Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. al-Walid narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Abi’l Qasim narrated to us from Muhammad b. `Ali al-Qurashi from Muhammad b. Sinan from al-Mufaddal b. `Umar from Yunus b. Thibyan from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . He said: Musa b. `Imran was speaking to his Lord when he saw a man in the shade beneath the Throne of Allah. So, he said: O Lord! Who is this that is shaded by Your Throne? So, He said: He was good to his parents, and he would not spread gossip.

Ja`far b. `Ali b. al-Hasan b. `Ali b. `Abdullah b. al-Mughira al-Kufi narrated to us. He said: My grandfather al-Hasan b. `Ali narrated to me from his grandfather `Abdullah b. al-Mughira from Isma`il b. Muslim from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: I am astonished at he who avoids food in fear of disease – why does he not avoid sins in fear of Hell?!

Al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. Idris narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from Muhammad b Ahmad b Yahya b. `Imran al-Ash`ari from Muhammad b. `Ali rom `Isa b. `Abdullah al-`Alawi al-`Amri from his father from his forefathers from `Ali . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: O Allah, have mercy on my vicegerents (khulafa’i) – three times. It was said: O Messenger of Allah! Who are your vicegerents? He said: Those who convey my narrations and my Sunna, then teach them to my Nation.

`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah al-Barqi narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah from Muhammad b. `Ali al-Qurashi from Muhammad b. Sinan from `Abdullah b. Talha and Isma`il b. Jabir and `Amer b. Mehran from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . `Isa b. Maryam went forth to fulfill a need of his, and he had three of his companions with him. He passed by three bars of gold on the road. So, `Isa said to his companions: Surely, this kills people. Then, he continued walking. So, one of them said: I have a need. He said: So, he left. Then, another one said: I have a need. So, he left. Then, the last one said: I have a need. So, he left. The three of them had gone to the gold. Two of them said to one of them: Buy us food. So, he went to buy food for the two of them. He put poison in it so that he may kill them and not share the gold with them. The two said: When he comes, let us kill him so that we do not have to share with him. When he came, they went to him and killed him. Then, they ate, and they both died. So, `Isa returned to him, and they were dead around him. So, he resurrected them by the permission of Allah; then said: Did I not tell you that this kills people?!

Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. al-Husayn al-Sa`d Abadi narrated to us from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid from his father from Safwan b. Yahya from Muhammad b. Abi’l Hajhaz from `Ali b. al-Sirri. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq say: Surely, Allah put the sustenance of the believers in places that he does not expect. This is because, if a servant does not know where to find his sustenance, he increases in his supplications.

Ahmad b. `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from his father Ibrhaim b. Hashim from Hammad b. `Isa from al-Husayn b. al-Mukhtar from Abi Basir from Abi `Abdillah . He said: One silver coin [earned] in usury is more significant to Allah than fornicating thirty times with mahrams, like aunts and uncles.

`Ali b. Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Qazwini, known as Ibn Muqbara, narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Abdullah al-Hadrami narrated to us. He said: Jundal b. Waliq narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Umar al-Mazini narrated to us from `Ibad al-Kulaybi from Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from `Ali b. al-Hasan from Fatima al-Sughra from al-Husayn b. `Ali from his mother Fatima bt. Muhammad (s). She said: The Messenger of Allah (s) came out to us on the eve of `Arafat and said: Surely, Allah has dignified and forgiven you all in general, and `Ali in particular. Surely, I am the Messenger of Allah to you rather than [just] a lover of my relatives. Gabriel here informs me that all true happiness is for one who loves `Ali in his life and after his death, and that all true wretchedness is for one who hates `Ali in his life and after his passing.

Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Abu Sa`id al-Sakri narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Zakariyya informed us. He said: al-`Abbas b. Bakkar narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. al-Muthanna narrated to us from his uncle Thumama b. `Abdullah from Anas b. Malik from his mother. She said: Fatima did not see blood during menstruation nor in delivery.

Ahmad b. Ziyad al-Hamadani narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to me from his father from Isma`il b. Mehran from Darast b. Abi Mansur from `Isa b. Bashir from Abi Hamza from Abi Ja`far . He said: When death came to `Ali b. al-Husayn , he took me to his chest, then said: O my son! I will advise you of what my father advised me of when death came to him, and what he mentioned his father advised him of. He said: “O my son! Beware of oppressing one who has no supporter against you except Allah.”

Al-Husayn b. Ibrahim b. Natana narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim from Muhammad b. Abi `Umayr from Yahya b. `Imran al-Halabi from al-Harith b. al-Mughira al-Nasri. He said: I heard Aba `Abdillah al-Sadiq say: Whoever says subhanallah, alhamdulillah, la ilaha illallah and Allahu akbar forty times after every obligatory prayer before moving his feet, then asks Allah [for something], Allah will give him what he asked for.

Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Hamdan al-Mukattab narrated to us. He said: Abu `Abdullah Muhammad b. `Abd al-Rahman al-Saffar narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. `Isa al-Damaghani. He said: Yahya b. al-Mughira narrated to us. He said: Jarir narrated to us from al-A`mash from `Atiyya from Abi Sa`id al-Khudri. He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) said: On the night that I was taken to the heavens, Gabriel took my hand and sat me down on a carpet from the carpets of Paradise. He handed me a quince, and when I split it in half, a dark-eyed beauty appeared; the edges of her eyes were like the front feathers of an eagle. So, she said: “Peace be unto you, O Ahmad. Peace be unto you, O Messenger of Allah. Peace be unto you, O Muhammad.” So, I said: “Who are you – may Allah have mercy on you?” She said: “I am the satisfied one whom Allah is satisfied with (radiyatan mardiyya). The Powerful created me from three substances: the undermost of me is from musk, the middle of me is from camphor, the uppermost of me is from ambergris, and I have been kneaded from the water of life. The Powerful said ‘be!’ and I became. He created me for your cousin, your deputy, and your vizier `Ali b. Abi Talib .”

