`Ali b. Ahmad b. `Abdullah b. Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah al-Barqi narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us from his grandfather Ahmad b. Abi `Abdullah. He said: Sulayman b. Muqbil al-Medini narrated to me. He said: Musa b. Ja`far narrated to me from his father Ja`far b. Muhammad from his father Muhammad b. `Ali from his father `Ali b. al-Husayn from his father al-Husayn b. `Ali from his father Amir al-Mu’minin `Ali b. Abi Talib . He said:

I visited the Messenger of Allah (s) in the Quba Mosque, and with him was a group of his companions. When he saw me, his face became jubilant, and he smiled until I saw his white, shining teeth. Then, he said: To me, O `Ali; to me, O `Ali. Then, he began to hold me closely, until my thigh touched his thigh. Then, he faced his companions and said: O my companions! I have presented mercy to you by presenting `Ali as my brother to you. O my companions! Surely, `Ali is from me, and I am from `Ali. His spirit is from my spirit, and his clay is from my clay. He is my brother, my deputy, and my vicegerent over my Nation in my lifetime and after my death. Whoever obeys him has obeyed me, whoever supports him has supported me, and whoever opposes him has opposed me.
