Al-Kāfi - Volume 6 > Flesh of Animals that Feed on Human Feces, their Eggs and the Sheep that Drinks Wine
Hadith #1

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَأْكُلُوا لُحُومَ الْجَلَّالَاتِ وَ هِيَ الَّتِي تَأْكُلُ الْعَذِرَةَ وَ إِنْ أَصَابَكَ مِنْ عَرَقِهَا فَاغْسِلْهُ .

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Hisham ibn Salim from abu Hamzah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not eat the flesh of animals that feed on human feces, and if their perspiration comes in contact with you, wash it clean.”



Hadith #2

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَشْرَبْ مِنْ أَلْبَانِ الْإِبِلِ الْجَلَّالَةِ وَ إِنْ أَصَابَكَ شَيْ‏ءٌ مِنْ عَرَقِهَا فَاغْسِلْهُ .

2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Do not drink the milk of camels that feed on human feces; and if their perspiration comes in contact with you, wash it clean.’”



Hadith #3

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) الدَّجَاجَةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا حَتَّى تُقَيَّدَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الْبَطَّةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ خَمْسَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الشَّاةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الْبَقَرَةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ عِشْرِينَ يَوْماً وَ النَّاقَةُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً .

3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, “If a chicken feeds on human feces, it cannot be used for food until it is quarantined for three days. ‘If it is a duck, quarantine time is five days, for a sheep for ten days, for a cow twenty days and for a camel it is forty days.’”



Hadith #4

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الشَّحَّامِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي شَاةٍ تَشْرَبُ خَمْراً حَتَّى سَكِرَتْ ثُمَّ ذُبِحَتْ عَلَى تِلْكَ الْحَالِ قَالَ لَا يُؤْكَلُ مَا فِي بَطْنِهَا .

4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from abu Jamilah from Zayd al-Shahham who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If a sheep drinks wine until it is drunk, then is slaughtered in that condition, the contents of its inside are not edible.’”



Hadith #5

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أُكَيْلٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فِي شَاةٍ شَرِبَتْ بَوْلًا ثُمَّ ذُبِحَتْ قَالَ فَقَالَ يُغْسَلُ مَا فِي جَوْفِهَا ثُمَّ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا اعْتَلَفَتِ الْعَذِرَةَ وَ مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ جَلَّالَةً وَ الْجَلَّالَةُ الَّتِي يَكُونُ ذَلِكَ غِذَاءَهَا .

5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad from certain persons of our people from Ali ibn Hassa’n from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from Musa ibn ‘Ukayl from certain persons of our people who has said the following: “About the case of a sheep that drinks urine, then is slaughtered, abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The contents of its inside must be washed clean, then it is not unlawful, and also if it eats feces but is not a Jallal, which is an animal that has feces as its only feed.’”



Hadith #6

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْأَدَمِيِّ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) الْإِبِلُ الْجَلَّالَةُ إِذَا أَرَدْتَ نَحْرَهَا تَحْبِسُ الْبَعِيرَ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ الْبَقَرَةَ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْماً وَ الشَّاةَ عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ .

6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad al-Adamiy from Ya’qub ibn Yazid in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A camel that feeds on feces; if you want to Nahr (slaughter) it, then keep it in quarantine for forty days; such a cow for thirty days and keep such a sheep for ten days.’”



Hadith #7

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْخَشَّابِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَمَّنْ رَوَى فِي الْجَلَّالَاتِ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِأَكْلِهِنَّ إِذَا كُنَّ يُخْلَطْنَ .

7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Khashshab from Ali ibn Asbat from the one who narrated to him who has narrated the following: “About animals that feed on feces he (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If the feed of an animal is mixed with other feed besides feces, then it is not unlawful to use it for food.’”



Hadith #8

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَكْلِ لُحُومِ الدَّجَاجِ فِي الدَّسَاكِرِ وَ هُمْ لَا يَمْنَعُونَهَا مِنْ شَيْ‏ءٍ تَمُرُّ عَلَى الْعَذِرَةِ مُخَلًّى عَنْهَا وَ عَنْ أَكْلِ بَيْضِهِنَّ فَقَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ .

8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Barqiy from Sa‘d ibn Sa‘d al-Ash‘ariy who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the chickens in a village which move around unrestricted. They may pass by feces freely and eat thereof and about their eggs. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’”



Hadith #9

الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ السَّيَّارِيِّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) فِي السَّمَكِ الْجَلَّالِ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ يُنْتَظَرُ بِهِ يَوْماً وَ لَيْلَةً وَ قَالَ السَّيَّارِيُّ إِنَّ هَذَا لَا يَكُونُ إِلَّا بِالْبَصْرَةِوَ قَالَ فِي الدَّجَاجِ يُحْبَسُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الْبَطَّةِ سَبْعَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الشَّاةِ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشْرَةَ يَوْماً وَ الْبَقَرَةِ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْماً وَ الْإِبِلِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً ثُمَّ تُذْبَحُ .

9. Al-Husayn from Muhammad al-Sayyariy has narrated from Ahmad ibn al-Fudayl from Yunus who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the fish that feeds on feces. He (the Imam) said, ‘It must be kept in quarantine for a day and a night, such a chicken for three days, such a duck for seven days, a sheep for fourteen days, a cow thirty days and such a camel must be kept in quarantine for forty days before being slaughtered.’”



Hadith #10

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ . قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) عَنْ بَيْضِ الْغُرَابِ فَقَالَ لَا تَأْكُلْهُ .

10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from abu ’Isma‘il who has said the following: “I once asked al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the eggs of crows. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not eat them.’”



Hadith #11

حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْمِيثَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ بَسَّامٍ الصَّيْرَفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الْإِبِلِ الْجَلَّالَةِ قَالَ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا وَ لَا تُرْكَبُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً .

11. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from Ahmad ibn al-Hassan al-Mithamiy from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Bassam al=Sayrafiy who has said the following: “About the case of a camel that feeds on feces, abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It cannot be used for food or riding for forty days.’”



Hadith #12

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مِسْمَعٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) النَّاقَةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا وَ لَا يُشْرَبُ لَبَنُهَا حَتَّى تُغَذَّى أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْماً وَ الْبَقَرَةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا وَ لَا يُشْرَبُ لَبَنُهَا حَتَّى تُغَذَّى ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْماً وَ الشَّاةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا وَ لَا يُشْرَبُ لَبَنُهَا حَتَّى تُغَذَّى عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الْبَطَّةُ الْجَلَّالَةُ لَا يُؤْكَلُ لَحْمُهَا حَتَّى تُرْبَطَ خَمْسَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَ الدَّجَاجَةُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ .

12. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn al-Hassan al-Shammun from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from Misma‘ who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘The milk and flesh of a camel that feeds on feces are not edible until it feeds on clean feed for forty days, such a cow for thirty days, such a sheep for ten days, such a duck for five days and such a chicken must be kept in quarantine for three days.’”
