The Preferable and Non-preferable Milk
14 Aḥadīth
Ḥadīth 1

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَلَبِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) امْرَأَةٌ وَلَدَتْ مِنَ الزِّنَا أَتَّخِذُهَا ظِئْراً قَالَ لَا تَسْتَرْضِعْهَا وَ لَا ابْنَتَهَا .

1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Faddal from ibn Bukayr from ‘Ubayd Allah al-Halabiy who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a woman who has given birth because of fornication; if I can hire her for breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not hire her for breastfeeding as well as her daughter.”’

Ḥadīth 2

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْكَاهِلِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ مُظَائَرَةِ الْمَجُوسِيِّ فَقَالَ لَا وَ لَكِنْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ .

2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Kahiliy from ‘ Abd Allah ibn Hilal who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if a Zoroastrian woman can be hired for breastfeeding a child. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, however, she can be of the people of the book.’”

Ḥadīth 3

وَ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْكَاهِلِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا أَرْضَعْنَ لَكُمْ فَامْنَعُوهُنَّ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْخَمْرِ.

3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from al-Kahiliy from ‘Abd Allah ibn Hilal who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘When they breastfeed for you do not allow them to drink wine.’”

Ḥadīth 4

حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) هَلْ يَصْلُحُ لِلرَّجُلِ أَنْ تُرْضِعَ لَهُ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ وَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةُ وَ الْمُشْرِكَةُ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ وَ قَالَ امْنَعُوهُنَّ مِنْ شُرْبِ الْخَمْرِ .

4. Humayd ibn Ziyad al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), if it is proper to hire a Jewish or a Christian or a pagan woman for breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful but do not allow them to drink wine.’”

Ḥadīth 5

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَبَنُ الْيَهُودِيَّةِ وَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةِ وَ الْمَجُوسِيَّةِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ لَبَنِ وَلَدِ الزِّنَا

5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father, from Hammad from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘The milk of a Jewish, a Christian or a Zoroastrian woman is more likeable to me than the milk of a woman because of fornication.’ He (the Imam) would not consider it unlawful if the breastfeeding woman is a slave-girl who has committed fornication and her master gives permission.”

Ḥadīth 6

6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthaman from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a boy who impregnated my slave-girl who then gave birth and we needed her milk. If I give permission, will her milk be fine? He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it will be fine.’”

Ḥadīth 7

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ وَ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ وَ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي خَلَفٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الْمَرْأَةِ يَكُونُ لَهَا الْخَادِمُ قَدْ فَجَرَتْ فَنَحْتَاجُ إِلَى لَبَنِهَا قَالَ مُرْهَا فَلْتُحَلِّلْهَا يَطِيبُ اللَّبَنُ .

7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim and Jamil ibn Darraj and Sa‘d ibn abu Khalaf who has said the following: “About the case of a woman who has a servant who has committed fornication and we need her milk. He (the Imam) said, ‘Instruct her to give permission, the milk will be fine.’”

Ḥadīth 8

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ يُعْدِي وَ إِنَّ الْغُلَامَ يَنْزِعُ إِلَى اللَّبَنِ يَعْنِي إِلَى الظِّئْرِ فِي الرُّعُونَةِ وَ الْحُمْقِ .

8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu Najran from ‘Asem ibn Hamid from Muhammad ibn Qays who has said the following: “This is a narration of abu Ja‘far (a.s.), from the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause. He (the Messenger of Allah) has said, ‘You must not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding; the milk spreads and the boy is drawn to the milk, that is, to the frivolity and dimwittedness of the breastfeeding woman.’”

Ḥadīth 9

عَلِيٌّ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) يَقُولُ لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ يَغْلِبُ الطِّبَاعَ وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا الْحَمْقَاءَ فَإِنَّ الْوَلَدَ يَشِبُّ عَلَيْهِ .

9. Ali has narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin would say, ‘Do not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding: milk overpowers natural manners. The Messenger of Allah has said, “Do not hire a dimwitted woman for breastfeeding; with such milk the child grows up.’””

Ḥadīth 10

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ غِيَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) انْظُرُوا مَنْ تُرْضِعُ أَوْلَادَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْوَلَدَ يَشِبُّ عَلَيْهِ .

10. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin has said, ‘Pay proper attention to who breastfeeds your children: a child grows up with such milk.’”

Ḥadīth 11

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَمْرَكِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَخِيهِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ وَلَدَتْ مِنْ زِنًى هَلْ يَصْلُحُ أَنْ يُسْتَرْضَعَ بِلَبَنِهَا قَالَ لَا يَصْلُحُ وَ لَا لَبَنِ ابْنَتِهَا الَّتِي وُلِدَتْ مِنَ الزِّنَى .

11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-‘Amrakiy ibn Ali from Ali ibn Ja‘far from his brother, abu al-Hassan (a.s.), who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s.), about the case of a woman who has given birth because of fornication; if it is proper to hire her for breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not proper as well as the milk of her daughter who is born out of wedlock.’”

Ḥadīth 12

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْهَيْثَمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) اسْتَرْضِعْ لِوَلَدِكَ بِلَبَنِ الْحِسَانِ وَ إِيَّاكَ وَ الْقِبَاحَ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ قَدْ يُعْدِي .

12. Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from al-‘Abbās ibn Ma‘rūf, from Ḥammād ibn ‘Īsā, from al-Haytham, from Muḥammad ibn Marwān, who said that Abū Ja‘far (AS) said to me: 'Seek a wet nurse for your child from among the beautiful women, and avoid the ugly ones, for the milk can have an influence.'

Ḥadīth 13

أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْوُضَّاءِ مِنَ الظُّؤْرَةِ فَإِنَّ اللَّبَنَ يُعْدِي .

13. Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-‘Abbas ibn Ma’ruf from Safwan ibn Yahya from Rib‘iy from Fudayl from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘You must find a clean breastfeeding woman because milk may spread (its bad effects).”’

Ḥadīth 14

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ لَا تَسْتَرْضِعُوا لِلصَّبِيِّ الْمَجُوسِيَّةَ وَ اسْتَرْضِعْ لَهُ الْيَهُودِيَّةَ وَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةَ وَ لَا يَشْرَبْنَ الْخَمْرَ وَ يُمْنَعْنَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ .

14. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Sa‘id ibn Yasar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘Do not hire a Zoroastrian woman for breastfeeding your child, however, you may hire a Jewish, a Christian woman who must not drink wine and you must not allow them to do so.’”
