7 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) سُئِلَ عَنِ الْقَرْعِ يُذْبَحُ فَقَالَ الْقَرْعُ لَيْسَ يُذَكَّى فَكُلُوهُ وَ لَا تَذْبَحُوهُ وَ لَا يَسْتَهْوِيَنَّكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ .

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin was asked about squash if it needs to be slaughtered. He (the Imam) said, ‘Squash does not need slaughtering. Do not slaughter it and do not allow Satan, may Allah condemn him, to seduce you.’”

Ḥadīth 2

وَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُعْجِبُهُ الدُّبَّاءُ فِي الْقُدُورِ وَ هُوَ الْقَرْعُ .

2. Through the same chain of narrators as that of the previous Hadith, the following is narrated: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked calabash, gourd in the cooking pot. It is squash.”’

Ḥadīth 3

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُعْجِبُهُ الدُّبَّاءُ وَ يَلْتَقِطُهُ مِنَ الصَّحْفَةِ .

3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Tsa from ibn Faddal from ‘Abd Allah ibn Maymun al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah liked gourd, calabash, and picked it up from the dish.’”

Ḥadīth 4

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الشَّامِيِّ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ حَنْظَلَةَ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا ( عليهما السلام ) قَالَ الدُّبَّاءُ يَزِيدُ فِي الدِّمَاغِ .

4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Shamiy from al-Husayn ibn Hanzalah who has said the following: “One of the two Imam, (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah), ‘Alayhim al-Salam, has said, ‘Gourd, squash increases al-Damagh (abilities of the brain).”’

Ḥadīth 5

عَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ الدُّبَّاءُ يَزِيدُ فِي الْعَقْلِ .

5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan (a.s.), saying, ‘Squash, gourd increases power of reason.’”

Ḥadīth 6

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ السَّيَّارِيِّ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يُعْجِبُهُ الدُّبَّاءُ وَ كَانَ يَأْمُرُ نِسَاءَهُ إِذَا طَبَخْنَ قِدْراً يُكْثِرْنَ مِنَ الدُّبَّاءِ وَ هُوَ الْقَرْعُ .

6. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from al-Sayyariy in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, liked gourd and would order his wives to increase gourd when they cooked a dish. It is squash.”

Ḥadīth 7

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ مُوسَى ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ فِيمَا أَوْصَى بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَلِيّاً ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَهُ يَا عَلِيُّ عَلَيْكَ بِالدُّبَّاءِ فَكُلْهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَزِيدُ فِي الدِّمَاغِ وَ الْعَقْلِ .

7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan, Musa (a.s.), has stated this Hadith. ‘Of the things about which the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, recommended Ali (a.s.), was his saying, ‘O Ali, you must eat gourd, squash; it increases, al-Damagh, the abilities of the brain and the power of reason.’”
