله عليه وآله) بيدي علي بن أبي طالب، فرفعهما حتى نظر الناس إلى بياض إبطيهما، ولم ير قبل ذلك، ثم قال: أيها الناس، إن الله تبارك وتعالى مولاي، وأنا مولى المؤمنين، فمن كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه، اللهم وال من والاه، وعاد من عاداه، وانصر من نصره، واخذل من خذله. فقال الشكاك والمنافقون والذين في قلوبهم مرض وزيع: نبرأ إلى الله من مقالة ليس بحتم، ولا نرضى أن يكون علي وزيره، هذه منه عصبية. فقال سلمان والمقداد وأبو ذر وعمار بن ياسر: والله ما برحنا العرصة حتى نزلت هذه الآية: (اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم وأتممت عليكم نعمتي ورضيت لكم الاسلام دينا) (2)، فكرر رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) ذلك ثلاثا، ثم قال: إن كمال الدين وتمام النعمة ورضا الرب بإرسالي إليكم، بالولاية بعدي لعلي بن أبي طالب (3).

قال ذات يوم لجابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah al-Barqi narrated to us from his father from Khalaf b. Hammad al-Asadi from Abi’l Hasan al-`Abdi from al-A`mash from `Uyayna b. Rabi`i from `Abdullah b. `Abbas. He said: When the Messenger of Allah (s) was taken on a journey to heaven, Gabriel brought him to a river called “The Light” (al-nur), and it is the saying of Allah, “He created the darkness and the light” (6:1). When he ended up at that river with him, Gabriel (as) said to him: O Muhammad! Ascend, upon the blessing of Allah, for Allah has illuminated your sight and stretched out your purview. Surely, no one ascends [through] this river – not an Angel of Proximity and not a commissioned prophet – except I dip in it every day, then I leave it and shake my wings. There is not a drop that drops out of my wings except that Allah creates an Angel of Proximity from it with twenty thousand faces and forty thousand tongues; each tongue pronounces in a language that the other tongue does not understand. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) ascended until he reached the veils. The veils consist of five hundred veils, and the distance between each veil is the travel distance of five hundred years. Then, he said: Proceed, Muhammad. So, he said to him: O Gabriel! Will you not be with me? He said: It is not for me to cross into this place. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) proceeded as much as Allah wished for him to proceed, until he heard what the Lord said: I am the Praiseworthy (Mahmud) and you are the Praised (Muhammad). I have derived your name from My name. So, whoever connects to you, I connect to him, and whoever cuts you off, I cut him off. Descend to My servants and inform them of how much I have honoured you. Surely, I have not sent a prophet except that I have given him a vizier. You are My Messenger, and `Ali is your vizier. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) descended, but he detested mentioning something that the people would hate lest they accuse him, as they had just come out of Jahiliyya. Six days passed, so Allah revealed: “Perhaps you may wish to abandon part of the revelation to you as it tightens your chest [with distress].” (11:12) So, the Messenger of Allah (s) bore that until the eighth day. So, Allah revealed to him: “O Messenger! Convey that which was revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not do that, then you will not have conveyed His message. Allah will protect you from the people.” (5:67) So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said: A threat after a warning. I will proceed with the order of Allah. If they accuse me and bely me, that would be better for me than His encompassing punishment in this world and the Hereafter. He said: Gabriel delivered his salaam to `Ali over his leadership over the believers, so `Ali (as) said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard the words, but I did not sense a vision. So, he said: O `Ali! This is Gabriel. He came from the direction of my Lord to confirm what was promised to me.
