Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from al-Qasim b. Muhammad al-Isfahani from Sulayman b. Dawud al-Munqari from Hafs b. Ghiyath. He said: I said to al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad : Inform me about the saying of Allah, “The month of Ramadan, in which the Quran was revealed” (2:185) – how is it that the Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan when the Quran was revealed over a period of twenty years from beginning to end? So, he said:

The Quran came down altogether in the month of Ramadan to the Bayt al-Ma`mur. Then, it was revealed from the Bayt al-Ma`mur over a period of twenty years.
