Al-Kāfi - Volume 5 > The Right of Wife on Husband
Hadith #1

1- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مَا حَقُّ الْمَرْأَةِ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا الَّذِي إِذَا فَعَلَهُ كَانَ مُحْسِناً قَالَ يُشْبِعُهَا وَيَكْسُوهَا وَإِنْ جَهِلَتْ غَفَرَ لَهَا وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) كَانَتِ امْرَأَةٌ عِنْدَ أَبِي (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) تُؤْذِيهِ فَيَغْفِرُ لَهَا.

1. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the right of woman on her husband for which when he yields is a man of good deeds. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must provide her sufficient food, clothes and forgive her if she acted ignorantly.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘My father had a woman who would disappoint him (the Imam) but he would forgive her.’”



Hadith #2

2- عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ الْعَزْرَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَسَأَلَتْهُ عَنْ حَقِّ الزَّوْجِ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ فَخَبَّرَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَتْ فَمَا حَقُّهَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ يَكْسُوهَا مِنَ الْعُرْيِ وَيُطْعِمُهَا مِنَ الْجُوعِ وَإِنْ أَذْنَبَتْ غَفَرَ لَهَا فَقَالَتْ فَلَيْسَ لَهَا عَلَيْهِ شَيْ‏ءٌ غَيْرُ هَذَا قَالَ لا قَالَتْ لا وَاللهِ لا تَزَوَّجْتُ أَبَداً ثُمَّ وَلَّتْ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) ارْجِعِي فَرَجَعَتْ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ وَأَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْنَ خَيْرٌ لَهُنَّ.

2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from al-Jamuraniy from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn abu Hamzah from “Amr ibn Jubayr al-‘Arzamiy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that once a woman came to the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, and asked about the rights of a husband on a woman. He (the Messenger of Allah) informed her and then she asked about her right on him and he (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘He must provide her sufficient clothes, sufficient food to protect her against hunger and if she committed a sin forgive her.’ She then asked if she had other rights besides these on her husband.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) replied, ‘No, there is nothing else.’ She then said, ‘No, by Allah I will never marry.’ She then left and the Holy Prophet, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, said, ‘Come back.’ She went back and he (the Messenger of Allah) said that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, ‘If they maintain chastity it will be better for them.’ (24:60)”



Hadith #3

3- عَنْهُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ اتَّقُوا اللهَ فِي الضَّعِيفَيْنِ يَعْنِي بِذَلِكَ الْيَتِيمَ وَالنِّسَاءَ وَإِنَّمَا هُنَّ عَوْرَةٌ.

3. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah ibn Mehran who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘You must maintain piety before Allah about two weak ones’- he thereby meant the orphans and women and that ‘they (women) must be treated with great privacy.’”



Hadith #4

4- عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ ذُبْيَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ عَنْ بُهْلُولِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ زَوَّجَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) جَارِيَةً كَانَتْ لإسْمَاعِيلَ ابْنِهِ فَقَالَ أَحْسِنْ إِلَيْهَا فَقُلْتُ وَمَا الإحْسَانُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَ أَشْبِعْ بَطْنَهَا وَاكْسُ جُثَّتَهَا وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبِي وَسَّطَكِ اللهُ مَا لَهُ.

4. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn Ali from Dhubyan ibn Hakim from Buhlul ibn Muslim from Yunus ibn ‘Ammar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, gave in marriage to me a slave-girl who belonged to ‘Isma’il, his son and said, ‘Be good to her.’ I then asked, ‘What is the meaning of ‘be good to her’?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Provide her with sufficient food, clothes and forgive her sins against you.’ He (the Imam) then said to her, ‘You must go (with him), may Allah keep you on the middle path in what is for him.’”



