ومن كلام له (عليه السلام) لمّا قبض رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله) وخاطبه العباس وأبوسفيان في أن يبايعا له بالخلافة (وذلك بعد أن تمّت البيعة لابي بكر في السقيفة، وفيها ينهى عن الفتنة ويبين عن خلقه وعلمه):

Delivered when the Holy Prophet died and ‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib and Abu Sufyān ibn Harb offered to pay allegiance to Amīr al-mu’minīn for the Caliphate

أَيُّها النَّاسُ، شُقُّوا أَمْوَاجَ الفِتَنِ بِسُفُنِ النَّجَاةِ، وَعَرِّجُوا عَنْ طَريقِ الـمُنَافَرَةِ، وَضَعُوا تِيجَانَ الـمُفَاخَرَةِ. أَفْلَحَ مَنْ نَهَضَ بِجَنَاح، أوِ اسْتَسْلَمَ فَأَراحَ، مَاءٌ آجِنٌ، وَلُقْمَةٌ يَغَصُّ بِهَا آكِلُهَا، وَمُجْتَنِي الَّثمَرَةِ لِغَيْرِ وَقْتِ إِينَاعِهَا كالزَّارعِ بِغَيْرِ أَرْضِهِ.

O People! [1] Steer clear through the waves of mischief by boats of deliverance, turn away from the path of dissension and put off the crowns of pride. Prosperous is one who rises with wings (i.e. when he has power) or else he remains peaceful and others enjoy ease. It (i.e. the aspiration for Caliphate) is like turbid water or like a morsel that would suffocate the person who swallows it. One who plucks fruits before ripening is like one who cultivated in another’s field.

فَإِنْ أقُلْ يَقُولُوا: حَرَصَ عَلَى الـمُلْكِ، وَإنْ أَسْكُتْ يَقُولُوا: جَزعَ مِنَ المَوْتِ! هَيْهَاتَ بَعْدَ اللَّتَيَّا وَالَّتِي! وَاللهِ لاَبْنُ أَبي طَالِب آنَسُ بالمَوْتِ مِنَ الطِّفْلِ بِثَدْي أُمِّهِ، بَلِ انْدَمَجْتُ عَلَى مَكْنُونِ عِلْم لَوْ بُحْتُ بِهِ لاَضْطَرَبْتُمُ اضْطِرَابَ الاْرْشِيَةِ في الطَّوِيِّ البَعِيدَةِ!

If I speak out they would call me greedy towards power but if I keep quiet they would say I was afraid of death. It is a pity that after all the ups and downs (I have been through). By Allāh the son of Abu Ṭalib [2] is more familiar with death than an infant with the breast of its mother. I have hidden knowledge; if I disclose it you will start trembling like ropes in deep wells.

Extrait d’un discours lorsque l’Envoyé de Dieu est mort, Al ‘Abbass et Àbou Soufian bin Harb demandant à ‘Ali s’il permet qu’ils le proclament calife (malgré que le califat a été acquis pour Abi Bakr dans la Sakifa (tente)). ‘Ali répond par ces mots où il interdit la sédition montrant qu’il a du plomb et de la science.

Ô gens! Fendez les vagues des séditions par les canots de sauvetage, éloignez-vous du chemin de la dispersion, écartez les couronnes de la vanité. Quiconque vole de ses propres ailes connaît la réussite ou se résigne paisiblement. Ceci [le califat] est une eau saumâtre et une bouchée qui fait suffoquer celui qui la mange. C’est comme si l’on cueille un fruit qui n’est pas encore mûr; c’est comme si l’on cultive une terre qui n’est pas la sienne.

Si je réclame, ils diront: il s’attache au règne; si je me tais ils diront: il a peur de mourir! Qu’il est loin de la vérité leur jugement! Par Dieu! Ibn Abi Taleb tient à la mort comme tient le bébé à la mamelle de sa mère. Je dirais plutôt que je détiens une science telle que si je vous livrais ses secrets vous trembleriez comme une corde jetée dans un puits profond!