Al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Shu`ayb al-Jawhari narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Bakr b. `Abdullah b. Habib narrated to us. He said: Al-Fadl b. al-Saqr al-`Abdi narrated to us. He said: Abu Mu`awiya narrated to us from al-A`mash from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father from his forefathers . He said: The Messenger of Allah (s) went out wearing a black cloak. So, it was said: O Messenger of Allah! Who shrouded you in this black cloak? So, he said: My lover and my elect, my special and my pure one, my representative, my deputy, my inheritor, my brother; the first of the believers to convert to Islam, the sincerest of them in faith, the most gracious of the people in his hands; the Master of the people after me, the Leader of the shining believers, the Imam of the people of the Earth `Ali b. Abi Talib shrouded me in it. Then, he did not stop weeping until his tears became like pebbles in his longing for him.

Muhammad b. `Ali Majiluwayh narrated to us. He said: `Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to us from his father Ibrahim b. Hashim. He said: Abu’l Salt `Abd al-Salam b. Salih narrated to me. He said: Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Firyabi narrated to me from Sufyan from al-Awza`i from Yahya b. Abi Kathir from Habib b. al-Jahm. He said: When `Ali b. Abi Talib went with us to the land of Siffin, he disembarked in a village called Sanduda’. Then, he ordered us to come to it. Then, he disembarked with us at night in a barren land. So, Malik b. al-Harith al-Ashtar went to him and said: O Amir al-Mu’minin ! Why would you cause the people to disembark in a place that does not have water?! So, he said: O Malik! Surely, Allah will feed us water that is purer than honey, softer than butter, colder than snow, and clearer than ruby. So, we became astonished; and there is nothing more astonishing than the words of Amir al-Mu’minin . Then, he began to drag his cloak, with his sword in his hand, until he stood on the barren land. He said: O Malik – you and your companions, dig. So, Malik said: We dug until we found a great black rock with a ring that shone like silver. So, he said to us: Throw it. So, we tried to throw it – and we had one hundred men gathered – but we could not move it from its place. So, Amir al-Mu’minin came forward with his hands raised to the sky, supplicating and saying: … amen, amen O Lord of the Worlds, Lord of Musa and Harun. Then, he took it and hurled it forty armlengths away from a river. Malik b. al-Harith al-Ashtar said: Then, water that was purer than honey, softer than butter, colder than snow, and clearer than ruby appeared to us. We drank from it and fed from it. Then, he returned the rock, and ordered us to throw dust atop it. Then, we continued when, not far away, he said: Which of you know the location of the river? So, we said: All of us, O Amir al-Mu’minin. So, we returned, and we looked for the river, but it had been extremely hidden from us. So, we thought that Amir al-Mu’minin was overburdened with thirst, so we went out and found the hermitage of a monk. We approached it until we found a monk whose eyebrows covered his eyes from old age. So, we said: O monk! Do you have water that we could feed our master with? He said: I have water that I purified two days ago. So, he brought us water that was bitter and rough. We said: Is this what you purified two days ago?! How would you be if you had drunk from the water that our master had given us? So, we told him about the matter, and he said: Is this master of yours a prophet? We said: No, but he is the deputy of a prophet. So, he came down to us after his absence and said: Take me to your master. So, we took him, and when Amir al-Mu’minin saw him, he said: Sham`un? The monk said: Yes, Sham`un, this is the name that my mother gave me. No one knows this except Allah, and now you, so how did you find out? He said: What do you want, Sham`un? He said: This river and its name. He said: This river is Rahuma, and it is from Paradise. Three hundred and thirteen deputies have drunk from it, and I am the last deputy to drink from it. So, the monk said: This is what I found in all the books of the Gospel, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that you are the deputy of Muhammad (s). Then, the monk went with Amir al-Mu’minin until he reached Siffin. The monk was among the first to be martyred. So, Amir al-Mu’minin went down with his eyes saddened, saying: A person will be with whom he loves. The monk will be with us on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be my friend in Paradise.

Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us. He said: Bakr b. `Abdullah b. Habib narrated to us. He said: al-Fadl b. al-Saqr al-`Abdi narrated to us. He said: Abu Mu`awiya narrated to us from Sulayman b. Mehran al-A`mash from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. al-Husayn . He said: We are the Imams of the Muslims, the Proofs of Allah over the Worlds, the Chiefs of the Believers, the Leaders of the shining believers, and the Masters of the Believers. We are a safeguard for the people of Earth just as the stars are a safeguard for the people of the sky. We are the ones by whom Allah holds up the sky from falling, except by His permission. We are the ones by whom He prevents the Earth from shaking its people. We are the ones by whom He sends down rain. We are the ones by whom He spreads mercy and brings out the blessings of the Earth. Had any of us not been on Earth, it would have caved in on its people. He said: The Earth has never been left without a Proof of Allah upon it since Allah created Adam – either apparent and known or hidden and concealed. It will not be empty [of a Proof] until the Hour rises with a Proof upon it. Had it not been for that, Allah would not be worshiped. Sulayman said: So, I said to al-Sadiq : How will people benefit from a Proof that is hidden and concealed? He said: Just as you benefit from the Sun when it is concealed with clouds.

Abu Ja`far recited a poem to one of them: “The intellectual scholar is the son of himself (self-taught), His knowledge has made him needless of his like, How different is one who does for others and one who does for himself!”
