My father narrated to us. He said: Al-Hasan b. Ahmad al-Maliki narrated to us from his father from `Ali b. al-Mu’ammal. He said:

I met Musa b. Ja`far and he used to dye with red. So, I said: May I be your sacrifice! This is not from the dye of your family. So, he said: Yes, I used to dye with isatis, but it began hurting my teeth. When a man would convert to Islam during the time of the Messenger of Allah (s), he would do that. Once, Amir al-Mu’minin dyed with yellow, and he told the Prophet (s) that, and he said: “Islam.” So, he dyed with red, and he told the Prophet (s) that, and he said: “Islam and faith.” So, he dyed with black, and he told the Prophet (s) that, and he said: “Islam, faith, and light.”
