Al-Amālī

1 - حدثنا الشيخ أبو جعفر محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن موسى بن بابويه القمي (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن عمر البغدادي الحافظ، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن يزيد، قال: حدثنا محمد بن ثواب، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن منصور، عن كادح - يعني أبا جعفر البجلي -، عن عبد الله بن لهيعة، عن عبد الرحمن - يعني ابن زياد -، عن سلمة بن يسار، عن جابر بن عبد الله، قال: لما قدم علي (عليه السلام) على رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) بفتح خيبر، قال له رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): لولا أن تقول فيك طوائف من أمتي ما قالت النصارى للمسيح عيسى بن مريم، لقلت فيك اليوم قولا لا تمر بملا إلا أخذوا التراب من تحت رجليك ومن فضل طهورك يستشفون به، ولكن حسبك أن تكون مني وأنا منك، ترثني وأرثك، وإنك مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى إلا أنه لا نبي بعدي، وإنك تبرئ، ذمتي وتقاتل على سنتي، وإنك غدا على الحوض خليفتي، وإنك أول من يرد علي الحوض، وإنك أول من يكسى معي، وإنك أول داخل الجنة من أمتي، وإن شيعتك على منابر من نور، مبيضة وجوههم حولي، أشفع لهم، يكونون غدا في الجنة جيراني، وإن حربك حربي، وسلمك سلمي، وإن سرك سري، وعلانيتك علانيتي، وإن سريرة صدرك كسريرتي، وإن ولدك ولدي، وإنك تنجز عداتي، وإن الحق معك، وإن الحق على لسانك وقلبك وبين عينيك، الايمان مخالط لحمك ودمك كما خالط لحمي ودمي، وإنه لن يرد علي الحوض مبغض لك، ولن يغيب عنه محب لك حتى يرد الحوض معك. قال: فخر علي (عليه السلام) ساجدا، ثم قال: الحمد لله الذي أنعم علي بالاسلام، وعلمني القرآن، وحببني إلى خير البرية خاتم النبيين وسيد المرسلين، إحسانا منه وفضلا منه علي. قال: فقال النبي (صلى الله عليه وآله): لولا أنت لم يعرف المؤمنون بعدي (1).

Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babuwayh al-Qummi (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Umar al-Baghdadi al-Hafith narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Yazid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Thawab narrated to us. He said: Ishaq b. Masnur narrated to us from Kadih – meaning Aba Ja`far al-Bajali – from `Abdullah b. Lahi`a from `Abd al-Rahman – meaning Ibn Ziyad from Salama b. Yasar from Jabir b. `Abdullah. He said: When `Ali (as) went to the Messenger of Allah (s) in the conquest of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah (s) said to him: If sects from my Nation would not claim for you what the Christians have claimed for the Messiah Jesus the son of Mary, I would have said something about you today that would cause the people to take the dust from beneath your feet and seek treatment from it due to the excellence of your purity. However, it is enough [to say] that you are from me and I am from you. You inherit from me, and I inherit from you. You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except there is no prophet after me. You fight upon my Sunna, and tomorrow you will be upon the Pond as my vicegerent. You will be the first to return to me at the Pond, and you will be the first to be gowned with me. You will be the first to enter Paradise from my Nation, and your followers will be upon pulpits made of light with illuminated faces around me. I will intercede for them, and tomorrow they will be my neighbours in Paradise. Your war is my war, and your peace is my peace. Your secret is my secret, and your pronouncement is my pronouncement. Your peace at heart is like my peace. Your descendants are my descendants. You will encounter my enemies. The truth is with you, and the truth is upon your tongue, in your heart, and upon your forehead. Faith is mixed into your flesh and blood just as it is mixed into my flesh and blood. No one that hates you will return to me at the Pond, and no one that loves you will be absent from it – they will return to the Pond with you. He said: So, `Ali (as) fell in prostration, then said: “Praise be to Allah, who blessed me with Islam, and taught me the Qur'an, and made me love the best of people, the Seal of Prophets and Master of Messengers; as an eminence and a favour from Him.” He said: So, the Prophet (s) said: Were it not for you, the believers would not be recognizable after me.

