Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Yahya al-`Attar narrated to us. He said: Sa`d b. `Abdullah narrated to us from al-Haytham b. Abi Masruq al-Nahdi from al-Hasan b. Mahbub from Sama`a b. Mehran from al-Sadiq Ja`far b. Muhammad . He said:

When a worshiper’s sins have increased, and he does not find anything to atone them by, Allah afflicts him with grief in this world to atone him of them. Then, his body will ail him so that it may atone him of them. Then, his death will be intensified for him so that it may atone him of them. Then, he will be punished in the grave so that he may meet Allah on the Day that he meets Him without anything of his sins testifying against him.
