Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani al-Mukattib narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Harun al-Sufi narrated to us. He said: `Ubaydallah b. Musa al-Habbal al-Tabari narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn al-Khashab narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Muhsan narrated to us from Yunus b. Thibyan. He said: Al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad said:

Surely, the people worship Allah for three reasons. (1) One group worship Him out of desire for His reward – that is the worship of the possessive, and it is of greed. (2) Others who worship out of fear of the Fire – that is the worship of the slaves, and it is of fright. (3) But, I worship Him out of love for Him – that is the worship of the nobles, and it is of safety, as He says, “and they will be safe from the horror of that day” (27:89), and as He says, “Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; and Allah will love you and forgive your sins.” (3:31) Whoever loves Allah, Allah will love him; and whoever Allah loves, he will be of the safe ones.
