The Pigeons
19 Aḥadīth

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ وَ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ قَالَ الْحَمَامُ مِنْ طُيُورِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ( عليهم السلام ) .


1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from an ibn Mahbub from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab who has said the following: “He (the Imam) (a.s), has said, ‘Pigeons are the birds of the Prophets, ‘Alayhim al- Salam.”’

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى مَوْلَى آلِ سَامٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ حَمَامٍ كَانَ بِمَكَّةَ حَمَامٌ لِإِسْمَاعِيلَ ( عليه السلام ) .


2. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman from ‘Abd al-‘ Ala’ Mawla’ Ale Sam who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), saying, ‘The first pigeon in Makkah was the pigeon of Tsma‘il ‘Alayhi al-Salam.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ أَصْلَ حَمَامِ الْحَرَمِ بَقِيَّةُ حَمَامٍ كَانَ لِإِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ( عليه السلام ) اتَّخَذَهَا كَانَ يَأْنَسُ بِهَافَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يُسْتَحَبُّ أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ طَيْراً مَقْصُوصاً تَأْنَسُ بِهِ مَخَافَةَ الْهَوَامِّ .


3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘The real free pigeon remaining is the pigeon that belonged to Tsma‘il ibn Ibrahim, ‘Alayhima al-Salam, who kept it for comfort. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘It is preferable to keep a bird with clipped wings for comfort and for (to dispel) fear from vermin.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمَّادٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَائِذٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ هَذِهِ الْحَمَامُ حَمَامُ الْحَرَمِ هِيَ مِنْ نَسْلِ حَمَامِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ( عليه السلام ) الَّتِي كَانَتْ لَهُ .


4. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad from al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘A’idh from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), saying, ‘These pigeons -the pigeons of al-Haram (the sacred area) - are of the offspring of the pigeon of Tsma‘il ibn Ibrahim, ‘Alayhima al-Salam, that belonged to him.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمَّادٍ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَائِذٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَيْسَ مِنْ بَيْتٍ فِيهِ حَمَامٌ إِلَّا لَمْ يُصِبْ أَهْلَ ذَلِكَ الْبَيْتِ آفَةٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ إِنَّ سُفَهَاءَ الْجِنِّ يَعْبَثُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَيَعْبَثُونَ بِالْحَمَامِ وَ يَتْرُكُونَ الْإِنْسَانَ .


5. Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Salih ibn abu Hammad and Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad all from al-Washsha’ from Ahmad ibn ‘A’idh from abu Khadijah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘A house in which pigeons exist, the people of that house do not receive any harm from Jinn. The dimwitted Jinns play in the house, thus they play with pigeons and the people are left alone.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ شَكَا رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْوَحْشَةَ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ فِي بَيْتِهِ زَوْجَ حَمَامٍ .


6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Ubayd Allah al-Dihqan from Durust from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that once a man complained before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, about loneliness and fear. He (the Messenger of Allah) commanded him to keep a pair of pigeons in his house.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَنْدَلٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ قَالَ ذُكِرَتِ الْحَمَامُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ اتَّخِذُوهَا فِي مَنَازِلِكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا مَحْبُوبَةٌ لَحِقَتْهَا دَعْوَةُ نُوحٍ ( عليه السلام ) وَ هِيَ آنَسُ شَيْ‏ءٍ فِي الْبُيُوتِ .


7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from abu ‘Abd Allah, al-Jamuraniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from his father from Sandal from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “I once mentioned pigeons before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and he (the Imam) said, ‘You can keep them in your homes; it is a lovely (hobby). The prayer of Nuh (Noah) (a.s), has arrived at them. It is the most comforting thing in the house.’”

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْحَمَامُ طَيْرٌ مِنْ طُيُورِ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ( عليهم السلام ) الَّتِي كَانُوا يُمْسِكُونَ فِي بُيُوتِهِمْ وَ لَيْسَ مِنْ بَيْتٍ فِيهِ حَمَامٌ إِلَّا لَمْ تُصِبْ أَهْلَ ذَلِكَ الْبَيْتِ آفَةٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ إِنَّ سُفَهَاءَ الْجِنِّ يَعْبَثُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَيَعْبَثُونَ بِالْحَمَامِ وَ يَدَعُونَ النَّاسَ قَالَ فَرَأَيْتُ فِي بُيُوتِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) حَمَاماً لِابْنِهِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ .


8. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from a man from ‘Umar ibn Yazid from abu Salamah who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s), has said that pigeons are of the birds of the Prophets, ‘Alayhim al- Salam, who kept them in their homes. Any home in which there is a pigeon, the people therein are not harmed by the dimwitted ones of Jinn who plays in the house, thus they play with the pigeons and leave the people alone.’ I then saw in the house of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), a pigeon that belonged to his son ’Isma‘il.”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ نَظَرَ إِلَى حَمَامٍ فِي بَيْتِهِ مَا مِنِ انْتِفَاضٍ يَنْتَفِضُ بِهَا إِلَّا نَفَّرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مَنْ دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ مِنْ عُزْمَةِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ .


9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from Ya‘qub ibn Ja‘far who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s), looked at pigeons in his house and said, ‘With every vibration that it causes, Allah thereby dispels from the house the incantations and spells by the people on earth that may try to enter therein.”’

عَنْهُ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ صَنْدَلٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ جَالِساً فِي بَيْتِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى حَمَامٍ رَاعِبِيٍّ يُقَرْقِرُ طَوِيلًا فَنَظَرَ إِلَيَّ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ يَا دَاوُدُ تَدْرِي مَا يَقُولُ هَذَا الطَّيْرُ قُلْتُ لَا وَ اللَّهِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ يَدْعُو عَلَى قَتَلَةِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَاتَّخِذُوا فِي مَنَازِلِكُمْ .


10. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Jamuraniy from ibn abu Hamzah from Sandal from Dawud ibn Farqad who has said the following: “I once was sitting in the house of abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and I looked at a pigeon of Ra’‘ibiy kind (name of a place) that made a long sound. Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), looked at me and asked, ‘O Dawud, do you know what this bird says?’ I said, ‘No, I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It prays against the people who murdered al- Husayn (a.s), so you must keep it in your homes.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْأَزْرَقِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ إِنَّ حَفِيفَ أَجْنِحَةِ الْحَمَامِ لَتَطْرُدُ الشَّيَاطِينَ .


11. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from a man from Yahya al-Arzaq who has said the following: I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), saying, ‘The sound of the wings of pigeon dispels the devils.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَدْفَعُ بِالْحَمَامِ عَنْ هَدَّةِ الدَّارِ .


12. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, with pigeons, keeps a house safe from crumbling down.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ اتَّخِذُوا الْحَمَامَ الرَّاعِبِيَّةَ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ فَإِنَّهَا تَلْعَنُ قَتَلَةَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) وَ لَعَنَ اللَّهُ قَاتِلَهُ .


13. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘You must keep al-Ra’‘ibiy pigeon in your homes because it condemns the murderers of al-Husayn ibn Ali, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, and Allah has condemned his killer.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيِّ قَالَ اسْتَهْدَانِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَأَهْدَيْتُ لَهُ طَيْراً رَاعِبِيّاً فَدَخَلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ اجْعَلُوا هَذَا الطَّيْرَ الرَّاعِبِيَّ مَعِي فِي الْبَيْتِ يُؤْنِسُنِيقَالَ وَ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ حَمَامٌ يَفُتُّ لَهُنَّ خُبْزاً .


14. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Bakr ibn Salih from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah from ‘Uthman al- Asbahaniy who has said the following: “’Isma‘il ibn abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), asked me for a gift and I gave him a Ra’Tbiy bird (a pigeon). Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), came in and said, ‘Keep this al-Ra’‘ibiy bird in the house with me for comfort.’ ‘Uthman has said, ‘I once visited abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), when in front of him there was a pigeon for which he (the Imam) made the bread in pieces.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَارِقِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَرَأَيْتُ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ ثَلَاثَ حَمَامَاتٍ خُضْرٍ قَدْ ذَرَقْنَ عَلَى الْفِرَاشِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْحَمَامُ تَقْذَرُ الْفِرَاشَ فَقَالَ لَا إِنَّهُ يُسْتَحَبُّ أَنْ تُسْكَنَ فِي الْبَيْتِ .


15. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Bakr ibn Salih from Ash‘ath ibn ‘Uthman ibn Muhammad al-Bariqiy from ‘ Abd al-Karim ibn Salih who has said the following: “I once went to visit abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and I saw three green pigeons on his furnishing which had made droppings on the furnishings and I said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, these pigeons have dirtied the furnishings.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is preferable that they stay inside the house.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ فِي مَنْزِلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) زَوْجُ حَمَامٍ أَحْمَرُ .


16. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from certain persons of his people from Aban from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that in the house of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, there was a pair of red pigeons.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ السِّنْدِيِّ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْأَزْرَقِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) احْتَفَرَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) بِئْراً فَرَمَوْا فِيهَا فَأُخْبِرَ بِذَلِكَ فَجَاءَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ لَتَكُفَّنَّ أَوْ لَأُسْكِنَنَّهَا الْحَمَامَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّ حَفِيفَ أَجْنِحَتِهَا تَطْرُدُ الشَّيَاطِينَ .


17. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu Najran from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr [and] Ibrahim al-Sindiy from Yahya al- Azraq who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin had dug a well, then they threw things in it and it was reported to him (the Imam). He went, stood on the well and said, ‘You must stop throwing things in it, otherwise, I will make the pigeons to use it as their living place.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), then said, ‘The sound of the flapping wings of a pigeon repels Shayatin.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا قَالَ ذُكِرَ الْحَمَامُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ إِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حَمَاماً يَطِيرُ وَ رَجُلٌ تَحْتَهُ يَعْدُو فَقَالَ عُمَرُ شَيْطَانٌ يَعْدُو تَحْتَهُ شَيْطَانٌ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) مَا كَانَ إِسْمَاعِيلُ عِنْدَكُمْ فَقِيلَ صِدِّيقٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّ بَقِيَّةَ حَمَامِ الْحَرَمِ مِنْ حَمَامِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ .


18. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “Once, pigeons were mentioned before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and a man said, ‘It has come to my knowledge that once ‘Umar saw a pigeon flying and a man underneath was running. ‘Umar then said, “One Satan runs under another Satan.” Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), then said, ‘(It is because) Tsma‘il was not there with you.’ Someone then asked, ‘Was he (Tsma‘il) a friend (of pigeons)?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The pigeons of al-Haram (the sacred area) are of the remaining pigeons of Tsma‘il.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الزَّوْجِ مِنَ الْحَمَامِ يُفْرِخُ عِنْدَهُ يَتَزَوَّجُ الطَّيْرُ أُمَّهُ وَ ابْنَتَهُ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِمَا كَانَ بَيْنَ الْبَهَائِمِ .


19. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ahmad ibn Muhammad from all from ibn abu Nasr who has said the following: “Once a man asked al-Rida’ (a.s), about a pair of pigeons which hatched chicks with him; if a bird can mate a mother bird or daughter bird. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not harmful with what is in animals.’”
