He (Imam Ali (a.s)) said: 'Yes.' He {Prophet (saws) said: 'Did you memorize it?' He (Imam Ali (a.s)) said: 'Yes.' He {Prophet (saws) said: 'Call Bilal and teach him.' So (Imam) Ali (a.s), peace be upon him, called Bilal and taught him."

Hadith 3

Imam (a.s) said: "The Adhan is not correct, and it is not permissible for anyone to perform it except a Muslim man who is knowledgeable. So if he knows the Adhan and performs it but is not knowledgeable, his Adhan and Iqamah are not sufficient, and he is not to be followed." And Imam (a.s) was asked about a man who gives the Adhan and the Iqamah to pray alone, then another man comes and says to him, 'Will you pray in congregation?' Is it permissible for them to pray with that Adhan and Iqamah? Imam (a.s) said: "No, but he must give a new Adhan and Iqamah."

What should I do?” Imam (a.s) said: "Fall silent in the place of your recitation and say, 'Qad qamati al-salah, qad qamati al-salah' (The prayer has been established, the prayer has been established), then continue in your recitation and your prayer, and your prayer will be complete."

Hadith 7

Imam (a.s) said: "If he remembers that he did not give the Iqamah before he recites, then he should send blessings upon the Prophet (may Allah (swt) bless him and his family), then give the Iqamah and pray. But if he remembers after he has recited part of the Surah, then he should complete his prayer."

Commentary 1

Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan said: “All these narrations are to be understood as recommending (the act) out of desirability, because once he begins the prayer, the principle is that it is permissible for him to proceed in it and it is not obligatory upon him to break it off.” What clarifies what we have mentioned is what has been narrated:

Hadith 8

Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Mahbub from Salamah ibn Al-Khattab from Ibn Jabalah from Ibn Bukayr from Zurarah from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: I said to Him (a.s): “A man forgets the Adhan and the Iqamah until he has said the Takbir.” Imam (a.s) said: "He should proceed with his prayer and not repeat it."

Hadith 9

From him, from Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn, from Ja'far ibn Bashir, from Nu'man Al-Razi who said: I heard Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, and Abu Ubaydah Al-Hadhdha’ asked him about the narration of a man who forgot to give the Adhan and the Iqamah until he said the Takbir and entered into the prayer. Imam (a.s) said: "If he entered the mosque with the intention to give the Adhan and the Iqamah, then he should proceed with his prayer and not break it off."

Hadith 10

Al-Husayn ibn Sa'id from Muhammad ibn Al-Fudayl from Abu Al-Sabbah from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: I asked Him (a.s) about a man who forgot the Adhan until he completed the prayer. Imam (a.s) said: "He does not repeat (the prayer)."

Hadith 11

Should he repeat his prayer? Imam (a.s) said: "He does not repeat it, and he should not return to do the like of it again."

Hadith 12

As for what was narrated by Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Yaqtin from his brother Al-Husayn from Ali ibn Yaqtin, who said: I asked Abu Al-Hasan (a.s), peace be upon him, about a man who forgets to give the Iqamah and has already begun the prayer. Imam (a.s) said: "If he has completed his prayer, then his prayer is complete; but if he has not completed his prayer, then he must repeat it."

Commentary 2

Muhammad ibn Al-Hasan said: “And this narration as well is to be understood as recommending (the act) out of desirability, based on the indication of the narrations we have presented earlier.”

Hadith 13

Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Mahbub from Ya'qub from Abu Hammam: Abu Al-Hasan (a.s), peace be upon him, said: "The Adhan and the Iqamah are to be said twice, twice." And Imam (a.s) said: "If he gives the Iqamah twice, twice, and does not give the Adhan, it suffices for him in the obligatory prayer. But whoever gives the Iqamah once, once, and does not give the Adhan, it does not suffice for him except with an Adhan."

Hadith 14

From him, from Al-Abbas ibn Ma'ruf, from Abdullah ibn Al-Mughira, from Ibn Sinan: Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, said: "If a Mu'adhdhin gives the Adhan and he leaves something out of the Adhan, and you wish to pray with his Adhan, then complete what he left out from his Adhan, and there is no problem if a boy who has not yet reached puberty gives the Adhan."

Hadith 15

From him, from Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn, from Muhammad ibn Isma'il, from Salih ibn Uqbah, from Abu Maryam Al-Ansari who said: Abu Ja’far (a.s), peace be upon him, led us in prayer wearing only a shirt, without an izar (lower garment) and without a Ridha' (upper garment), and without Adhan and without Iqamah. When Imam (a.s) finished, I said to Him (a.s): “May Allah (swt) grant you wellbeing, you prayed with us in a shirt without an izar and without a Ridha', and without Adhan and without Iqamah”. Imam (a.s) said: "My shirt is thick, so it suffices that I do not have an izar or a Ridha', and I passed by Ja'far while he was giving the Adhan and the Iqamah, and I did not speak, so that sufficed for me."

Hadith 16

From him, from Ahmad ibn Al-Hasan, from Amr ibn Sa'id, from Musaddiq ibn Sadaqah, from Ammar Al-Sabati who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, or I heard Him (a.s) say: "If a man forgets a word from the Adhan until he begins the Iqamah, then he should continue with the Iqamah and there is nothing upon him. But if he forgets a word from the Iqamah, he must return to the word which he forgot," Then Imam (a.s) said, "from that place to the end of the Iqamah." (Imam (a.s) was asked) about a man who forgets to separate between the Adhan and the Iqamah with something until he begins the prayer or establishes the prayer. Imam (a.s) said: "There is nothing upon him, but he should not intentionally abandon that." Then Imam (a.s) was asked: “What suffices as Tasbih between the Adhan and the Iqamah?” Imam (a.s) said: "He should say: Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah (swt))."

Hadith 17

Imam (a.s) then said: "When you give the Iqamah for prayer, give it calmly, for you are in the prayer." I asked: “I had asked you if I could give the Iqamah while walking, and you said yes. So is it permissible for me to walk during the prayer?” Imam (a.s) said: "Yes, if you enter through the door of the mosque and you say the Takbir while following a just Imam, then walk to the prayer, that suffices for you. And if the Imam (of prayer) has already said the Takbir for Ruku', you will catch up with him in the rak'ah, because if you find him while he is bowing and you did not catch the Takbir with him, then you would not have caught the Ruku' with him."
