Another issue is raised to the author of the book: Do you know of any leader among the rightful Imams better than the Commander of the Faithful
? If he says: No, he is then asked: Do you know of any wrongdoing—after polytheism and disbelief—worse and greater than what was committed by the people of Saqīfa? If he says: No, then he is asked: Are you more knowledgeable than the Commander of the Faithful
regarding enjoining good, forbidding evil, and jihad? He must say: The Commander of the Faithful. Then it is said to him: Why did he not fight those people? And if he gives any excuse, we say: Then accept the same excuse from the Imamiyyah. For everyone knows that today falsehood is stronger than it was in that time, and the supporters of Satan are more numerous. So do not intimidate us with talk of jihad, for Allah only obligated it with specific conditions. Had you known them, your speech would have been shorter, and your book more concise. We ask Allah for success.
Another issue: It is said to the author of the book: Do you approve of al-Hasan b. ʿAlī
making peace with Muʿāwiya, or do you consider him mistaken? If they say: We approve, they are then asked: Do you approve even though he abandoned jihad and refrained from enjoining good and forbidding evil in the way you advocate? If they say: We approve because the people abandoned him, and he could not trust them, and he had no companions with insight capable of resisting Muʿāwiya and his forces—if they acknowledge this—then it is said: If al-Hasan
is excused in this despite having his father’s army, people preaching for him from the pulpits, and having unsheathed his sword and marched to fight the enemy of Allah, then why do you not excuse Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad
for refraining from jihad, especially when his enemies in his time were far more numerous than those of Muʿāwiya, and he had not even a hundred trained supporters? They were only hidden companions who had never seen battle nor witnessed combat. If you accept this excuse, then you have acted justly. But if someone refuses to do so, then let him state the distinction—though there is none.
Furthermore, if the Zaydī analogy is valid, then Zayd b. ʿAlī is superior to al-Hasan
, for al-Hasan made peace while Zayd fought until he was killed. And any doctrine that leads to preferring Zayd b. ʿAlī over al-Hasan b. ʿAlī
is despicable. Allah is the One sought for help, and He is sufficient for us and the best protector.
We mentioned these discussions at the beginning of our book because they represent the core objections relied upon by the Zaydīs and what is answered against them, for they are the most challenging sect we face. We have mentioned the Prophets and divine proofs who experienced occultation (ṣalawāt Allāh ʿalayhim), and at the end of the book, we referenced the long-lived figures, so that what we say regarding occultation and long life falls within the bounds of plausibility rather than absurdity. Then we affirmed the textual designations for the twelfth Imam from among the Imams (ʿalayhi wa ʿalayhim al-salām), both from Allah the Exalted and from His Messenger and the eleven Imams (ṣalawāt Allāh ʿalayhim), along with their reports foretelling the occultation. We then detailed his birth (ʿalayhi al-salām), those who witnessed him, the signs and proofs verified from him, and the letters that came from him—establishing the proof against those who deny the friend of Allah who is hidden under the veil of Allah’s protection. Allah is the grantor of success, and He is the best One sought for aid.
