Ḥadīth 1

Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā b. Bābuwayh (ra) informed us, saying that Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq al-Ṭāliqānī narrated to him among others, saying that Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Kūfī al-Hamadānī, the client of Banī Hāshim, narrated to him among others, saying that ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Faḍḍāl narrated to him among others, from his father, from Abī’l-Ḥasan, ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā (as), who said: “Whoever fasts the first day of Rajab, seeking the reward of Allāh (azwj), will have admission into Paradise mandated upon him, and whoever fasts a day in the middle of the month will be allowed to intercede for the likes of Rabīʿa and Muḍar, and whoever fasts at its end will be made one of the kings of Paradise by Allāh, and he will be allowed to intercede for his father, his mother, his son, his daughter, his brother, his paternal uncle and aunt, and his maternal uncle and aunt, and his acquaintances, and his neighbours, even if Perdition has been mandated upon them.”

Ḥadīth 2

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. Khālid al-Balkhī narrated to us, saying that ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Durustuwayh al-Fārisī narrated to him among others, saying that Ḥammād b. Abī Sulaymān narrated to him among others, from Anas b. Mālik, who reported that he heard the Holy Prophet (sawa) saying: “Whoever fasts a day of the month of Rajab faithfully and seeking the reward thereof, Allāh (twt) will make between him and Perdition seventy trenches, every trench being as vast as the distance between the sky and the earth.”

Ḥadīth 3

Sālim, from his father, who reported: “I entered upon al-Ṣādiq, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (as-d), in Rajab at a time when some days yet remained of this month. When the Imam noticed me, he asked me: “O’ Sālim, have you fasted any part of this month?” to which I responded: “No, by Allāh, o’ son of the Messenger of Allāh (sawa)!” He then said: “Indeed, you have missed out on a reward whose extent none know but Allāh (azwj), for Allāh has favoured this month, exalted its sanctity, and mandated its nobility upon those who fast during it.” Sālim reported that he then asked the Imam: “O’ son of the Messenger of Allāh, were I to fast any part of what remains of this month, would I avail myself of the reward due to those who devotedly fast during it?” Imam al-Ṣādiq said: “O’ Sālim, whoever fasts a day in the last part of this month will have it serve as a means of security for him from the severity of the pangs of death, the horror of the first sight, and the punishment of the grave. Whoever fasts two days in the last part of this month, it will be a means of passage for him on the Bridge (to Paradise). Whoever fasts three days in the last part of this month, it will be a means of security for him from the horrors and scourges of the Day of the Great Panic, and he will be granted freedom from the Fire.”

Whoever fasts two days of Rajab, it will be said to him: “Start anew, for you have been forgiven for whatever has passed!,” and whoever fasts three days of Rajab, it will be said to him: “You have been forgiven for whatever has passed, and as for what remains, you may intercede for whomever you will, of the sinners from among your brothers and acquaintances [your forgiveness].” Whoever fasts seven days of Rajab will have the seven doors of Hellfire closed to him, and whoever fasts eight days of Rajab will have the eight doors of Heaven opened to him so that he may enter through whichever he wills.”

Ḥadīth 7

My father narrated to us, saying that Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to him, saying that Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn—b. al-Ṣaqar, or he narrated from al-Ṣaqar—from Abī’l-Ṭāhir Muḥammad b. Ḥamza b. al-Yasʿa, from al-Ḥasan b. Bakkār al-Ṣayqal, from Abī’l-Ḥasan al-Riḍā (as): “Allāh raised Muḥammad up (as the Holy Prophet) when three nights had yet passed of the month of Rajab, so whoever fasts on that day will have done so as if he had fasted for seventy years.” Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh has noted: “Our elders say: “Indeed, that is an error in the transcription, for the correct wording is “three nights had yet remained of the month of Rajab.”

Ḥadīth 8

Whoever fasts for seven days, the seven doors of the fires of Hell will be shut to him, and whoever fasts for eight days, the eight gates of Heaven will be opened for him. Whoever fasts fifteen days, he will be given whatever he asks for, and whoever fasts more than that, then Allāh will increase his reward accordingly.”

Ḥadīth 10

Whoever fasts a day of Rajab, Allāh will grant him to drink from that river.”

Ḥadīth 11

And with this chain of transmission, he said that Abū’l-Ḥasan (as) has stated: “Rajab is a great month, wherein Allāh doubles that which is good and erases that which is evil, and whoever fasts a day of Rajab will have Perdition distanced from him by the measure of a year’s journey, and whoever fasts three days, Paradise is mandated upon him.”

