8. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al`Attar, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn `Imran al-Ash`ari, on the authority of `Ali ibn Isma`il, on the authority of Safwan ibn Yahya, on the authority Abu Ayyub, on the authority of Muhammad ibn Muslim, that Abu `Abd Allah al-Sadiq said:

The Jews asked the Messenger of Allah : “Describe your Lord for us.” He did not answer them for three days persistently until this chapter from the Qur`an was revealed to its end.” I asked him : “Who is the Needless [al-Samad]?” He replied: “The Needless is He who is Hollow.”