2 - حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان، قال: حدثنا العباس بن الفضل المقرئ، قال: حدثنا أبو الحسن علي بن الفرات الاصبهاني، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد البصري، قال: حدثنا جندل بن والق، قال: حدثنا علي بن حماد، عن سعيد، عن ابن عباس: أنه مر بمجلس من مجالس قريش وهم يسبون علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام)، فقال لقائده: ما يقول هؤلاء؟ قال: يسبون عليا. قال: قربني إليهم، فلما أن أوقف عليهم، قال: أيكم الساب الله؟ قالوا: سبحان الله! من يسب الله فقد أشرك بالله. قال: فأيكم الساب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله)؟ قالوا: من يسب رسول الله فقد كفر. قال: فأيكم الساب علي بن أبي طالب؟ قالوا: قد كان ذلك. قال: فأشهد بالله وأشهد لله، لقد سمعت رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) يقول: من سب عليا فقد سبني، ومن سبني فقد سب الله عزوجل، ثم مضى. فقال لقائده: فهل قالوا شيئا حين قلت لهم ما قلت؟ قال: ما قالوا شيئا. قال: كيف رأيت وجوههم؟ قال: نظروا إليك بأعين محمرة * * نظر التيوس إلى شفار الجازر قال: زدني فداك أبوك. قال: خزر الحواجب، ناكسو أذقانهم * * نظر الذليل إلى العزيز القاهر قال: زدني فداك أبوك. قال: ما عندي غير هذا. قال: لكن عندي. أحياؤهم خزي على أمواتهم * * والميتون فضيحة للغابر (1)

Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: al-`Abbas b. al-Fadl al-Muqri’ narrated to us. He said: Abu’l Hasan `Ali b. al-Furat al-Isfahani narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Basri narrated to us. He said: Jundal b. Waliq narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Hammad narrated to us from Sa`id from Ibn `Abbas. He passed by a gathering of Quraysh that was insulting `Ali b. Abi Talib (as), so he said to his guide: What are these people saying? He said: They are insulting `Ali. He said: Bring me closer to them. When he reached them, he said: Did you insult Allah? They said: May Allah be glorified! Whoever insults Allah has associated partners with Allah. He said: Then, did you insult the Messenger of Allah (s)? They said: Whoever insults the Messenger of Allah has disbelieved. He said: Then, did you insult `Ali b. Abi Talib (as)? They said: This is what happened. He said: I testify by Allah and I testify for Allah that I heard the Messenger of Allah (s) say: “Whoever insults `Ali has insulted me, and whoever insults me has insulted Allah.” Then, he went. So, he said to his guide: Did they say anything when I said what I said to them? He said: They did not say anything. He said: Did you see [the expressions on] their faces? He said: They looked at you with reddened eyes, as a goat looks to the knife of a butcher. He said: Explain further for me, may your father be your sacrifice. He said: The eyes squinted and the brows furrowed, the ears lowered in humiliation – it was the look of a servile man to a glorious and dominant man. He said: Explain further for me, may your father be your sacrifice. He said: I have nothing except this. He said: Rather, to me, their living ones are a humiliation for their dead ones, and their dead ones are a shame for the ancients.

3 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى، عن علي بن الحكم، عن مثنى الحناط، عن أبي بصير، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: سمعته يقول: من صلى أربع ركعات بمائتي مرة (قل هو الله أحد) في كل ركعة خمسين مرة، لم ينفتل وبينه وبين الله عزوجل ذنب إلا غفر له (2).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa from `Ali b. al-Hakam from Muthanna al-Hannat from Abi Basir from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: I heard him say: Whoever prays four units with two hundred recitations of qul huwallahu ahad – fifty times per unit – there will not remain a sin between him and Allah except that it has been forgiven for him.

حدثنا محمد بن الحسن بن أحمد بن الوليد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن الحسن الصفار، عن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن زيد الشحام، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليه السلام)، قال: ما من عبد يقول كل يوم سبع مرات: أسأل الله الجنة، وأعوذ بالله من النار، إلا قالت النار: يا رب أعذه مني (3).

Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us from Ibrahim b. Hashim from Muhammad b. Abi Umayr from Zayd al-Shahham from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: A worshiper does not say [the following] seven times per day -- I ask Allah for Paradise, and I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire -- except that the Fire says: "O Lord! Give him refuge from me."

5 - حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن يحيى العطار (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا سعد بن عبد الله، عن يعقوب بن يزيد، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن معاوية بن وهب، عن معاذ ابن مسلم، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: اصبر على أعداء النعم، فإنك لن تكافئ من عصى الله فيك بأفضل من أن تطيع الله فيه (4).

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar (rh) narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Mu`awiya b. Wahb from Mu`adh b. Muslim from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Be patient with those who oppose blessing, for there is no better way to deal with those who disobey Allah than to obey Allah.

6 - حدثنا الحسين بن أحمد بن إدريس (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثنا أبي، عن محمد بن الحسين بن أبي الخطاب، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن جعفر الازدي، عن عمرو بن أبي المقدام، قال: سمعت أبا جعفر الباقر (عليه السلام) يقول: من قرأ آية الكرسي مرة، صرف الله عنه ألف مكروه من مكروه الدنيا وألف مكروه من مكروه الآخرة، أيسر مكروه الدنيا الفقر، وأيسر مكروه الآخرة عذاب القبر (1)؟

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris (rh) narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi'l Khattab from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Ja`far al-Azdi from `Amr b. Abi'l Miqdam. He said: I heard Aba Ja`far al-Baqir (as) say: Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi once, Allah repels one thousand hateful things from this world and one thousand hateful things of the Hereafter from him. The least of the hateful things from this world would be poverty, and the least of the hateful things of the next world would be the punishment of the grave.

