Hadith #26

My father (ra) narrated to us. He said: `Abdullah b. Ja`far al-Himyari narrated to us. He said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi’l Khattab narrated to us from al-Hasan b. `Ali b. al-Faddal from al-Muthanna from Layth b. Abi Sulaym. He said: I heard a man from the Ansar say: We were with the Messenger of Allah (s), shaded by the shade of a tree on an intensely hot day, when a man came, removed [some of] his clothes, and rolled in the scorching heat. He was on his back once, on his stomach once, and on his side once, saying: “O self! Taste this, for what is with Allah is greater than what you have done to yourself!” So, the Messenger of Allah (s) was looking at what he was doing. Then, the man put on his clothes and came forward. So, the Prophet (s) gestured to him with his hand and called to him. So, he said to him: O servant of Allah! I have seen you do something that I have not seen any one of the people do. So, what caused you to do what you did? So, the man said: My fear of Allah caused me to do this. I said to myself: “O self! Taste this, for what is with Allah is greater than what you have done to yourself!” So, the Prophet (s) said: You have feared your Lord as He is to be rightly feared. Your Lord is boasting about you to the people of heaven. Then, he said to his companions: O you who are present! Come closer to your companion so that he may pray for you. So, they came closer to him, and he prayed for them, saying: O Allah! Gather our affairs upon guidance, increase us in God-consciousness and make Paradise our home.
