Al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. Sa`id al-Hashimi narrated to us. He said: Furat b. Ibrahim b Furat al-Kufi narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. Ahmad b. `Ali al-Hamadani narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. `Ali al-Shami narrated to us from his father. He said: Abu Jarir narrated to us. He said: `Ata’ al-Khurasani narrated to us, raising it to `Abd al-Rahman b. Ghanam. He said:
Gabriel came to the Messenger of Allah (s) with a beast that was smaller than a mule but bigger than a donkey. Its back legs were taller than its front legs. Its steps were as far as the eye could see. When the Prophet wanted to mount it, it prevented [him from doing so]. So, Gabriel
said: This is Muhammad. So, it humbled itself until it dropped to the Earth. He said: So, he mounted it. Whenever it landed, it would raise its front legs and bend its back legs. Whenever it climbed, it would raise its back legs and bend its front legs. In the darkness of the night, it passed by a loaded caravan. The caravan dispersed due to the shine of the Buraq. So, a man at the end of the caravan called to a boy of his at the front of the caravan: O so-and-so! A camel has been lost, and so-and-so has lost her burdens and broken her hand. The caravan belonged to Abi Sufyan. He said: He continued until he reached the middle of Balqa’ (in Jordan). He said: O Gabriel! I have become thirsty. Hand me, Gabriel, a vessel with water in it. So, he handed it to him, and he drank. Then, he passed by a community that was hanging by their tongues on hooks of fire. So, he said: Who are these, O Gabriel? So, he said: These are the ones whom Allah enriched with permitted things, but they sought the forbidden things. He said: Then, he passed by a community whose skin was being sewn by needles of fire. So, he said: Who are these, O Gabriel? So, he said: These are the ones who unlawfully take the virginity of women. Then, he passed by a man who was lifting a bundle of firewood. Every time he tries to lift it, more was added onto it. So, he said: Who is this, Gabriel? He said: This is a debtor who wants to pay his debt, but whenever he cannot, more was added onto him. Then, he passed by the eastern mountain by the Bayt al-Maqdis, and he found a hot gust and heard a sound. He said: What is this gust that I feel and this sound that I hear, Gabriel? He said: This is Hell. So, the Prophet (s) said: I seek refuge in Allah from Hell. Then, he found a pleasant gust to its right and heard a sound. So, he said: What is this gust that I feel and this sound that I hear, Gabriel? He said: This is Paradise. So, he said: I ask Allah for Paradise. He said: Then, he ended up at the gate of the city of Bayt al-Maqdis, in which was Heraclius. The gates of the city would be locked every night, and then they would come to him with the keys and put it at his head. On that night, the gate was prevented from being locked, so they informed him. So, he said: Double the number of guards. He said: So, the Messenger of Allah (s) came and entered Bayt al-Maqdis. Gabriel
came to the Rock and raised it. Gabriel took three cups from beneath it: a cup of milk, a cup of honey, and a cup of wine. He gave him the cup of milk and he drank it. Then, he gave him the cup of honey and he drank it. Then, he gave him the cup of wine, and he said: It has been forbidden, Gabriel. He said: Surely, if you would have drunken it, your Nation would have become misguided and would have split away from you. He said: Then, the Messenger of Allah (s) led seventy prophets in Bayt al-Maqdis. He said: With Gabriel
, an angel came down that had never stepped on the Earth; and with him were the keys to the treasuries of the Earth. So, he said: O Muhammad! Your Lord recites the salaam to you, and He says: “These are the keys to the treasuries of the Earth. If you wish, you could be a servant-prophet, and if you wish, you could be a kingly prophet.” So, Gabriel
gestured to him: Humility, Muhammad. So, he said: Rather, I will be a servant-prophet. Then, he ascended to heaven. When he ended up at the gate of heaven, Gabriel opened it, and they said: Who is this? He said: Muhammad. They said: The best one to come has come. So, he entered, and he did not pass by a single angel except that it greeted him, prayed for him, and came close to him. He passed by an elder sitting under a tree with children around him. So, the Messenger of Allah (s) said: Who is this elder, Gabriel? He said: This is your father Ibrahim. He said: Who are these children around him? He said: These are the children of the believers. They are around him as he feeds them. Then he passed by an elder sitting on a chair: when he looked to his right, he smiled and became happy, but when he looked to his left, he became sorrowful and wept. So, he said: Who is this, Gabriel? He said: This is your father Adam. When he sees his descendants enter Paradise, he smiles and becomes joyful. When he sees his descendants enter the Fire, he becomes sorrowful and weeps. Then, he passed by an angel sitting on a chair, so he greeted him. He did not see the joy in his face that he saw in the other angels, so he said: O Gabriel! I did not pass by an angel but that I saw something that I loved from him, except for this one. So, who is this angel? He said: This is Malik, the keeper of the Fire. He was one of the most beautiful angels in his face, but when he was made the keeper of the Fire, this happened to him. He saw what Allah did to its people and he did not smile after that. Then, he continued until he was given the obligation of fifty prayers. He said: So, he accepted that. Then, he passed by Musa
, who said: O Muhammad! How many have been obligated on your Nation? He said: Fifty prayers. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten the load on your Nation. He said: So, he went back, then he passed by Musa
, who said: How many have been obligated on your Nation? He said: Such and such. He said: Surely, your Nation is the weakest of nations, so return to your Lord and ask him to lighten the load on your Nation, for surely, I was with the Children of Israel, and they were not able to do even less than this. So, he did not stop returning to his Lord until He made it five prayers. He said: Then, he passed by Musa
, who said: How many have been obligated on your Nation? He said: Five prayers. He said: Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten the load on your Nation. He said: I am too embarrassed to return to my Lord again. Then, he passed by Ibrahim the Friend of the Merciful, and he called out to him from behind him, saying: O Muhammad! Recite the salaam to your Nation on my behalf and inform them that the homes of Paradise are pure and its dust is perfume. Its plains are white, and their vegetation is "may Allah be glorified, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the greatest, and there is no ability nor power except by Allah (subhanallah, alhamdulillah, la ilaha illallah, Allahu akhbar, and la hawla wala quwwata illa billah)", so pass by your Nation and [tell them to] plant frequently in them. Then, he passed by a caravan that was headed by a grey camel. Then, he went to the people of Mecca and informed them of his journey. In Mecca there were a people who had been to Bayt al-Maqdis, so he informed them. Then, he said: The sign of this is that a caravan will come at the moment of sunrise, headed by a grey mule. He said: So, they looked, and they found that it had risen, and he informed them that it had passed by Abi Sufyan, and that it had lost a camel in part of the night, and that he called for a boy of his at the front of the caravan: "O so-and-so! This camel has been lost, and so-and-so has lost her burdens and broken her hand." So, they asked him about this, and they found that it was just as the Prophet (s) had said.
