The Rings (Insignia)
17 Aḥadīth

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ خَاتَمُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مِنْ وَرِقٍ .


1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the ring of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was made of leaf (dirham).’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ وَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ خَاتَمُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مِنْ وَرِقٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ كَانَ فِيهِ فَصٌّ قَالَ لَا .


2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan and Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the ring (insignia) of the Messenger of Allah, was made of leaf (dirham).’ I then asked if it had any stone, and he (the Imam) said, ‘No, it did not have a stone.’”

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْكُوفِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْسِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْمِنْقَرِيِّ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ ظَبْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ لُبْسُ الْخَاتَمِ .


3. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufiy from ‘Ubays ibn Hisham from Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Minqariy from Yunus ibn Zabayan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Wearing the ring (insignia) is of the noble tradition.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ قَالَ الْفَصُّ مُدَوَّرٌ وَ قَالَ هَكَذَا كَانَ خَاتَمُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) .


4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn Hashim from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “He (the Imam) (a.s), has said, ‘The stone of a ring is round and that is how the ring of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, was.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ غَالِبِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لِأَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَخَتَّمْ بِالذَّهَبِ فَإِنَّهُ زِينَتُكَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ.


5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Ghalib ibn ‘Uthman from Ruh ibn ‘Abd al- Rahim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said to ’Amir al- Mu’minin, ‘Your ring must not be made of gold because it is your beautification in the next life.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَخَتَّمُوا بِغَيْرِ الْفِضَّةِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) قَالَ مَا طَهُرَتْ كَفٌّ فِيهَا خَاتَمُ حَدِيدٍ .


6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Do not use any ring other than what is made of silver, because the Messenger of Allah has said, “A hand which has a ring of iron does not become clean.’””

أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ جَرَّاحٍ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَجْعَلْ فِي يَدِكَ خَاتَماً مِنْ ذَهَبٍ .


7. Ahmad ibn Muhammad from has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Do not wear on your hand a ring of gold.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ التَّخَتُّمِ فِي الْيَمِينِ وَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ يَتَخَتَّمُونَ فِي أَيْمَانِهِمْ فَقَالَ كَانَ أَبِي يَتَخَتَّمُ فِي يَسَارِهِ وَ كَانَ أَفْضَلَهُمْ وَ أَفْقَهَهُمْ .


8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban from Yahya ibn abu al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about wearing the ring on the right hand saying, ‘I have seen banu Hashim wearing rings on their right hands.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘My father would wear it on his left hand and he was the most excellent among them with more power of wisdom.’” (This is because of Taqiyah, according to al-Majlisy)

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَخِي مُوسَى ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْخَاتَمِ يُلْبَسُ فِي الْيَمِينِ فَقَالَ إِنْ شِئْتَ فِي الْيَمِينِ وَ إِنْ شِئْتَ فِي الْيَسَارِ .


9. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from Ali ibn Asbat from Ali ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “I once asked my brother, Musa (a.s), about the ring; if it is worn on the right hand. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can wear it on the right or left, as you wish.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَا تَخَتَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِلَّا يَسِيراً حَتَّى تَرَكَهُ .


10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Ali ibn ‘ Atiyyah who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah used the ring for a very little time and then he (the Messenger of Allah) abandoned it.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ يَتَخَتَّمُ فِي يَمِينِهِ .


11. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would wear the ring on his right hand.’”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ قَالَ كَانَ عَلِيٌّ وَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ ( صلوات الله عليهم ) يَتَخَتَّمُونَ فِي أَيْسَارِهِمْ .


12. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith the following is narrated: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that Ali, al-Hassan and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, would wear the ring on their left hands.’”

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ مُثَنًّى الْحَنَّاطِ عَنْ حَاتِمِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ ( عليهما السلام ) يَتَخَتَّمَانِ فِي يَسَارِهِمَا .


13. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Muthanna’ al-Hannat from Hatim ibn Tsma‘il who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that al-Hassan and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore the ring on their left hands.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ ( عليهما السلام ) يَتَخَتَّمَانِ فِي يَسَارِهِمَا .


14. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Aban from Yahya ibn abu al-‘Ala’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that al-Hassan and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore the ring on their left hands.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَرْزَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) كَانَ يَتَخَتَّمُ فِي يَمِينِهِ .


15. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Salih ibn al-Sindiy from Ja‘far ibn Bashir from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that al-Hassan and al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wore the ring on their right hands (fingers).”’

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْعَرْزَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) يَتَخَتَّمُ فِي يَمِينِهِ .


16. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin would wear the ring on his right hand.’”

سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَوَّمُوا خَاتَمَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَخَذَهُ أَبِي مِنْهُمْ بِسَبْعَةٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ بِسَبْعَةِ دَرَاهِمَ قَالَ بِسَبْعَةِ دَنَانِيرَ .


17. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Safwan who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s), has said, ‘They evaluated the ring of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and my father bought it for seven.’ I then asked, ‘Was it seven dirham?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It was seven dinars.’”
