Then the author of the book said: Just as God commanded the ʿitrah to call to righteousness, He described the precedence of those who came first among them, made them witnesses, and commanded them to uphold justice, saying: "O you who believe, be steadfast for God, witnesses in justice." He then followed this with a kind of interpretation and recitation of verses from the Qur'an, claiming they refer to the ʿitrah, without providing any proof beyond assertion. Then he said: God obligated His Prophet ﷺ to refrain from commanding and forbidding until He prepared for him supporters, as He said: "When you see those who engage in [blasphemy] against Our signs... so that perhaps they may become mindful." Thus, whoever is not among the foremost in good deeds, those who struggle in God’s cause, nor among the moderate who preach righteousness when there is a lack of helpers, then such a person is among those who wrong themselves. This, he claimed, was also the way of the descendants of past prophets. Then he recited more verses from the Qur’an.
He is asked: Against whom is this statement directed? But first, tell us: the Imam from the ʿitrah in your view—what category does he belong to? If he says: Among those who fight in God's cause, it is said to him: Who is he? Whom did he fight? Is it known that he went out? Where are his cavalry and his infantry? If he says: He is among those who preach good and forbid evil in the absence of helpers, it is said to him: Who has heard his commands or prohibitions? If he says: His supporters and inner circle, we say: If this suffices and his duties are waived due to the lack of helpers and only his allies hear his commands, then what criticism do you have of the Imamiyyah? Why did you write this book? At whom is it directed?
And we ask: Against whom did you strike with the verses of the Qur’an, obligating upon him the duty of jihād? Then it is said to him and to the Zaydīs altogether: Tell us—if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left this world without appointing ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib
or pointing to him or alluding to him, would that have been a correct and wise act, and would it have been permissible? If they say: Yes, then we ask them: And if he had not designated the ʿitrah at all, would that have been permissible? If they say: Yes, we ask: Then why do you condemn the Muʿtazilites, the Murjiʾites, and the Khārijites? It would have been permissible for no designation to occur, and for the matter to be left to consultation among the people of influence and decision. And this is inescapable.
But if they say: No, the Prophet ﷺ must designate ʿAlī
, and there must be evidence pointing to the ʿitrah, they are asked: Why? Once they mention the valid proof, we say: Transfer that same reasoning to the Imam in every age, for if designation was necessary in one time, it is necessary in every time—since the causes that necessitate it always exist.
And we seek refuge in Allah from disgrace.
