Al-Kāfi

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمٍ الْفَرَّاءِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَكْتَحِلُ بِالْإِثْمِدِ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ وَتْراً وَتْراً .

1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from and Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Salim al-Farra’ from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, applied al-Athmad (antimony) to his eyes before going to bed, once in each eye. 5 ”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ الْجَهْمِ قَالَ أَرَانِي أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) مِيلًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ وَ مُكْحُلَةً مِنْ عِظَامٍ فَقَالَ هَذَا كَانَ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ فَاكْتَحِلْ بِهِ فَاكْتَحَلْتُ .

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from al-Hassan ibn al-Jahm who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan (a.s.), once showed me a pin made of iron and a powder container of bones and said that this belonged to abu al-Hassan with which he applied eye powder and I also apply eye powder to my eyes.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْكُحْلُ بِاللَّيْلِ يَنْفَعُ الْعَيْنَ وَ هُوَ بِالنَّهَارِ زِينَةٌ .

3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Musa ibn al-Qasim from Safwan from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder to one’s eyes is beneficial to the eyes and it is beautification during the day.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْهَاشِمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَ عَمِّهِ قَالَا قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) الِاكْتِحَالُ بِالْإِثْمِدِ يُطَيِّبُ النَّكْهَةَ وَ يَشُدُّ أَشْفَارَ الْعَيْنِ .

4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Fadl al-Flashimiy from his father and uncle who have said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder with Athmad (antimony) sweetens the fragrance and strengthens the edge of the eyelid.’”

عَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْكُحْلُ يُعْذِبُ الْفَمَ .

5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal from Hammad ibn ‘Isa who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder sweetens the mouth.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْكُحْلُ يُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ وَ يُحِدُّ الْبَصَرَ وَ يُعِينُ عَلَى طُولِ السُّجُودِ .

6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from Khalaf ibn Hammad from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder grows hairs, sharpens eyesight and helps to perform longer Sujud (prostrations).”’

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْإِثْمِدُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَ يُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِالدَّمْعَةِ .

7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from a man who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Al-Athmad (antimony) sharpens eye sight, grows hairs and banishes tears.’”

ابْنُ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( صلوات الله عليه ) قَالَ الْكُحْلُ يَزِيدُ فِي الْمُبَاضَعَةِ .

8. Ibn Faddal has narrated from certain persons of our people who have said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder increases the desire to go to bed with ones’ wife.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنْ نَامَ عَلَى إِثْمِدٍ غَيْرِ مُمَسَّكٍ أَمِنَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ الْأَسْوَدِ أَبَداً مَا دَامَ يَنَامُ عَلَيْهِ .

9. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Ahmad ibn al-Mubarak from al-Husayn ibn al-Hassan ibn ‘Asem from his father who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ’If one sleeps with eye powder containing Athmad (antimony) but without musk, he remains immune from Ma’ al-Aswad (a certain eye illness) all the time as long as he sleeps with it.”’

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ الْكُحْلُ يُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ وَ يُجَفِّفُ الدَّمْعَةَ وَ وَ يُعْذِبُ الرِّيقَ وَ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ .

10. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hammad ibn ‘Isa who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Applying eye powder grows hairs, dries up tears, sweetens saliva and sharpens eyesight.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) مَنِ اكْتَحَلَ فَلْيُوتِرْ وَ مَنْ فَعَلَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ وَ مَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ فَلَا بَأْسَ .

11. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ibn Faddal from ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘If one applies eye powder, he must do it once because it is good; and if he did not do so it is not harmful.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) كَانَ يَكْتَحِلُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنَامَ أَرْبَعاً فِي الْيُمْنَى وَ ثَلَاثاً فِي الْيُسْرَى .

12. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Musa ibn al-Qasim from Safwan from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, applied eye powder before going to sleep-four times in the right and three in the left.’”
