Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. al-Walīd narrated to us, saying that al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan b. Abān narrated to him among others, from al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd, from al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUlwān, from ʿAmrū b. Shimr, from Jābir (b. Yazīd al-Ju‘fī), from Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir عليه السلام, who said: “When the Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وعلى آله would spy the crescent moon of the month of Ramaḍān, he would turn his face towards the Qibla and then say: “O’ Allāh, let this appear to us with security and faith, peace and Islam, good health and wellness, expansive provision, the repulsion of diseases, recitation of the Qurʾān, and assistance in prayer and fasting. O’ Allāh, secure us for Ramaḍān, secure it for us, and secure it from us until the month of Ramaḍān passes on and You have forgiven us.” Then he would turn his face to the people and state: “O’ throng of Muslims, when the crescent moon heralding the month of Ramaḍān arises, the devils are shackled [or the Devil is shackled], and the gates of the sky, the gates of the Heavens, and the gates of mercy are opened while the gates to the fires of Hell are shut, and supplications are answered. Every time the fast is broken at sunset, there are people with Allāh عز وجل due for exoneration from the Fire, so He would exonerate them, and then a caller calls out every night: “Is there anyone who wants to ask (Me for something)? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness?” O’ Allāh, give every benefactor a replacement (for what he had freely given others) and give every miser ruination.” When the crescent moon appeared heralding the month of Shawwāl, the believers would be called out: “Proceed to your rewards, for it is the day of reward.” Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir عليه السلام then concluded: “By He in Whose hand is my soul, it is not a reward (counted) in dinars and dirhams.”
