ومن كلام له (عليه السلام) لمّا أشير عليه بألاّ يتبع طلحةَ والزبيرَ ولا يُرصدَ لهما القتال [وفيه يبين عن صفته بأنه (عليه السلام) لا يخدع]

Delivered on being advised not to chase Ṭalḥah ibn ‘Ubaydillih and az-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwām for fighting. [1]

وَاللهِ لاَ أَكُونُ كالضَّبُعِ: تَنَامُ عَلى طُولِ اللَّدْمِ، حَتَّى يَصِلَ إِلَيْهَا طَالِبُهَا،وَيَخْتِلَهَا رَاصِدُها، وَلكِنِّي أَضْرِبُ بِالمُقْبِلِ إِلَى الحَقِّ المُدْبِرَ عَنْهُ، وَبِالسَّامِعِ المُطِيعِ العَاصِيَ المُريبَ أَبَداً، حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ عَلَيَّ يَوْمِي. فَوَاللهِ مَا زِلتُ مَدْفُوعاً عَنْ حَقِّي، مُسْتَأْثَراً عَلَيَّ، مُنْذُ قَبَضَ اللهُ تعالى نَبِيَّهُ (صلى الله عليه وآله) حَتَّى يَوْمِ النَّاسِ هذَا.

By Allāh I shall not be like the badger, which feigns sleep on continuous (sound of) stone-throwing till he who is in search of it find it or he who is on the look out for it overpowers it. Rather, I shall ever strike the deviators from truth with the help of those who advance towards it, and the sinners and doubters with the help of those who listen to me and obey, till my day (of death) comes. By Allāh I have been continually deprived of my right from the day the Prophet died till today.

Extrait de ses paroles lorsqu’il fut conseillé de ne pas poursuivre Talhat et Zoubaïr pour leur livrer bataille. Il démontre par ses paroles qu’il n’est le dupe de personne.

Je jure par Dieu que je ne me conduirai pas comme une hyène qui dort au battement d’une pierre ou d’une canne jusqu’à ce que celui qui intente l’attraper met la main dessus, mais je me sers de ceux qui soutiennent le droit pour frapper ceux qui s'en éloignent, et de ceux qui écoutent et obéissent pour frapper celui qui désobéit et doute toujours, et ce tant que je vivrai. Par Dieu, j’ai été écarté de mon droit par ceux qui s’en sont emparés à mon préjudice, depuis que Dieu a appelé son Prophète jusqu’à ce jour!