Ḥadīth 12

Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Aḥmad al-Laythī narrated to us, saying that Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Azdī narrated to him among others, saying that Abū’l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Muqarrī narrated to him among others, saying that al-Ḥasan b. al-Marwazī narrated to him among others, from his father, from Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbās, from ʿAlī b. ʿĀṣim, who said that Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī narrated to him among others, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who reported that the Messenger of Allāh (sawa) said: “Undoubtedly, the month of Rajab is the silent month of Allāh, and it is a great month. Its name is only “silent” because none may compare it to any other of the months with Allāh (azwj) in terms of its sanctity and excellence, and the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance would respect it, despite their ignorance. Then, when Islam came, it did not increase the month of Rajab except in its greatness and excellence. Undoubtedly, Rajab is the month of Allāh, while Shaʿbān is my month, and the month of Ramaḍān is the month of my community. Undoubtedly, he who fasts one day of Rajab with faith and having reckoned (its reward), the greater satisfaction of Allāh is mandated upon him, and the wrath of Allāh (azwj) is drawn away from him on that day, and one of Perdition’s gates is shut to him. Had the elites of the earth been given all its gold, all of that wealth would not outshine his singular fast in its excellence, nor can anything of the worldly life, other than the Divine blessings, completely match the reward of his singular fast if he does it sincerely for the sake of Allāh (azwj). And for him is that when he breaks his fast, his supplications are answered. Were he to ask for something in this worldly life, Allāh would give it to him, even though it would be more excellent for his sake that what goodness he has received is saved (for the Hereafter), as is true for all of the friends, beloved and chosen ones of Allāh. Whoever fasts two days of Rajab will have a reward and honour with Allāh that cannot be captured in description by those of the people of the heavens and the earth who are wont to describe. Inscribed for him shall be a reward like that of ten truthful ones who, in the lengths of their respective lives reached what they reached, and he will be allowed to intercede on the Day of Judgement just as they have been allowed to intercede, and this person will be gathered as one of the group of these truthful ones therein until they are admitted into Paradise altogether, and he will be of their close friends. Whoever fasts three days of Rajab, Allāh will construct between him and the Fire a ditch or veil whose extent reaches (the requirement of) seventy years’ travel (to cross it). Allāh (azwj) will also say to him when he breaks his fast: “I have mandated against Myself your right and made obligatory love and guardianship for you. Bear witness, o’ angels of Mine, that I have forgiven what this person has put forward of sins and what he has kept back.” Whoever fasts four days of Rajab will be protected from all calamities, like insanity, leprosy, vitiligo and the trials of the Dajjāl. He will be safeguarded from the punishment of the grave and given the reward of those with understanding and the repentant penitents. His book of deeds will be given to him in his right hand, for he is of the foremost of the devoutly worshipful. Whoever fasts five days of Rajab, there would be for him upon Allāh (azwj) a right that He be pleased with him on the Day of Resurrection, and that on that Day He raise him as if his face were shining like the Moon on the night when it is full, and that good deeds are recorded for him like the number of sand grains. He will be admitted into Paradise, without any accountability, and it will be said to him: “Ask of your Lord whatever you will.” Whoever fasts six days of Rajab will be taken out of his grave with his face filled with a white light shining brighter than the Sun, and he will be given besides that a light with which he will illuminate the gathering of people on the Day of Reckoning. He will be resurrected as one of the secure ones such that when he crosses the Bridge he will do so without any accountability, excused of his disobedience to his parents and his cutting of family ties. Whoever fasts seven days of Rajab—indeed, there are seven gates to Perdition—and for each day of fasting Allāh will have one gate shut to the one who does it, and Allāh will forbid his body from suffering the Fire. As for whoever fasts eight days of Rajab—indeed, there are eight gates to Paradise—and for each day of fasting one of those gates will be opened to the one who fasted, and it will be said to him: “Enter the Heavens from whichever of its gates you will.” Whoever fasts nine days of Rajab will be resurrected from out of his grave chanting “There is no god but Allāh” and his face will not be turned away from Paradise. He will be resurrected out of his grave with a face shining with light that fills the throng (on the Day of Judgement) such that they say that this man is the Chosen Prophet (i.e. Muḥammad). The least of what he will be given is to enter Paradise without accountability. Whoever fasts ten days of Rajab will have green wings adorned with pearls and rubies made for him by Allāh (azwj) with which he will fly over the Bridge and into Paradise like a lightning flash. Allāh will transform his misdeeds into good deeds, and inscribe for him that he is of the upstanding proximate ones to Allāh in justice, as if he had been a servant of Allāh (azwj) for a thousand years, upstanding, patient and seeking Divine reward. Whoever fasts eleven days of Rajab shall not meet a nobler reward from his Lord on the Day of Reckoning except by virtue of somebody else fasting as much as him or more. Whoever fasts twelve days of Rajab will be clothed on the Day of Resurrection in two garments of green silk and brocade which, if they were to be hung from the sky, would extend until they reached the earth and filled it with radiance between the East and the West, and the world will be filled with a fragrance fairer than that of musk. Whoever fasts thirteen days of Rajab will—on the Day of Judgement—be presented with a table made of green sapphires in the shadow of the Throne, with legs made of pearl, wider than seventy times the size of the Earth. Dishes made of pearl and ruby will be set upon it, each dish containing seventy thousand colours of food, no colour or fragrance being the same as another. The one who performs these thirteen fasts will eat at this table just as the people are in the severest of torments and the greatest of calamities. Whoever fasts fourteen days of Rajab will be given a reward by Allāh—that no eye has seen, nor any ear heard, nor any heart envisioned—of palaces in the Paradisiacal realms built therein of rubies and pearls. Whoever