[Pooya/Ali Commentary 3:76] As stated in the preceding verse fulfilment of a covenant is a quality of the pious whom Allah loves . It also refers to the covenant the Holy Prophet obtained from his followers at Ghadir Khum-"Of whomsoever I am the mawla (lord master) Ali is his mawla." (See commentary of al Ma-idah: 67). Bayat, or allegiance to the Holy Prophet, or acceptance of his order is a covenant with Allah. Those who turned on their heels, or deserted him in the hour of need, or wilfully ignored his declaration, have actually broken the covenant made with Allah. The books of Islamic history clearly mention the names of such persons.
