Book 5, Chapter 83

The Ghee
6 Aḥadīth

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) سُمُونُ الْبَقَرِ شِفَاءٌ .


1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from af-Nawfafiy from af-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘In ghee from cows there is a cure. 5 ”

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) السَّمْنُ دَوَاءٌ وَ هُوَ فِي الصَّيْفِ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ وَ مَا دَخَلَ جَوْفاً مِثْلُهُ .


2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘In ghee there is a cure. It is better in summer than it is in winter and no other thing like it enters inside (the stomach).’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ السَّمْنُ .


3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from al-Muttalib ibn Ziyad who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Ghee is a very fine sauce.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ إِذَا بَلَغَ الرَّجُلُ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً فَلَا يَبِيتَنَّ وَ فِي جَوْفِهِ شَيْ‏ءٌ مِنَ السَّمْنِ .


4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘When a man becomes fifty years old he must not go to sleep with an amount of ghee in his stomach.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فَكَلَّمَهُ شَيْخٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا لِي أَرَى كَلَامَكَ مُتَغَيِّراً فَقَالَ لَهُ سَقَطَتْ مَقَادِيمُ فَمِي فَنَقَصَ كَلَامِي فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ أَنَا أَيْضاً قَدْ سَقَطَ بَعْضُ أَسْنَانِي حَتَّى إِنَّهُ لَيُوَسْوِسُ إِلَيَّ الشَّيْطَانُ فَيَقُولُ لِي إِذَا ذَهَبَتِ الْبَقِيَّةُ فَبِأَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ تَأْكُلُ فَأَقُولُ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِثُمَّ قَالَ لِي عَلَيْكَ بِالثَّرِيدِ فَإِنَّهُ صَالِحٌ وَ اجْتَنِبِ السَّمْنَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُلَائِمُ الشَّيْخَ .


5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), and an old man from Iraq spoke to him (the Imam) who asked the man, ‘Why has your voice changed?’ The man replied, ‘It is because my front teeth have gone, so there is defect in my speaking.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), said to him, ‘Certain ones of my teeth have also gone. Satan presents the temptation that what will happen if your other teeth go, how will then you eat? I say that there is no means and no power without Allah.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘You must eat Tharid (bread made in pieces in broth), it is suitable, and stay away from ghee because it is not suitable for an old man.’”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي حَفْصٍ الْأَبَّارِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ السَّمْنُ مَا دَخَلَ جَوْفاً مِثْلُهُ وَ إِنَّنِي لَأَكْرَهُهُ لِلشَّيْخِ .


6. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from his father from those whom he has mentioned from abu Hafs al-Abbar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Nothing entering inside is (as good) as ghee but I dislike it for an old man.’”