Hadith #5

5- عَنْهُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ شِهَابِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) مَا حَقُّ الْمَرْأَةِ عَلَى زَوْجِهَا قَالَ يَسُدُّ جَوْعَتَهَا وَيَسْتُرُ عَوْرَتَهَا وَلا يُقَبِّحُ لَهَا وَجْهاً فَإِذَا فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ وَاللهِ أَدَّى حَقَّهَا قُلْتُ فَالدُّهْنُ قَالَ غِبّاً يَوْمٌ وَيَوْمٌ لا قُلْتُ فَاللَّحْمُ قَالَ فِي كُلِّ ثَلاثَةٍ فَيَكُونُ فِي الشَّهْرِ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ لا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ فَالصِّبْغُ قَالَ وَالصِّبْغُ فِي كُلِّ سِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ وَيَكْسُوهَا فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ أَرْبَعَةَ أَثْوَابٍ ثَوْبَيْنِ لِلشِّتَاءِ وَثَوْبَيْنِ لِلصَّيْفِ وَلا يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُفْقِرَ بَيْتَهُ مِنْ ثَلاثَةِ أَشْيَاءَ دُهْنِ الرَّأْسِ وَالْخَلِّ وَالزَّيْتِ وَيَقُوتُهُنَّ بِالْمُدِّ فَإِنِّي أَقُوتُ بِهِ نَفْسِي وَعِيَالِي وَلْيُقَدِّرْ لِكُلِّ إِنْسَانٍ مِنْهُمْ قُوتَهُ فَإِنْ شَاءَ أَكَلَهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ وَهَبَهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَصَدَّقَ بِهِ وَلا تَكُونُ فَاكِهَةٌ عَامَّةٌ إِلا أَطْعَمَ عِيَالَهُ مِنْهَا وَلا يَدَعْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لِلْعِيدِ عِنْدَهُمْ فَضْلٌ فِي الطَّعَامِ أَنْ يُسَنِّيَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئاً لا يُسَنِّي لَهُمْ فِي سَائِرِ الأيَّامِ.

5. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from those whom he has mentioned from Shihab ibn ‘Abd Rabbihi who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the rights of women on their husbands. He (the Imam) said, ‘He must provide for her sufficient food, sufficient clothes to maintain her dignity and must not make a repugnant face on her; and when he has followed these instructions he then by Allah has fulfilled her rights.’ I then asked about oil. He (the Imam) said, ‘That is every other day.’ I then asked about meat. He (the Imam) said, ‘That is once every three days which is ten times every month and not more.’ I then asked about dyes. He (the Imam) said, ‘Dye is once every six months and four sets (kinds) of clothes every year, two sets (kinds) for winter and two for summer and it is not proper to leave her home to suffer from the poverty of three things: oil for the head, vinegar and ghee and one mud (a certain measurement) of food for each meal, because that is how much I use for myself and my family and for every human being one time meal must be measured which he may consume or gift it or give as charity and one must feed his family of the seasons’ fruits. On ‘Id days one must provide additional food which is not consumed on other days.’”



Hadith #6

6- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ الْعَلاءِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) أَوْصَانِي جَبْرَئِيلُ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) بِالْمَرْأَةِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ لا يَنْبَغِي طَلاقُهَا إِلا مِنْ فَاحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ.

6. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘Jibril advised me about women (so much) that I began to think of divorce as an improper act unless it is because of openly proven indecency.’”



Hadith #7

7- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ غَالِبِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ رَوْحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَوْلُهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمَنْ قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ فَلْيُنْفِقْ مِمَّا آتاهُ اللهُ قَالَ إِذَا أَنْفَقَ عَلَيْهَا مَا يُقِيمُ ظَهْرَهَا مَعَ كِسْوَةٍ وَإِلا فُرِّقَ بَيْنَهُمَا.

7. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar or others from ibn Faddal from Ghalib ibn ‘Uthman from Rawh ibn ‘Abd al-Rahim who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the words of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, ‘. . . one who suffers from constraint in his sustenance must spend from whatever Allah has granted him.’ (65:7) He (the Imam) said, ‘He must provide her with basic necessities and clothes, otherwise, judgment for separation between them must be issued.’”



Hadith #8

8- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ قَالَ لا يُجْبَرُ الرَّجُلُ إِلا عَلَى نَفَقَةِ الأبَوَيْنِ وَالْوَلَدِ قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ قُلْتُ لِجَمِيلٍ وَالْمَرْأَةُ قَالَ قَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا كَسَاهَا مَا يُوَارِي عَوْرَتَهَا وَيُطْعِمُهَا مَا يُقِيمُ صُلْبَهَا أَقَامَتْ مَعَهُ وَإِلا طَلَّقَهَا.

8. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘ Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following: “He (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘A man is not compelled, but for providing the expenses of his parents and children.’ He (the narrator) has said that ibn abu ‘Umayr has said, ‘I asked Jamil about the woman and he said that ‘Anbasah has narrated from abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said that if one provides clothes for her which is sufficient to maintain her dignity, sufficient food to survive, she then must stay with him, otherwise, she is divorced.’”
