A throng of our companions have narrated to me, saying that Abū’l-Ḥusayn ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Qaṣbānī al-Baghdādī narrated to him among others, saying that Abū ʿĪsā ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Faḍl b. Hilāl—who was known to the Egyptians as “Shayṭān al-Ṭāq” because of his belief (rh)—narrated to him among others, saying that ʿAbd Allāh b. Mujrā al-Balawī narrated to him among others, saying that Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAlāʾ al-Madanī narrated to him among others, saying that Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn and a throng of our companions narrated to him, who said that Abū’l-Ḥusayn ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar al-Qaṣbānī narrated to them, saying that Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥusayn b. Wasīf al-ʿAdl narrated to him among others, who said that ʿAlī b. Yaʿqūb narrated to him among others, who said that ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Maḥfūẓ b. al-Mubārak al-Anṣārī al-Balawī narrated to him among others, who said that Ibrāhīm b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ al-Madanī narrated to him among others, who said that Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn narrated to him, and also he said that Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Ḥamza al-ʿAlawī (ra) narrated to him among others, who said that Abū Ghānim Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥārithī narrated to him among others, in Mecca, who said that Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī narrated to him among others, who said that Ibrāhīm b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to him among others, as did Ḥamza b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Zayd b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. They said that Abū’l-Ḥusayn Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Daynūrī informed them, saying that Yaʿqūb b. Nuʿaym b. Qarqara narrated to him among others, saying that Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Sabīʿī narrated to him among others, in Medina, from his father, from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ, who said that Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm narrated to him, and that Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Qulawayh narrated to him among others, saying that Abū ʿĪsā ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad b. Hilāl al-Ṭāʾī narrated to him among others, saying that Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī narrated to him among others, saying that Ibrāhīm b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to him among others, saying that Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm narrated to him. She said: “When Abū’l-Dawānīq murdered ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn after having murdered his two sons Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm…” And al-Sharīf Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Isḥāq b. al-Ḥusayn b. Isḥāq b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib narrated to us, saying that Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Ḥamza b. al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd al-Madanī narrated to him among others, saying that his father narrated to him, who said that Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Balawī narrated to him, saying that Ibrāhīm b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to him among others, saying that Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn narrated to him. She has said: “When Abū’l-Dawānīq murdered ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn after having murdered his two sons Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm, he carried my son, Dāwūd b. al-Ḥusayn, from Medina to Iraq bound in irons along with the sons of his uncle from among the descendants of al-Ḥasan [al-Mujtabā]. Hence he had disappeared from me for some time, being there imprisoned, and all news of him had been cut off, and his whereabouts obscured. I had supplicated to Allāh and pleaded to Him, asking Him sincerely, and sought assistance from my brothers—who were among the worshipful, ascetics and people of diligence and effort—to supplicate to Allāh for my sake that my son and I may be reunited before my death. They did thus, without any shortcoming on their part, while rumour reached me that Dāwūd had been murdered. Others rejected that news and insisted that he had been walled up inside a cylinder with his cousins. My calamity thus became greater and my depression severer, and I did not see how my supplication would be answered or my issue would be resolved successfully. Thus, my bones became frail, my years increased and I became fed up to the point of losing hope that I would reunite with my child due to my weakness and the passing of my life.” Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn continued: “Then I entered upon Abū ʿAbd Allāh, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (as), and he was ill. I asked him about his condition, and supplicated for him, and I was about to leave when he said: “O’ Umm Dāwūd, what has reached you (of news) about Dāwūd?”—and I had nursed Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad with the same milk with which I had nursed Dāwūd, so when he mentioned him I wept and said: “May I be sacrificed for your sake! Where is Dāwūd? He is (seeming to me) lost in Iraq, and I am totally cut off from any news of his whereabouts, having despaired of meeting him again, even though I still fervently seek to see him and yearn for him greatly, so I ask you to pray for him, for he is your milk brother.” Umm Dāwūd, Fāṭima bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥusayn, continued to narrate: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (as) said to me: “O’ Umm Dāwūd, where are you with the supplication of openings, answers and success? [1] For it is the supplication by which Allāh (azwj) opens up the skies for the supplicant and the angels receive him with the glad tidings of a worthy answer (to his supplication). It is the answered supplication which is never hidden from Allāh (azwj), and what accompanies it with Allāh (twt) merits no reward less than Paradise.” Umm Dāwūd continues to narrate: “I said: “And how is that for me, o’ son of the pure, truthful ones?,” so Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad replied: “O’ Umm Dāwūd, indeed one of the sacred months is near”—and by this he (as) meant the month of Rajab—“and it is a blessed and exalted month of immense sanctity in which supplications are heard. Thus, I implore you to fast of it three days—the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth—for these are the white days. On the 15th day—the middle one—perform the ritual bath (ghusl) at noontime and thereby perform eight units of prayer with attention and care, ennobling thereby each unit, prostration and supplication. In the first unit, recite the Opening Chapter of the Book (i.e. Sūrat al-Fātiḥa) and then ﴾Say, “O’ disbelievers,”﴿, and in the second unit ﴾Say, “He is Allāh, Who is One,”﴿, and then in the remaining six units recite whichever short chapters you prefer. Then perform the Ẓuhr prayer—thereafter perform eight more units with attention and care, ennobling thereby each unit, prostration and supplication. May you conduct your prayer in the most immaculate clothing and in a clean house, on a clean mat, and use perfume, for the angels love it. Put in effort to ensure that no-one enters upon you to distract you with their speech or actions”—the rest which we have not written down here has been mentioned in the book ʿAmal al-Sunna, [2] so whoever wishes to record it, let him do so from ʿAmal al-Sunna—“when you cease supplicating, prostrate on the ground, placing your cheeks on the ground and say: “To You I have prostrated and in You I have believed, so have mercy on me in my humiliation, my need, and the abasement of my face.” Make an effort to weep from your eyes, even if your tears are as small as the head of a fly, for this is the sign of the acceptance of this supplication—the burning of the heart and the shedding of tears. So, memorise what I teach you and beware that this supplication exit from your possession and come into the hands of another who supplicates using it without any right, for it is a noble prayer that contains the Greatest Name of Allāh which, if used, ensures that the supplication is answered and given—even if the heavens and the earth were closed off and all (the water of) the seas pooled together other than that and thereafter altogether stood between yourself and your need, Allāh (azwj) would make easy a way to that which you desire, and fulfil your request, judge well on your need, and validate your hopes. Every person who supplicates with this supplication will receive an answer from Allāh (taa), be they male or female. Even if the totality of mankind and the jinn were to unite as enemies of your child, Allāh would suffice for you against their provisions, silence their tongues against you and bend their necks low against you, if Allāh wills.” Umm Dāwūd continued to narrate: “He wrote for me this supplication and I returned to my residence wherein the month of Rajab arrived, so I observed the days by fasting and supplicating—as I was commanded—and at the end (of each day) I performed the Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ prayers, then broke my fast and then I performed the supererogatory night prayers of what was easy for me, arranged as I had my night. In my sleep (i.e. dream), I saw—as I had prayed for—the angels, the Prophets, the martyrs and the worshipful ones. I also saw the Holy Prophet (sawa), whereupon he said to me: “O’ daughter, o’ Umm Dāwūd, I come to you with good tidings, for every one of whom you have seen are your helpers, your brothers, and intercessors, and every one of them prays for your forgiveness and gives you the glad tidings of the successful fulfilment of your wish. I personally give you the glad tidings of forgiveness from Allāh and His satisfaction—rejoice in the goodness you have been rewarded with. I bear you glad tidings that Allāh has kept your son alive and will return him to you, if Allāh wills.” Umm Dāwūd continued to narrate: “I woke up from my sleep, and by Allāh, only a measure of time equivalent to the quick journey of a rider on the road from Iraq had passed when Dāwūd appeared before me and said: “O’ my mother, indeed I have been imprisoned in Iraq in the most claustrophobic kind of imprisonment, laden with heavy irons. I was in the condition of Ilyās (i.e. despair) concerning release when, on the night of the 15th of Rajab, I slept and dreamt that I saw the whole world. It had been lowered for me until I noticed you, praying on a mat, surrounded by men whose heads were in the sky and whose feet planted firmly on the ground, robed in green, glorifying Allāh around you. One of them spoke up, whose face was as beautiful and sweet as that of the Holy Prophet (sawa), whose robes were clean and whose scent was sublime, and excellent was his speech, whereupon he said: “O’ son of the righteous woman, rejoice in glad tidings, for Allāh (azwj) has answered your mother’s supplication!” It was thus that I woke up and a messenger of Abī’l-Dawānīq took me to see him during the night. He ordered my irons removed and had me treated with kindness, gave me ten thousand dirhams and freed me, having me carried on a camel that travelled at the most notable speed. Thus, I hastened until I entered Medina.” Umm Dāwūd narrates: “Immediately I took him to see Abī ʿAbd Allāh, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (as), so he greeted Dāwūd with greetings of peace, and had a pleasant conversation with him, until he—al-Ṣādiq—told Dāwūd: “Indeed, Abāʿl-Dawānīq saw ʿAlī (as) in a dream, who said to him: “Release my descendant, or I will cast you into the Fire!” Abū’l-Dawānīq then saw that there were fires blazing beneath his feet (in the dream). He woke up in a fit of helpless terror, so he let you go.”

