Limits of Breastfeeding to Take Effect
10 Aḥadīth

1- الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) يَقُولُ لا يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ إِلا مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَشَدَّ الْعَظْمَ.


1. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-ffassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), saying, ‘Breastfeeding does not bring unlawfulness unless it makes the flesh to grow and the bones to strengthen.’”

2- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّضَاعِ مَا أَدْنَى مَا يُحَرِّمُ مِنْهُ قَالَ مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ أَوِ الدَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَرَى وَاحِدَةً تُنْبِتُهُ فَقُلْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللهُ [اثْنَتَانِ] قَالَ لا فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَعُدُّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى بَلَغْتُ عَشْرَ رَضَعَاتٍ.


2. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn Ya’qub from Muhammad ibn Muslim from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about the case of breastfeeding and its minimum limit that brings unlawfulness. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is an amount of breastfeeding that makes the flesh or blood grow.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘Do you think once can do it?’ I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I ask you, can twice do it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it cannot do it.’ I kept counting up to ten times breastfeeding.”

3- وَعَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) عَنِ الرَّضَاعِ أَدْنَى مَا يُحَرِّمُ مِنْهُ قَالَ مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَالدَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَرَى وَاحِدَةً تُنْبِتُهُ فَقُلْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ أَصْلَحَكَ اللهُ اثْنَتَانِ فَقَالَ لا وَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَعُدُّ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عَشْرَ رَضَعَاتٍ.


3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about breastfeeding and its minimum limit that makes marriage unlawful. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is an amount that grows flesh and blood.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘Do you think once can do it?’ I replied, ‘I pray to Allah to keep you well, I ask you, can twice do it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘No, it cannot do so.’ I continued counting until ten times breastfeeding.’”

4- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ صَبَّاحِ بْنِ سَيَابَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) قَالَ لا بَأْسَ بِالرَّضْعَةِ وَالرَّضْعَتَيْنِ وَالثَّلاثِ.


4. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Safwan ibn Yahya from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab from Sabah ibn Sayabah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Breastfeeding once, twice or three times does not bring unlawfulness.’”

5- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) قَالَ لا يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ إِلا مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَالدَّمَ.


5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s) who said, ‘Breastfeeding does not bring unlawfulness unless it grows flesh and blood.’”

6- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ زِيَادٍ الْقَنْدِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (a.s) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ الرَّضْعَةُ وَالرَّضْعَتَانِ وَالثَّلاثَةُ فَقَالَ لا إِلا مَا اشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ الْعَظْمُ وَنَبَتَ اللَّحْمُ.


6. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Ziyad al-Qandiy from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I once asked abu al-Hassan (a.s), if breastfeeding once or twice brought unlawfulness or three times. He (the Imam) said, ‘No, until it strengthens bones and grows flesh.’”

7- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ (a.s) عَنِ الرَّضَاعِ مَا يُحَرِّمُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبِي (a.s) عَنْهُ فَقَالَ وَاحِدَةٌ لَيْسَ بِهَا بَأْسٌ وَثِنْتَانِ حَتَّى بَلَغَ خَمْسَ رَضَعَاتٍ قُلْتُ مُتَوَالِيَاتٍ أَوْ مَصَّةً بَعْدَ مَصَّةٍ فَقَالَ هَكَذَا قَالَ لَهُ وَسَأَلَهُ آخَرُ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهَى بِهِ إِلَى تِسْعٍ وَقَالَ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا أُسْأَلُ عَنِ الرَّضَاعِ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ قَوْلِكَ أَنْتَ فِي هَذَا عِنْدَكَ فِيهِ حَدٌّ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ هَذَا فَقَالَ قَدْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ بِالَّذِي أَجَابَ فِيهِ أَبِي قُلْتُ قَدْ عَلِمْتُ الَّذِي أَجَابَ أَبُوكَ فِيهِ وَلَكِنِّي قُلْتُ لَعَلَّهُ يَكُونُ فِيهِ حَدٌّ لَمْ يُخْبِرْ بِهِ فَتُخْبِرَنِي بِهِ أَنْتَ فَقَالَ هَكَذَا قَالَ أَبِي قُلْتُ فَأَرْضَعَتْ أُمِّي جَارِيَةً بِلَبَنِي فَقَالَ هِيَ أُخْتُكَ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ قُلْتُ فَتَحِلُّ لأخٍ لِي مِنْ أُمِّي لَمْ تُرْضِعْهَا أُمِّي بِلَبَنِهِ قَالَ فَالْفَحْلُ وَاحِدٌ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ هُوَ أَخِي لأبِي وَأُمِّي قَالَ اللَّبَنُ لِلْفَحْلِ صَارَ أَبُوكَ أَبَاهَا وَأُمُّكَ أُمَّهَا.


7. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn ‘Isma’il has narrated from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan from all from Safwan ibn Yahya who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu al-Hassan (a.s), about breastfeeding and who becomes unlawful for marriage thereby. He (the Imam) said, ‘A man once asked my father (a.s), about it and he said that once has no affect, and twice until he counted up to ten times breastfeeding.’ I then asked, ‘Are they one after the other or suckle after suckle?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘That is how he said to him and another man asked him (the Imam) about it and he (the Imam) counted up to nine times and said, “A great many times I am asked about breastfeeding.’” I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, tell me about your own words on this issue. What is the maximum limit according to you?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I just told you what my father had answered.’ I then said, ‘I took notice of what your father has said but I thought perhaps there is a limit for it which he did not inform, thus you inform me about it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is how my father has said.’ I then asked, ‘My mother breastfed a girl with my milk.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘She is your sister because of breastfeeding.’ I then asked, ‘Is she lawful for marriage for my brother from whose milk she was not breastfed?’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘Is the father (whose going to bed has its effect on the milk) one?’ I replied, ‘Yes, he is my brother from my father and mother.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Milk is because of the effect of father’s going to bed. Your father becomes her father and your mother becomes her mother.’”

8- الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) عَنِ الْغُلامِ يَرْضَعُ الرَّضْعَةَ وَالرَّضْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ لا يُحَرِّمُ فَعَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَكْمَلْتُ عَشْرَ رَضَعَاتٍ فَقَالَ إِذَا كَانَتْ مُتَفَرِّقَةً [فَلا].


8. Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla’ ibn Muhammad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Faddal from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), about the case of a boy who is breastfed once and twice. He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not cause unlawfulness.’ I counted up to ten times breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘If they are on different times they do not cause unlawfulness.’”

9- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) إِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ كَبِيرٍ فَرُبَّمَا كَانَ الْفَرَحُ وَالْحَزَنُ الَّذِي يَجْتَمِعُ فِيهِ الرِّجَالُ وَالنِّسَاءُ فَرُبَّمَا اسْتَحْيَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ أَنْ تَكْشِفَ رَأْسَهَا عِنْدَ الرَّجُلِ الَّذِي بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَهُ الرَّضَاعُ وَرُبَّمَا اسْتَخَفَّ الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى ذَلِكَ فَمَا الَّذِي يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ فَقَالَ مَا أَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَالدَّمَ فَقُلْتُ وَمَا الَّذِي يُنْبِتُ اللَّحْمَ وَالدَّمَ فَقَالَ كَانَ يُقَالُ عَشْرُ رَضَعَاتٍ قُلْتُ فَهَلْ يُحَرِّمُ عَشْرُ رَضَعَاتٍ فَقَالَ دَعْ ذَا وَقَالَ مَا يَحْرُمُ مِنَ النَّسَبِ فَهُوَ مَا يَحْرُمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ.


9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahab from ‘Ubayd ibn Zurarah who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), ‘I belong to a large family. On different occasions of happiness and sorrow during which men and women come together women feel shy removing their head scarf before men between whom there is breastfeeding relationship or men fear looking to that, so who becomes unlawful because of breastfeeding. He (the Imam) said, ‘It is what grows flesh and blood.’ I then asked, ‘What grows flesh and blood?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It has been said that it is ten times breastfeeding.’ I then asked, ‘Does ten times bring unlawfulness?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Leave that alone.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Whoever is unlawful for marriage because of being a relative becomes unlawful because of breastfeeding.’”

10- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْعَدَةَ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (a.s) قَالَ لا يُحَرِّمُ مِنَ الرَّضَاعِ إِلا مَا شَدَّ الْعَظْمَ وَأَنْبَتَ اللَّحْمَ وَأَمَّا الرَّضْعَةُ وَالرَّضْعَتَانِ وَالثَّلاثُ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ عَشْراً إِذَا كُنَّ مُتَفَرِّقَاتٍ فَلا بَأْسَ.


10. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from Mas’adah ibn Sadaqah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s), has said, ‘Breastfeeding does not bring unlawfulness unless it strengthens the bones and grows flesh, and one or two or three times breastfeeding even up to ten times on different times does not bring the unlawfulness affect.’”
