Another question to be posed to them is: Tell us about your Imam today—does he possess knowledge of the lawful and unlawful? If they say: Yes, we say: Then tell us—what he possesses that is not found in the mass-transmitted reports, is it similar to what al-Shāfiʿī and Abū Ḥanīfa and others like them had, or is it different? If they say: Rather, he has what they had and of the same kind, we say to them: Then what need do people have for the knowledge of your Imam who is unheard of, while the books of al-Shāfiʿī and Abū Ḥanīfa are public, widespread, and accessible? And if they say: Rather, he has knowledge that differs from theirs, we say: Is it the derived text that some Muʿtazilī elders claim—namely, that all matters are subject to the intellect except that which comes through conclusive transmission, as per the school of al-Naẓẓām and his followers—or is it the Imami view that rulings are explicitly designated? And know that we do not say “explicitly designated” in the way that first comes to mind, but designated in generalities, such that one who understands them understands the rulings without analogy or ijtihād. If they say: He has something contrary to all of this, then they have exited the realm of the familiar. And if they cling to one of the known schools, it is said to them: Where is that knowledge? Has anyone known for his piety and trustworthiness transmitted it from your Imam? If they say: Yes, it is said to them: We have lived among you for a long time and have not heard a single word of this knowledge. And you are a people who do not believe in taqiyyah, nor does your Imam—so where is his knowledge, and why has it not appeared and spread? But tell us, what guarantees us that you are not lying? For you accuse the Imamis of lying about Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad
, and there is no clear way to distinguish the two cases.
Another issue: It is said to them: Do you not hold that Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad did not follow the views of the Imamis and was upon your doctrine and religion? They must say: Yes, unless they wish to disassociate from him. Then it is said to them: So the Imamis lied in what they transmitted from him, and the authored books in their hands are the works of liars? If they say: Yes, then it is said to them: If that is possible, then why is it not also possible that your Imam holds the beliefs of the Imamis and follows their religion, and what your predecessors and elders report from him is fabricated and baseless? And if they say: We do not have, in this time, an Imam we can identify by name from whom we transmit knowledge of the lawful and unlawful—but we know that among the ʿitrah there is someone fit for this role—we say to them: Then you have fallen into the very thing you criticized the Imamis for, even though they have with them reports from their Imams containing designation of their current Imam, references to him, and glad tidings of him.
All that you related about jihad, enjoining good, and forbidding evil is thus rendered void, for your Imam is one who is unseen and unknown. So say what you like. We seek refuge in Allah from disgrace.
