Ali ibn al-Hasan, from Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Jahm, from Abdullah ibn Maymun al-Qaddah, from Abu Abdillah Imam Ja’far عليه السلام from his father, Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام, peace be upon them both, who said: Imam عليه السلام said: “Qanbar, the freed slave of Imam Ali عليه السلام, peace be upon him, came to Imam عليه السلام with his food for breaking the fast.” Imam عليه السلام said: “So he (Qanbar) came with a sack in which there was sawiq (porridge-like dish), upon which there was a seal. A man then said to Imam Ali عليه السلام: “O Commander of the Faithful عليه السلام, this is indeed miserliness, that you seal your food.’” Imam Ali عليه السلام, peace be upon him, laughed. Then Imam Ali عليه السلام said: “Is it other than that? I do not like anything to enter my stomach except something whose path I know.” Then Imam Ali عليه السلام broke the seal, took out some sawiq from it, placed some of it in a cup, and gave it to him (the man). Imam Ali عليه السلام took the cup, and when he wanted to drink, he said: ‘In the name of Allah سبحانه وتعالى. O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, for You سبحانه وتعالى we have fasted, and upon Your سبحانه وتعالى provision we have broken our fast, so accept from us. Indeed, You سبحانه وتعالى are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.’” (Bismillah. Allahumma laka sumna, wa ‘ala rizqika aftarna, fa-taqabbal minna. Innaka anta al-sami‘u al-‘alim)
