Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: `Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Hatim narrated to us. He said: Harun b. Ishaq al-Hamadani narrated to me. He said: `Abda b. Sulayman narrated to me. He said: Kamil b. al-`Ala’ narrated to us. He said: Habib b Abi Thabit narrated to us from Sa`id b. Jubayr from `Abdullah b. `Abbas. He said:

The Messenger of Allah (s) said to `Ali b. Abi Talib : O `Ali! You are the master of my Pond, my standard bearer, the one who faces my enemies, the beloved of my heart, and the inheritor of my knowledge. You are the place of the inheritance of the prophets. You are the trustee of Allah in His Earth. You are the Proof of Allah over His creatures. You are the pillar of faith, the lantern in the darkness, the light post of guidance, and the raised flag for the people of this world. Whoever follows you is saved, and whoever turns away from you is destroyed. You are the clear road and the Straight Path. You are the Leader of the shining believers. You are the chief of the believers. You are the Master of everyone I am a Master of, and I am the Master of every believing man and woman. None will love you except he who is pure of birth, and none will hate you except he who is impure of birth. My Lord did not raise me up to heaven and speak to me except that He said to me: “O Muhammad! Recite My salaam to `Ali and make him recognize that he is the Imam of My friends and the light of the people of My obedience.” Congratulations to you, `Ali, for this honour.
