Book 5, Chapter 40

Eating with the Guest
4 Aḥadīth

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا أَكَلَ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ أَوَّلَ مَنْ يَضَعُ يَدَهُ مَعَ الْقَوْمِ وَ آخِرَ مَنْ يَرْفَعُهَا إِلَى أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الْقَوْمُ .


1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ariy from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when eating food with a people would, as the first one, begin eating and the be last to stop it, so that the people complete eating.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِذَا أَكَلَ مَعَ قَوْمٍ طَعَاماً كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ يَضَعُ يَدَهُ وَ آخِرَ مَنْ يَرْفَعُهَا لِيَأْكُلَ الْقَوْمُ .


2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal f, ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, when eating food with a people would, as the first one, begin eating and be the last to stop it, so that the people complete eating.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الزَّائِرَ إِذَا زَارَ الْمَزُورَ فَأَكَلَ مَعَهُ أَلْقَى عَنْهُ الْحِشْمَةَ وَ إِذَا يَأْكُلُ مَعَهُ يَنْقَبِضُ قَلِيلًا .


3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-’Aziz from Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), saying, ‘When a visitor visits someone and eats with him, formality comes down, and when he eats with him (the visitor) feels constraint a little.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَفْصٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ مُوسَى ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ إِذَا أَتَاهُ الضَّيْفُ أَكَلَ مَعَهُ وَ لَمْ يَرْفَعْ يَدَهُ مِنَ الْخِوَانِ حَتَّى يَرْفَعَ الضَّيْفُ يَدَهُ .


4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Sulayman ibn Hafs from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother, Musa (a.s), has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s), has said, that when a guest would come to the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, he (the Messenger of Allah) would eat with him and would not stop eating before the guest did.’”