7 - حدثنا علي بن الحسين بن شاذويه المؤدب (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن جعفر بن جامع الحميري، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن محمد، عن أبيه عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن سيف بن عميرة، عن مدرك بن الهزهاز، قال: قال الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام): يا مدرك، رحم الله عبدا اجتر مودة الناس إلينا، فحدثهم بما يعرفون، وترك ما ينكرون (2).

Ali b. al-Husayn b. Shadhuwayh al-Mu'addab (ra) narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Abdullah b. Ja`far b. Jami` al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad narrated to us from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Sayf b. `Umayra from Mudrik b. al-Hazhar. He said: al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said: O Mudrik! May Allah have mercy on a servant who causes the people to love us, narrating what they would recognize, and leaving what they would deny.

8 - حدثنا أبي (رحمه الله)، قال: حدثني علي بن إبراهيم بن هاشم، عن أبيه، عن محمد بن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن سالم، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: إن داود (عليه السلام) خرج ذات يوم يقرأ الزبور، وكان إذا قرأ الزبور لا يبقى جبل ولا حجر ولا طائر ولا سبع إلا جاوبه، فما زال يمر حتى انتهى إلى جبل، فإذا على ذلك الجبل نبي عابد، يقال له: حزقيل، فلما سمع دوي الجبال وأصوات السباع والطير، علم أنه داود (عليه السلام)، فقال داود: يا حزقيل، أتأذن لي فأصعد إليك. قال: لا. فبكى داود (عليه السلام)، فأوحى الله جل جلاله إليه: يا حزقيل: لا تعير داود، وسلني العافية، فقام حزقيل، فأخذ بيد داود فرفعه إليه، فقال داود: يا حزقيل: هل هممت بخطيئة قط؟ قال: لا. قال: فهل دخلك العجب مما أنت فيه من عبادة الله عزوجل؟ قال: لا. قال: فهل ركنت إلى الدنيا فأحببت أن تأخذ من شهوتها ولذتها؟ قال: بلى، ربما عرض بقلبي. قال: فماذا تصنع إذا كان ذلك؟ قال: ادخل هذا الشعب فأعتبر بما فيه. قال: فدخل داود (عليه السلام) ذلك الشعب، فإذا سرير من حديد، عليه جمجمة بالية وعظام فانية، وإذا لوح من حديد فيه كتابة، فقرأها داود (عليه السلام) فإذا هي: أنا أروى شلم (3)، ملكت ألف سنة، وبنيت ألف مدينة، وافتضضت ألف بكر، فكان آخر أمري أن صار التراب فراشي، والحجارة وسادتي، والديدان والحيات جيراني، فمن رآني فلا يغتر بالدنيا (1).

My father (rh) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim b. Hashim narrated to me from his father from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Hisham b. Salim from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: One day, Dawud (as) went to recite the Psalms. Whenever he would recite the Psalms, there would not remain a mountain, a stone, a bird, nor a creature except that it would repeat after him. So, he did not stop walking until he reached a mountain. Upon that mountain was a cloistered prophet called Hizqil. When he heard the sound of the mountains and the voices of the creatures and the birds, he knew that it was Dawud (as). So, Dawud said: O Hizqil! Do you permit me to climb up to you? He said: No. So, Dawud (as) wept. So, Allah revealed to him: "O Hizqil! Do not humiliate Dawud and ask Me for My forgiveness." So, Hizqil stood, took the hand of Dawud, and helped him up to him. So, Dawud said: O Hizqil! Have you ever been tempted to sin? He said: No. He said: Have you ever been alarmed by your state of worshiping Allah? He said: No. He said: Have you went into this world and wanted to take from its lustful and pleasurable things? He said: Of course -- perhaps it came to my heart. He said: What do you do when that happens? He said: I go to this cave and I contemplate over it. He said: So, Dawud (as) went to that cave and came across an iron bed with a decomposed skull and withering bones atop it. He came across an iron tablet with writing on it. Dawud (as) read it and it said: "I am Arwa Shalam. I ruled for one thousand years, I built one thousand cities, and I had sex with one thousand virgins. Yet, in the end, dust became my bed, rocks became my masters, and worms and snakes became my neighbours. To whoever sees me: do not be deceived by this world."

