Al-Husayn b. `Ali b. Ahmad al-Sa’igh رضي الله عنه narrated to us. He said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sa`id al-Hamadani narrated to us. He said: Ja`far b. `Ubaydullah narrated to us from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from `Ali b. Ri’ab from Muhammad b. Qays from Abi Ja`far Muhammad b. `Ali al-Baqir عليه السلام. He said: The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم led his companions in Fajr prayer one day. Then, he sat with them and spoke to them until sunrise. One person after another began leaving, until only two men were left with him: an Ansari and a Thaqafi. So, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said to them: I have come to know that you two have a need, and you want to ask me about it. If you want, I could inform you of your need before you ask it of me; and if you want, you could ask me. They said: Rather, you inform us, O Messenger of Allah, for that would be clearer for the blind, further from suspicion, and more steadfast for faith. So, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: As for you, Ansari brother, you are from a people that favours others over yourselves. You are a villager, and this is a Thaqafi Bedouin, so will you allow him to precede you in questioning? So, he said: Yes. So, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: As for you, Thaqafi brother, you have come to ask me about your ablution and your prayer, and what reward you will reap from them. Know that when you put your hands in the water and say: “In the name of Allah (bismillah)”, the sins of your hands will dissipate. When you wash your face, the sins of what your eyes have seen and what your tongue has said will dissipate. When you wash your arms, the sins to your right and to your left will dissipate. When you wipe your head and your feet, the sins that you walked to on your feet will dissipate. So, this is for you for your ablution. When you go to prayer, face [the qibla], recite the Mother of the Book and what is easy for you from the chapters, bow and perfect your bowing and prostrating, testify, and recite the taslim then every sin that you have committed between each prayer will be forgiven. So, this is for you for your prayer. As for you, Ansari brother, you have come to ask me about your Hajj and `Umra, and what reward you will reap from them. Know that when you face the path of Hajj and journey to it, you will not take a step except that Allah will record a deed for you and erase a sin from you with each step. When you are gowned in the ihram and recite the talbiyya, Allah records ten good deeds and erases ten sins for every talbiyya. When you make seven circuits around the House of Allah, you will have a covenant with Allah, and your Lord would be too ashamed to punish you thereafter. When you pray two units at the maqam, Allah records two thousand accepted good deeds from you. When you perform the sa`i between Safa and Marwan seven times, you will have a reward with Allah that is like walking to Hajj from your country, and a reward that is like the reward of freeing seventy believers. When you stand at `Arafat till sunset, even if you had sins equivalent to the grains of sand and drops in the ocean, Allah will forgive them of you. When you pelt the pebbles [at the pillars], Allah will record ten good deeds for every pebble. When you slaughter your animal, Allah will record a deed for every drop of its blood. When you circle the House seven times in visitation and pray two units at the maqam, a noble angel will strike your shoulders and say: “As for what has passed, it has been forgiven for you. So, resume your work for the next hundred and twenty days.”
