Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq عليه السلام was asked about performing the supererogatory (nafilah) prayers during the day while traveling. Imam عليه السلام said: "If it were appropriate to perform the nafilah (supererogatory) prayers during travel, then the obligatory (fardh) prayers would have been completed (in full)”.