fasts fifteen days of Rajab will be given a position of safety on the Day of Reckoning whereby no angel, prophet or messenger will pass except that he will utter: “Good tidings to you! You are safe, and honoured, proximate to Allāh, benedict, delighted, a resident of Paradise!” Whoever fasts sixteen days of Rajab will be of the first to ride great beasts made of light to fly upon from the fields of Paradise to the Abode of the Most Merciful. Whoever fasts seventeen days of Rajab will have seventy thousand lamps made of pure light set up for him on the Bridge on the Day of Judgement, such that when he crosses the Bridge he will do so guided by the light of those lamps to the Paradisiacal realms, followed by angels welcoming him with tidings of peace. Whoever fasts eighteen days of Rajab will sit with (our forefather) Ibrāhīm in the Eternal Paradise, reclining on couches of pearl and ruby. Whoever fasts nineteen days of Rajab will have a palace of soft pearls built for him by Allāh opposite the palace of Ādam and Ibrāhīm in the Garden of Eden. He would greet Ādam and Ibrāhīm with tidings of peace and honour and they would reciprocate as is the faster’s right, and it will be written for him that every day he fasts will count as a thousand years of fasting each. Whoever fasts twenty days of Rajab it will be as if he had worshipped Allāh (azwj) for twenty thousand years. Whoever fasts twenty-one days of Rajab will be allowed to intercede for the likes of (the tribes of) Rabīʿa and Muḍar on the Day of Judgement, even though all of them are people of sin and transgression. Whoever fasts twenty-two days of Rajab will have an announcement made from the ether: “I bring glad tidings, o’ confidante of Allāh, of honour and exaltation from Allāh and the companionship of those whom Allāh has blessed from among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous, and how excellent are they as companions!” Whoever fasts twenty-three days of Rajab will also be called from the ether thus; “You are blessed, o’ servant of Allāh! Your share was but a little, yet your blessing is great! You are blessed, for when the veil is lifted from you and you behold the manner of the rewards of your Noble Lord, and you shall reside with the Confidante (of Allāh, i.e. Ibrāhīm) in the abode of peace!” Whoever fasts twenty-four days of Rajab will have the Angel of Death appear to him—when he descends upon the faster—in the form of a youth wearing a green silk robe, upon a steed from among the steeds of Heaven, holding a satchel of green silk filled with musk in one hand and a golden chalice filled with the drink of the Heavens. The faster alone will be made to drink from it as his soul is taken from him, and so he will be relieved from the pangs of death thereby. His spirit will be taken (back to Paradise) in that satchel whence a fragrance will be emitted, inhaled by the people of the seven skies. He will be laid to rest in his grave with ease, and resurrected from his grave with ease, until he reaches the basin of the Holy Prophet (sawa). Whoever fasts twenty-five days of Rajab will be greeted by seventy thousand angels, each of them grasping in their hands banners of pearl and sapphire, when he is resurrected from his grave, and with those angels are the most wonderful ornaments and jewellery. They will say to him: “O’ friend of Allāh, you have come to your Lord!,” so he will be first among the people to enter the Garden of Eden alongside the proximate ones to Allāh with whom He is pleased and they are pleased with Him, and that is the great attainment. Whoever fasts twenty-six days of Rajab will have constructed for him by Allāh in the shadow of the Throne a hundred palaces made of ruby and pearl, and at the summit of each palace a silk tent made of the silks of Paradise wherein he will reside with ease while the people are being held accountable for their deeds. Whoever fasts twenty-seven days of Rajab will have the space of his grave widened by Allāh to the extent of requiring 400,000 years of travel to cross it from one side to the other, and He will fill it all with the fragrance of musk and ambergris. Whoever fasts twenty-eight days of Rajab will have seven trenches constructed between himself and Hellfire by Allāh (azwj), and each trench is as wide as the distance between the Heavens and the Earth, taking a travel time of five hundred years to cross. Whoever fasts twenty-nine days of Rajab will be forgiven by Allāh even if he were a collector of excessive tax or a sinful woman who had sinned (of fornication) seventy times. However, since they had intended to seek the Face of Allāh (taa) sincerely (and completed good actions), He would forgive them and save them from Perdition. Whoever fasts thirty days of Rajab will receive an announcement from the ether as thus: “O’ servant of Allāh, all that has passed has been forgiven for you, so begin anew your deeds in what remains!,” so Allāh will give him in each of the Paradisiacal realms forty cities, and in each city forty million palaces, and in each palace forty million houses, and in each house forty million tables made of solid gold, and on each table forty million dishes, and in each dish forty million kinds of food and drink, and each kind of food and each drink has its own vibrant flavour. In each of those aforementioned houses are forty thousand beds made of solid gold, the extent of which is a thousand cubits squared, and upon each bed lying is one of the celestial maidens (ḥūr al-ʿayn) wearing 300,000 locks made of light, each lock carried by a billion maidservants who will inundate her in the fragrance of musk and ambergris while she waits for the one who fasted in Rajab. Such is the reward, for one who fasts the entirety of the month of Rajab!” It was said to him: “O’ Prophet of Allāh, what if someone is prevented from fasting in Rajab because of weakness or illness or because they are a woman who is impure (as a result of menstruation)? How can they attain what you have described?,” to which the Messenger of Allāh replied: “Then they should provide a loaf of bread to the poor for every day (of Rajab that they do not fast). By the One in Whose hand is my soul, were they to be charitable in this way they will have achieved what I described and more. Even if all the creatures of the people of the heavens and the earth were to assemble in a concerted effort to measure the extent of this person’s Divine reward, they would not estimate so much as a tenth of what he has achieved in Heaven in terms of virtue and ranks of excellence.” It was then said: “O’ Messenger of Allāh (sawa), what if someone is unable to give charity—how can they achieve what you have described?,” so he replied: “He should glorify Allāh (azwj) every day of Rajab until he does it for the whole 30 days of the month, with the following glorification: “Glory be to the Majestic Deity. Glory be to He Who alone deserves glorification. Glory be to the Greatest and the Noblest. Glory be to He Who is accoutred in Greatness, and to Him it belongs.”