9 - حدثنا أحمد بن زياد (رضي الله عنه)، قال: حدثنا علي بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، قال: حدثنا أبو أحمد محمد بن زياد الازدي، عن أبان بن عثمان وغيره، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام)، قال: من ختم صيامه بقول صالح أو عمل صالح، تقبل الله منه صيامه. فقيل له: يا بن رسول الله، ما القول الصالح؟ قال: شهادة أن لا إله إلا الله، والعمل الصالح: إخراج الفطرة (2).

Ahmad b. Ziyad (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father. He said: Abu Ahmad Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi narrated to us from Aban b. `Uthman and others from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as). He said: Whoever completes his fast with a good saying or a good action, Allah will accept his fast. So, it was said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah! What is the good saying? He said: The testimony that there is no god but Allah; and the good action is giving out [zakat] al-Fitra.

10 - حدثنا محمد بن إبراهيم بن إسحاق (رحمه الله)، قال: أخبرني أحمد ابن محمد الهمداني، قال: أخبرنا المنذر بن محمد، قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن عبد الله الكوفي، عن أبيه، عن عبد الله بن الفضل الهاشمي، عن الصادق جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه، عن جده (عليهم السلام)، قال: خطب أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (عليه السلام) الناس يوم الفطر، فقال: أيها الناس، إن يومكم هذا يوم يثاب فيه المحسنون، ويخسر فيه المسيئون، وهو أشبه يوم بيوم قيامتكم، فاذكروا بخروجكم من منازلكم إلى مصلاكم خروجكم من الاجداث إلى ربكم، واذكروا بوقوفكم في مصلاكم وقوفكم بين يدي ربكم، واذكروا برجوعكم إلى منازلكم رجوعكم إلى منازلكم في الجنة أو النار، واعلموا - عباد الله - أن أدنى ما للصائمين والصائمات أن يناديهم ملك في آخر يوم من شهر رمضان: ابشروا عباد الله، فقد غفر لكم ما سلف من ذنوبكم، فانظروا كيف تكونون فيما تستأنفون (3).

Muhammad b. Ibrahim b. Ishaq (rh) narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Hamadani informed me. He said: Al-Mundhir b. Muhammad informed us. He said: Isma`il b. `Abdullah al-Kufi narrated to us from his father from `Abdullah b. al-Fadl al-Hashimi from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his grandfather (as). He said: Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib (as) gave a sermon to the people on the Day of Fitr, saying: O people! This day of yours is the day when the righteous are rewarded and when the wrongdoers lose. This day of yours is a day most resembling the day of your resurrection. So, remember how your exit from your houses to your places of prayer is like your exit from your bodies to your Lord. Remember how your standing in your places of prayer is like your standing before your Lord. Remember how your return to your houses is like your return to your houses in Paradise or the Fire. Know, O worshipers of Allah, that an angel calls to the fasting men and women on the last day of the month of Ramadan, saying: “Be glad, worshipers of Allah, for your past sins have been forgiven. So, look to how you resume.”

11 - وقال الصادق جعفر بن محمد (عليهما السلام) لبعض أصحابه: إذا كان ليلة الفطر، فصل المغرب ثلاثا، ثم اسجد وقل في سجودك، يا ذا الطول، يا ذا الحول، يا مصطفي محمد وناصره، صل على محمد وآل محمد، واغفر لي كل ذنب أذنبته ونسيته وهو عندك في كتاب مبين. ثم تقول مائة مرة: أتوب إلى الله. وكبر بعد المغرب والعشاء الآخرة وصلاة الغداة وصلاة العيد كما تكبر أيام التشريق، تقول: الله أكبر، الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر، الله أكبر ولله الحمد، الله أكبر على ما هدانا، والحمد لله على ما أبلانا. ولا تقل فيه: ورزقنا من بهيمة الانعام، فإن ذلك إنما هو في أيام التشريق (1).

Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad (as) said to some of his companions: On the eve of al-Fitr, pray the three units of Maghrib, then prostrate and say the following in your prostration: “O Everlasting, O Powerful, O Selector and Supporter of Muhammad! Bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad and forgive me of every sin that I have committed and forgotten that is with You in the Manifest Book (Ya thal tawl, ya thal hawl, ya mustafi Muhammad wa nasirih, salli `ala Muhammad wa aali Muhammad, waghfir li kulli dhanbin adhnabtahu wa nasaytahu wa huwa `indika fii kitabin mubin).” Then say the following one hundred times: “I repent to Allah” (atubu illallah), and do takbir after al-Maghrib, the Final `Isha’, and morning prayer, and the Eid prayer, just as you do takbir in the days of Tashriq; saying: “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah is the Praise. Allah is the Greatest over what He has guided us to, and praise be to Allah over what He has made us face (Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil hamd. Allahu akbar `ala ma hadana, walhamdulillah `ala ma ablana).” But, do not say: “Provide us with the cattle of livestock (warzuqna min bahimat al-an`am)”, for that is only for the days of Tashriq.
