12. Foods Preferable for a Pregnant or a Woman during Childbirth to Eat

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ شُرَحْبِيلَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي الْمَرْأَةِ الْحَامِلِ تَأْكُلُ السَّفَرْجَلَ فَإِنَّ الْوَلَدَ يَكُونُ أَطْيَبَ رِيحاً وَ أَصْفَى لَوْناً .


1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Salmah ibn al-Khattab from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman from Sharahbil ibn Muslim who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A pregnant woman should eat quince because the child grows up of fine smell and clear color.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ التَّيْمُلِيِّ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْخَزَّازِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ نَظَرَ إِلَى غُلَامٍ جَمِيلٍ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ أَبُو هَذَا الْغُلَامِ آكِلَ السَّفَرْجَلِ .


2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan al-Taymuliy, from al-Husayn ibn Hashim from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, while looking at a beautiful boy said, ‘It seems the father of this boy had been eating quince.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) خَيْرُ تُمُورِكُمُ الْبَرْنِيُّ فَأَطْعِمُوهُ نِسَاءَكُمْ فِي نِفَاسِهِنَّ تَخْرُجْ أَوْلَادُكُمْ زَكِيّاً حَلِيماً .


3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Hassan from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The best of your dates are al-Barniy, feed them to your women during their childbirth; your children will grow up intelligent and forbearing.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عِدَّةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ عَمِّهِ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ سَالِمٍ رَفَعَهُ إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لِيَكُنْ أَوَّلُ مَا تَأْكُلُ النُّفَسَاءُ الرُّطَبَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ لِمَرْيَمَ وَ هُزِّي إِلَيْكِ بِجِذْعِ النَّخْلَةِ تُساقِطْ عَلَيْكِ رُطَباً جَنِيًّاقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَوَانُ الرُّطَبِ قَالَ سَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَسَبْعَ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنْ تَمْرِ أَمْصَارِكُمْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي وَ عَظَمَتِي وَ ارْتِفَاعِ مَكَانِي لَا تَأْكُلُ نُفَسَاءُ يَوْمَ تَلِدُ الرُّطَبَ فَيَكُونُ غُلَاماً إِلَّا كَانَ حَلِيماً وَ إِنْ كَانَتْ جَارِيَةً كَانَتْ حَلِيمَةً .


4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from A number of his people from Ali ibn Asbat from his uncle Ya‘qub ibn Salim in a marfu‘ manner from ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The first thing that women should eat is fresh dates; Allah, most High, said to Maryam, ‘. . . shake the twig of the palm tree; fresh dates will fall on you to be picked up.’ (19:24) It then was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what happens if it is not the season of fresh dates?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘If this is not available then it is seven pieces of dates of the dates of al-Madinah, and if that is not available then seven pieces of dates of the dates of other cities. Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, “I swear by My majesty, Glory, greatness and the height of My place that if a woman during her childbirth eats fresh dates, her child, a boy or girl, will grow up forbearing and tolerant.’””

عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الشَّامِيِّ عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ أَطْعِمُوا الْبَرْنِيَّ نِسَاءَكُمْ فِي نِفَاسِهِنَّ تَحْلُمْ أَوْلَادُكُمْ .


5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from abu Sa‘id (walking faster like running slowly)’d al-Shamiy from Salih ibn ‘Uqbah who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Feed your women with al-Barniy (dates) during their childbirth; your children will grow up forbearing.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَبِيصَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ النَّيْسَابُورِيِّ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ الشَّامِيِّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) أَطْعِمُوا حَبَالَاكُمُ اللُّبَانَ فَإِنَّ الصَّبِيَّ إِذَا غُذِّيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ بِاللُّبَانِ اشْتَدَّ قَلْبُهُ وَ زِيدَ فِي عَقْلِهِ فَإِنْ يَكُ ذَكَراً كَانَ شُجَاعاً وَ إِنْ وُلِدَتْ أُنْثَى عَظُمَتْ عَجِيزَتُهَا فَتَحْظَى بِذَلِكَ عِنْدَ زَوْجِهَا .


6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Muhammad ibn Qabisah from ‘Abd Allah al-Naysaburiy from Harun ibn Muslim from abu Musa from abu al-‘Ala’ al-Shamiy from Sufyan al-Thawriy from abu Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Feed your women, during their pregnancy, frankincense; if a child receives frankincense for nourishment in the mother’s womb it strengthens the heart of the child and increases the reasoning power of the child. If the child is a male he grows up brave and if the child is female her posterior will grow large which is favorable to her husband.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَطْعِمُوا حَبَالَاكُمْ ذَكَرَ اللُّبَانِ فَإِنْ يَكُ فِي بَطْنِهَا غُلَامٌ خَرَجَ ذَكِيَّ الْقَلْبِ عَالِماً شُجَاعاً وَ إِنْ تَكُ جَارِيَةٌ حَسُنَ خَلْقُهَا وَ خُلُقُهَا وَ عَظُمَتْ عَجِيزَتُهَا وَ حَظِيَتْ عِنْدَ زَوْجِهَا .


7. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Ali from Muhammad ibn Sinan who has said the following: “Al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has stated this Hadith. ‘You should feed male frankincense to your pregnant women; if the child in her womb is a male he will grow up of intelligent heart, learned and brave; and if the child is female she will grow up of good moral behavior (beautiful) and of large posterior which will be favorable to her husband.’”