Ḥadīth 13

Al-Muẓaffar b. Jaʿfar b. al-Muẓaffar al-ʿAlawī al-Samarqandī narrated to us, saying that Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Masʿud al-ʿAyyāshī narrated to him among others, from his father, saying that al-Ḥusayn b. Ishkīb narrated to him among others, from Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Kūfī, from Abī Jamīla al-Mufaḍḍal b. Ṣāliḥ, from Abī Ramḥa al-Ḥaḍramī, who said: “I heard Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣādiq (as) saying: ‘On the Day of Judgement, a call will be issued from within the Throne (saying as thus): “Where are the people of Rajab?,” so a group of people will stand up whose faces are shining for the throng assembled, wearing pearl and ruby-crusted crowns of kingship. Each of them will be accompanied by a thousand angels on their left and a thousand on their right, all saying: “Congratulations, o’ servant of Allāh, for the grace of Allāh (azwj) has been bestowed upon you!” Then Allāh (jj) Himself will call to them: “O’ my servants and my maidservants, by My Majesty and Splendour, I have honoured your resting place and generously endow what I have given you, for you all will be granted, in Heaven, ﴾chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the righteous workers﴿ [29:58] for you obeyed Me in fasting in a month the sanctity of which is exalted and the right of which has been mandated. My angels will admit my servants and maidservants into Paradise.” The Imam, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad (as), then said: "This is for those who fasted anything of the month of Rajab, whether it be in the beginning of the month, its middle, or its end.”
