أَلَمْ

تَرَ

إِلَى

الْمَلَإِ

مِن

بَنِي

إِسْرَائِيلَ

مِن

بَعْدِ

مُوسَى

إِذْ

قَالُوا

لِنَبِيٍّ

لَّهُمُ

ابْعَثْ

لَنَا

مَلِكًا

نُّقَاتِلْ

فِي

سَبِيلِ

اللَّهِ

قَالَ

هَلْ

عَسَيْتُمْ

إِن

كُتِبَ

عَلَيْكُمُ

الْقِتَالُ

أَلَّا

تُقَاتِلُوا

قَالُوا

وَمَا

لَنَا

أَلَّا

نُقَاتِلَ

فِي

سَبِيلِ

اللَّهِ

وَقَدْ

أُخْرِجْنَا

مِن

دِيَارِنَا

وَأَبْنَائِنَا

فَلَمَّا

كُتِبَ

عَلَيْهِمُ

الْقِتَالُ

تَوَلَّوْا

إِلَّا

قَلِيلًا

مِّنْهُمْ

وَاللَّهُ

عَلِيمٌ

بِالظَّالِمِينَ

ʾa-lam tara ʾilā l-malaʾi min banī ʾisrāʾīla min baʿdi mūsā ʾidh qālū li-nabiyyin lahumu bʿath lanā malikan nuqātil sabīli llāhi qāla hal ʿasaytum ʾin kutiba ʿalaykumu l-qitālu ʾallā tuqātilū qālū wa-mā lanā ʾallā nuqātila sabīli llāhi wa-qad ʾukhrijnā min diyārinā wa-ʾabnāʾinā fa-lammā kutiba ʿalayhimu l-qitālu tawallaw ʾillā qalīlan minhum wa-llāhu ʿalīmun bi-ẓ-ẓālimīna

(Muhammad), remember that group of the Israelites after Moses who demanded a Prophet of their own to appoint a king for them who would lead them in the fight for the cause of God. Their Prophet then said, "What if you are ordered to fight and you disobey?" They said, "Why should we not fight for the cause of God when we and our sons have been expelled from our homes?" However, when they were ordered to fight, all refused except a few among them. God knows well the unjust.
