Abū Muḥammad ʿAbdūs b. ʿAlī b. al-ʿAbbās al-Jurjānī narrated to us, saying that Abū ʿImrān Mūsā b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bāghishī al-Muʾaddib narrated to him among others, saying that Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Qurashī [or al-Quramī] narrated to him among others, saying that al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Khālid informed him among others, saying that Maʿrūf b. al-Walīd narrated to him among others, saying that Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to him among others, saying that Abū Ṭayba narrated to him among others, from Kurdīn and Barad al-Ḥādī [or al-Ḥādawī], from al-Rabīʿ b. Khaytham, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, from the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله, who said: “By He Who sent me forth with the Truth! Verily, Jibraʿīl has informed me, from Isrāfīl, from his Lord تبارك وتعالى, Who has said: “Whoever performs—in the last night of the month of Ramaḍān—a prayer consisting of ten units, of which each unit includes the recitation of the Opener of the Book (i.e., Sūrat al-Fātiḥa) once and the chapter of ﴾Say: “He is Allāh, Who is One”﴿ (i.e., Sūrat al-Tawḥīd) ten times, while in bowing and prostration the utterance of “Glory be to Allāh, and praise be to Allāh, there is no god but Allāh, and Allāh is ineffable” must be made ten times, and then the ritual testimony at the end of every two units. Then, after performing the invocation of peace and completing all ten units, the person should say in another invocation of peace: “I seek forgiveness from Allāh” a thousand times. After completing this invocation of forgiveness, he should return to prostration and say therein: O’ Ever-Living, o’ Sustainer of all existences, o’ Possessor of Splendour and Honour, o’ Entirely Merciful in the life of this world and the Hereafter, o’ Innately Merciful over both, o’ Most Merciful of all those who show mercy, o’ Deity of the first generations and the last! Forgive us our sins, and accept from us our prayers, fasting, and standing in worship.” The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله commented: “By He Who sent me forth with the Truth! Such a person would not raise his head from prostration until Allāh has forgiven him, accepted his (deeds in the) month of Ramaḍān, and pardoned his sins—even if he had committed seventy sins, each of which was greater than the sins of all people—and He will accept (the deeds in the month of Ramaḍān) from all the inhabitants of the land in which he resides.” [1] The Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله then said to Jibraʿīl عليه السلام: “O’ Jibraʿīl! Does Allāh accept his (good works in) Ramaḍān specifically, as well as those of the people of his land, generally?” Jibraʿīl responded: “Yes! By He Who sent you forth, it is due to his honour and the grandeur of his station with his Lord that Allāh will accept from him and from them their prayers, fasting, and standing for worship—He will forgive them their sins and answer his supplications.” The Holy Prophet continued: “By He Who sent me forth with the Truth! Verily, when a person performs this prayer and seeks forgiveness with this invocation of forgiveness, Allāh will accept from him his prayers, fasting, and standing in worship, forgive his sins, and answer his supplications, for Allāh جل جلاله says in His Book: ﴾Seek your Lord’s forgiveness, for He is truly Most Forgiving﴿ [71:10], and He says: ﴾So seek your Lord’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance﴿ [11:90]. And He has said: ﴾They are those who, upon committing an evil deed or wronging themselves, remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins—and who forgives sins except Allāh?﴿ [3:135]. And He عز وجل has also said: ﴾And seek your Lord’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance. He will grant you a good provision for an appointed term and graciously reward the doers of good﴿ [11:3]. And He عز وجل has said: ﴾Seek His forgiveness, for certainly He is ever Accepting of Repentance﴿ [110:3].” The Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم concluded: “This is a gift for me, specifically, and for my community—both its men and its women—such that Allāh عز وجل has not given this to anyone before me, whether from among the Prophets or anyone else.”
