In asking Pardon

allāhumma innī aʿtaḏiru ilayk

O God, I ask pardon from Thee for

min maẓlūm ẓulima bi-ḥaḍratī falam anṣurhu

the person wronged in my presence whom I did not help,

wa-min ma'rūfin usdiya ilayya falam ashkurhu

the favour conferred upon me for which I returned no thanks,

wa min musi'in a'thara ilayya falam a'zirhu

the evildoer who asked pardon from me and whom I did not pardon,

wa-min dhī fāqah sa'alani falam ʾūthirhu

the needy person who asked from me and whom I preferred not over myself,

wa min ḥaqqi dhī ḥaqqin lazimanī li-mu'min falam awaffirhu

the right of a believer who possesses a right incumbent upon me which I did not fulfil,

wa min ʿaybi al-muʾmin ẓahara lī falam asturhu

the fault of a believer which became evident to me and which I did not conceal,

wa min kulli ithmin 'aradha li falam ahjurhu

and every sin which presented itself to me and which I failed to avoid.

'aṭaẓiru ilayka yā ilahī minhunna

I ask pardon, my God, for all of these

wa min naẓāʾirihi-nna iʿtiẓāra nadāmah

and their likes, with an asking of pardon in remorse

yakunu wāʿiẓān limā bayna yadayya min ashbāhihinna

which may act as an admonisher against similar things ahead of me.

faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih

So bless Muhammad and his Household

waajʿal nadāmati ʿalā mā waqaʿtu fīhi minalzallāti

and make my remorse for the slips into which I have fallen

waʿazmī ʿalā tar-kī mā yaʿ-riḍu lī mina al-sayyiat

and my determination to refrain from the evil deeds which present themselves to me

tawbatun tu'jibu lī maḥabbatak

a repentance which will make Thy love for me obligatory,

yā muḥibba al-tawwābīn

O lover of those who repent!
