It is narrated from Abu Abdullah
عليه السلام that a man came to Imam
عليه السلام and said: "I have neighbors who have slave girls that sing and play the lute. Sometimes I go to the restroom and sit for a long time, listening to them." Imam
عليه السلام replied: "Do not do that." The man said: "By Allah
سبحانه وتعالى, I do not go to them with my feet; it is only listening that I do with my ears." Al-Sadiq
عليه السلام said: "By Allah
سبحانه وتعالى, have you not heard Allah’s
سبحانه وتعالى words: 'Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - all those will be questioned about' (Quran
17:36)?" The man said: "It is as if I have never heard this verse from Allah’s
سبحانه وتعالى Book, neither from an Arab nor a non-Arab. Truly, I will leave this act, and I seek forgiveness from Allah
سبحانه وتعالى, the Exalted." Al-Sadiq
عليه السلام then said: "Go, perform ghusl, and pray as much as you wish, for indeed you were persisting in a grave matter. How bad your state would have been if you had died in that condition! Seek Allah’s
سبحانه وتعالى forgiveness and ask Him
سبحانه وتعالى for repentance from everything He
سبحانه وتعالى dislikes, for He
سبحانه وتعالى dislikes only what is evil. Leave what is evil to its people, for every matter has its people."
