Fencing Wall Around a Flat Roof of the House
6 Aḥadīth

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَنْ يُبَاتَ عَلَى سَطْحٍ غَيْرِ مُحَجَّرٍ .


1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn af-Hakam who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited sleeping on the flat roof without a safety fencing wall around it.’”

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ الْيَسَعِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) مَنْ بَاتَ عَلَى سَطْحٍ غَيْرِ مُحَجَّرٍ فَأَصَابَهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ .


2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Ali ibn Ishaq from Sahl ibn al-Yasa’ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘One who sleeps on a flat roof without a safety fencing walls around it and if something happened to him, he must not blame anyone except his own soul.”’

عَنْهُ عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَبِيتَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى سَطْحٍ لَيْسَتْ عَلَيْهِ حُجْرَةٌ وَ الرَّجُلُ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ فِي ذَلِكَ سَوَاءٌ .


3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Hajj al from ‘Abd Allah ibn Bukayr from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), disliked a man’s sleeping overnight on a flat roof without safety fencing wall around it. It is the same for both men women.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الْبَيْتُوتَةَ لِلرَّجُلِ عَلَى سَطْحٍ وَحْدَهُ أَوْ عَلَى سَطْحٍ لَيْسَتْ عَلَيْهِ حُجْرَةٌ وَ الرَّجُلُ وَ الْمَرْأَةُ فِيهِ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ .


4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), disliked a man’s sleeping alone overnight on a flat roof without safety fencing wall around it; and that it is the same for both men and women.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي السَّطْحِ يُبَاتُ عَلَيْهِ وَ هُوَ غَيْرُ مُحَجَّرٍ قَالَ يُجْزِيهِ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِقْدَارُ ارْتِفَاعِ الْحَائِطِ ذِرَاعَيْنِ .


5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn abu Hamzah and others who has said the following: “About the case of a flat roof without fencing wall around it abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘If the height of the fencing wall around a flat roof is two yards (Zira’ arm-length) it is sufficient.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ عِيصِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ السَّطْحِ يُنَامُ عَلَيْهِ بِغَيْرِ حُجْرَةٍ قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةِ حِيطَانٍ فَقَالَ لَا إِلَّا أَرْبَعَةً قُلْتُ كَمْ طُولُ الْحَائِطِ قَالَ أَقْصَرُهُ ذِرَاعٌ وَ شِبْرٌ .


6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from Safwan ibn Yahya from ‘Is ibn al-Qasim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about sleeping overnight on a flat roof without fencing wall around it. He (the Imam) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, prohibited it.’ I then asked if three yards (Zira’ arm-length) is sufficient for the height of such fencing wall. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it is four.’ I then asked, ‘How much is the length of the wall?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The shortest is one yard (Zira’ arm-length) and one Shibr. (the distance from the tip of the thump to the tip of the little finger with the thump and little finger open and stretched out).”’
