Another Chapter on the above Subject in an Emergency
3 Aḥadīth

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الذَّبِيحَةِ بِغَيْرِ حَدِيدَةٍ قَالَ إِذَا اضْطُرِرْتَ إِلَيْهَا فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدْ حَدِيدَةً فَاذْبَحْهَا بِحَجَرٍ .


1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Aban from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “About the case of slaughtering without iron, abu Ja’far (a.s), has said, ‘In an emergency when you cannot find iron you can slaughter with stone.”’

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْمَرْوَةِ وَ الْقَصَبَةِ وَ الْعُودِ أَ يُذْبَحُ بِهِنَّ إِذَا لَمْ يَجِدُوا سِكِّيناً قَالَ إِذَا فَرَى الْأَوْدَاجَ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِكَ .


2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Um ay r from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ibrahim (a.s), if slaughtering with stone, sharp reeds, and wood when a knife cannot be found is acceptable. He (the Imam) said, ‘If they can cut the jugular veins it is not unlawful.’” Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajj aj from abu Ibrahim (a.s), a similar Hadith.

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ أَبِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ ( عليه السلام ) مِثْلَهُ .مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِحَضْرَتِهِ سِكِّينٌ أَ يَذْبَحُ بِقَصَبَةٍ فَقَالَ اذْبَحْ بِالْقَصَبَةِ وَ بِالْحَجَرِ وَ بِالْعَظْمِ وَ بِالْعُودِ إِذَا لَمْ تُصِبِ الْحَدِيدَةَ إِذَا قَطَعَ الْحُلْقُومَ وَ خَرَجَ الدَّمُ فَلَا بَأْسَ .


3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about the case of a man who does not have a knife; if he can slaughter with a piece of reed. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use reeds, stones, bones or wood for slaughtering when you cannot find iron, if such things cut the throat and blood comes out; then it is not unlawful.’”