Whoever fasts three days of Rajab at the month’s beginning, three days in its middle, and three at its end, will have what he brought forth of his sins forgiven, as well as what he has kept back. Whoever stays awake (engaged in prayer) during one of the nights of Rajab will receive his freedom from the Fire from Allāh, and his intercession for seventy thousand sinners is accepted. Whoever gives charity in the form of ṣadaqa in the month of Rajab seeking the Face (i.e. satisfaction) of Allāh, will be honoured by Allāh on the Day of Judgement in Paradise with a reward that no eyes have seen, nor any ear heard, nor any human intellect has grasped.”

Muḥammad (as), ascetic and impeccable, worshipful and pious, and when I intended (to invite) him (to meet with me), he would graciously accept. One day, I asked him: “O’ son of the Messenger of Allāh, what is the reward for one who fasts a day of the month of Rajab, faithfully and having taken account?” He said—and by Allāh, when he spoke he was truthful: “My father narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, who has stated that the Messenger of Allāh (sawa) said: “Whoever fasts a day of the month of Rajab, faithfully and having taken account, will be forgiven.” I then asked him: “O’ son of the Messenger of Allāh, what is the reward for one who fasts a day of the month of Shaʿbān, faithfully and having taken account?,” so Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad replied: “My father narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, who has stated that the Messenger of Allāh (sawa) said: “Whoever fasts a day of the month of Shaʿbān, faithfully and having taken account, will be forgiven.”

Whoever fasts eight days of Rajab will have all eight doors of Paradise opened for him. Whoever fasts fifteen days of Rajab will have Allāh (azwj) grant him every wish of his except that which involves sin or cutting ties with one’s kin. Whoever fasts the whole month of Rajab will be absolved from his sins as if he were as innocent as on the day his mother birthed him, and he will be freed from the Fire and admitted into Heaven to reside therein with the chosen, selected few.”
