The Shaykh (Al-Mufid), may Allah (swt) have mercy on him, said: “The rest of the grains from what the earth grows, which enter the qafiz (dry-measure used for grain) and the measure (mikyal), are given zakat at the rate of the tithe and half the tithe, like wheat and barley, as an emphasized Sunnah,” until the end of the chapter. We have already clarified at the beginning of this book that the obligatory zakat is not due except in nine things, and that zakat is not due on anything that the earth grows except the four categories: dates, raisins, wheat, and barley. As for what is other than them, it is only given zakat by way of recommendation and desirability. What has been reported concerning the zakat of all grains other than these four categories is to be understood according to what we have mentioned, namely recommendation and desirability. Among that is what he narrated (in the following hadith):

Hadith 1

Muhammad ibn Yaqub, from Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Hammad ibn Isa, from Hariz, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: I (narrator) asked Imam (a.s), peace be upon him, about ‘cultivation, what of it is given zakat.’ Imam (a.s) said: “Wheat, barley, corn (al-dhurrah), millet (al-dukhn), rice, sult (hulless barley), lentils, and sesame; all of this is given zakat, and what resembles it.”

Hadith 2

Hariz, from Zurarah, from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him: the like of it. And Imam (a.s) said: “Everything that is measured by the sa’ and reaches the awsaq in which zakat becomes obligatory, then zakat is due upon it.” And Imam (a.s) said: “The Messenger of Allah (swt), may Allah (swt) bless him and his family, placed charity in everything that the earth produces, except vegetables, herbs, and everything that spoils within its day.”

Hadith 3

Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal, from Ibrahim ibn Hashim, from Hammad, from Hariz, from Zurarah, who said: I (narrator) said to Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him: “Is there anything due on millet (al-dhurrah)?” Imam (a.s) said: “Millet (al-dhurrah), lentils, barley-like grain (al-sult), and grains, in them is the like of what is in wheat and barley. And everything that is measured by the sa’ and reaches the awsaq in which zakat becomes obligatory, then zakat is due upon it.”

Hadith 4

And from him, from Ibrahim, from Hammad, from Hariz, from Abu Basir, who said: I (narrator) said to Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him: “Is there anything due on rice?” Imam (a.s) said: “Yes.” Then Imam (a.s) said: “Indeed, Madinah at that time was not a land of rice, so that it would be mentioned regarding it. But it has indeed been placed in it, and how could there not be anything due on it, when most of the land tax (kharaj) of Iraq is from it?”
